2009 Preakness Odds: Contender Flying Private at Long Odds to Win at 20/1

Thanks to a lousy 19th place showing at the 135th Kentucky Derby, Flying Private has been made a 20/1 long shot to win the 2009 Preakness Stakes according to oddsmakers.

Even with his disappointing finish at the Kentucky Derby, there is still a lot of optimism surrounding Flying Private entering the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes, mainly because of his decent effort so far in 2009.

Flying Private kicked off his 2009 season with a fourth place finish at Allowance/Optional Claiming in Oaklawn Park on January 17. Two weeks later, he finished second at the same event and fourth on February 14, once again in the Allowance/Optional Claiming in Oaklawn Park.

On February 28 of this year, Flying Private placed second at the Mountain Valley S. and then backed up that effort with a second finish at the Lane’s End at Turfway Park on March 21. But his last two races he struggled, finishing fifth at the Arkansas Derby on April 11 and then 19th at the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 2.

If he can find the stride that guided him to consecutive second place showings at the Moutain Valley S. and at Lane’s End, Flying Private, who oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.COM have made a 20/1 long shot, could be one of the sleepers in the 2009 Preakness Stakes. He’ll face stiff competition, however, mainly from Rachel Alexandra (3/2), 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird (7/2) and Kentucky Derby runner up Pioneerof The Nile (6/1).
