2009 Preakness Odds: Contender Terrain Has Long Odds at 25/1

If Terrain could find the stride that helped him at the start of his 2008 season, he could be one of the long shot sleepers to win the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes.

When you look at a three-race stretch run in 2008 from August 3 to September 13, you could see why some bettors would want to pull the trigger on Terrain at the Preakness.

The 3-year old Gelding won the Maiden Claiming at Churchill Downs on July 3, then backed up that victory with wins at the Mountaineer Juvenile S. on August 2 and at the Arlington-Washington Futurity on September 13. He also finished second at the Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity at Keenland on October 4.

Despite that outstanding run, Terrain has struggled since that second place finish at Lane’s End. He finished fourth at the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on October 25 and fifth at the Boyd Gaming’s Delta Jackpot S. on December 5 of 2008, and then third at the Louisiana Derby on March 14 and fourth at the Toyota Blue Grass S. on April 11 of this year. So while he hasn’t been blown out in any of his last four races, Terrain isn’t exactly heading into the Preakness Stakes on a hot streak like other thoroughbreds set to run on May 16.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sports Interaction have made Terrain a 25/1 long shot to win the 2009 Preakness Stakes. Rachel Alexandra is a 3/2 favorite, while 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird has 7/2 odds and Kentucky Derby runner up Pioneerof The Nile has 6/1 odds to win.
