Jeff Siegel's Day Makers - 6/18/20

June 18, 2020

Jeff Siegel’s Day Makers for Thursday, June 18, 2020

Jeff Siegel’s Day Makers – his prime plays from around the country - are offered on a daily basis to members of xpressbet.com and 1stbet.com. The day’s the cream of the crop, Day Makers emphasize price and wagering value and should be given strong consideration both as straight wagers and as keys in vertical and horizontal exotics.

Churchill Downs – 6th race. Post time: 3:42 ET
7-Acre (6-1)

This sophomore son of Blame may be worth a bit of gamble in his first try around two turn and his first on grass. Out of mare by Galileo, the W. Mott-trained colt certainly is bred to run long on the sod, and after chasing home the extremely talented Art Collector in a fast main track dash last month he’ll certainly enjoy this softer assignment. Competitive on speed figures with the possibility of producing a significant forward move under these conditions, the lightly-raced colt is facing a make-or-break situation today so let’s see what he can do at or around his morning line of 6-1.

Belmont Park – 8th race. Post time: 5:04 ET
1 – Morning Colors (9/2)

Displayed plenty of talent and potential in her maiden win at Tampa Bay Downs in early March while giving the impression that she has the ability to develop into a very useful grass filly for trainer C. Clement, who excels with this type of runner. In that race she was very keen early and unsettled during the early stages, relaxed midway, hit the front with authority entering the lane and then when challenged in the final sixteenth found something extra to win with something left. From her rail post today, the daughter of Midshipman should draft into an excellent ground-saving position under J. Rosario and perhaps even establish the pace if it’s handed to her. This New York-bred first-level allowance event seems well within her capabilities, so let’s put her on top and hope to close to her morning line of 9/2.

Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

Belmont Park - Race #1
Picks Notes
#3 Love on the Run Mott firster goes for a typically patient debut barn (10%), but also one that can pop at any time, and this miss cost 425k, has a big pedigree, a slew of works, and possibly as important as anything, meets a crew that is certainly there for the taking; look out.
#6 So Darn Hot The gal to beat was a decent enough 3rd on debut on the dirt and a better 3rd on the turf last time, so clearly she has talent, yet neither of those runs was breaking any stop watches, and her lack of speed is a real worry too, at underlaid odds as well; second-best.
#1 Sneer Tricky read didn't run an inch in the slop at 9-5 last time, so if you want to say it was the track, then she's a likely winner off the close 2nd two-back, but yikes, she was beaten a furlong, so simply drawing a line through the race seems a bit dicey; mixed signals.
Race Summary Tab the tote on the 3, as you want to see her live and taking money, especially against group like this, as it would be a good sign, and you can play her in all the slots if that's the case, and especially to kick off the early Pk5 as well, since she won't have to be a monster to have a big say against these gals.

Belmont Park - Race #4
Picks Notes
#8 Mills Cagey veteran has found his form again at 10 and now goes off the Barker claim, which is a strong 27% angle from a 15-horse sample, and he also catches a field with very little speed, which means he's going to trip out from a beautiful attack post; love his chances here.
#1 Chief Know It All The chalk has won five straight and absolutely crushed in his last two, but note those were with some potent barns and now he goes off the claim for Miranda, who is 0-for-19 on the year, not to mention this is his first start since being nabbed in January; tread very lightly here.
#3 Scarf It Down Logical contender has run well without winning in three starts off the Noda claim and fits nicely with this group on paper, though his deep-closing style in a race without a ton of pace won't help his chances in the lane, at underlaid prices as well; likely to run out of room late.
Race Summary There's a lot to like from the 8, especially in a race without a lot of speed and a barn switch to a very sharp trainer, as well as a potentially vulnerable favorite, so play him aggressively to win and place, while getting some added value by keying him in the early Pk5/Pk4, since he looks like he's getting all the best of it here, and what could be a square price too.

Belmont Park - Race #8
Picks Notes
#1 Morning Colors Clement runner was all-out to win on debut at Tampa with a moderate figure, and rising to take on winners is never easy, but there's no one here to fear, and this miss looks like the type that has a lot more in the tank than she's yet to show; look out.
#9 Astoria Kitten The chalk will be bet hard for Gargan off the decent 6th in a open GP stakes last time, and on paper she's the one to beat, and has some speed too, but she's also been stuck in neutral in her last three, while the pick has tons of upside; scary, but no lock.
#12 Summer At the Spa Intriguing miss was a private purchase after the Aqu debut win for Toner and is now with Thomas, who adds Lasix, takes the blinkers off, and reaches for Jose Ortiz, so while this draw is no bargain, there seems to be some intent here; tabbing today.
Race Summary That 9-2 ML seems well worth the risk-reward on the 1, as she's drawn well and should only improve off her unveiling, so play her in all the slots, and especially the late Pk5/Pk4 as well, since this is the type of field that is vulnerable to a breakthrough runner, and she certainly checks a lot of boxes suggesting she's the one who's going to do it.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Woodbine - Race #3
Picks Notes
#7 Mata Harry Has run mostly evenly in a couple of starts so far, but this is a softer group than he has seen to date. Should be right there at a fair price.
#5 Jack Beanstalk Drops for this synthetic debut, and there are some recent Gulfstream races that would be very tough here if he's able to transfer that form to the new footing.
#4 Gideon's Sword Has had 13 chances, so he's not a serious player on top for me, but he has some pace to stay involved throughout and might land an underneath piece.
Race Summary Mata Harry can be tough here at something hopefully around 3/1, as he's getting in easier today and isn't far off what it'd take to win here.

Woodbine - Race #5
Picks Notes
#2 Hope Garden Taking a swing with a type I don't normally like -- an 11-start maiden -- but there isn't a ton of pace signed on here and this filly will be a big number. She ran okay without blinkers in the past and should get a forward trip.
#9 Munnings Beach Looks like one of the ones to beat in this soft spot, but she has a very even running style that might help her once again find a horse or two too good today.
#7 Merino Wool Blinkers go on today while dropping in class in a fairly significant way, and she should be in the mix from the start with a good spying trip.
Race Summary Hope Garden is a swing in a spot without much to worry about. She will be a price and should get a forward trip on a modest pace. Thinking she can stick around at a number.

Woodbine - Race #7
Picks Notes
#1 Westlodge Intrigue The form didn't hold up at all at Oaklawn, so the move back to Woodbine might allow her to wake up in a hurry. 5/1 ML offering seems fair for a top barn.
#6 Mizzona Should be a handful with these, as she's got tactical pace and a reliable finishing effort. She'll likely be a short price, though, and she does tend to settle for some close calls underneath.
#3 Hassah Beat Mizzona back in October, and though she doesn't always show up, her top stuff is enough to put a scare into these at a fair price.
Race Summary Westlodge Intrigue needs a complete form reversal, but that might come on the move back to the Tapeta after a string of lackluster tries at Oaklawn.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Scioto Downs - Race #1
Picks Notes
#2 CAMBASSADOR Can make maximum use of his speed as he nears 50-win club.
#1 REACH FOR INFINITY Back with own kind, second as odds-on choice two starts back.
#4 HEADFORTHEBEACH Claimed by 22-percent barn, knows how to win.
Race Summary Cambassador broke through with his first win as a 13-year-old and 48th overall with a front-end victory that he could duplicate. He moves outside in and could be in control throughout. Play a 2 with 1,4 with ALL trifecta.

Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #8
Picks Notes
#7 YEN Qualifier signal readiness after solid 2-year-old campaign.
#3 COMBS HANOVER Out-kicked by 2-1 winner in fast heat after two of remaining faves broke stride.
#1 RIDE TO JUSTICE Hit board twice in fall sire stakes, qualifying run disrupted by equipment break.
Race Summary Yen had two wins and a near miss to cap a 3-for-7 freshman season and won easily in his return qualifier. He has speed and is a good price play, so box a 1-3-7 exacta.

Vernon Downs - Race #11
Picks Notes
#3 WINNING PRINCESS Mare was slowed by pace, took overland route as beaten fave.
#5 BARN HOLDEN Sustained second-over rally to win going away in return.
#1 KOLIN Disappointed on clear lead in latest but can’t be discounted.
Race Summary Winning Princess rallied into a slow pace while widest and just missed in weaker field. She can handle the boys and the class jump at a better price, so play 3-1 and 3-5 exactas.

Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Indiana Grand - Race #3
Picks Notes
#2 One for Richie Was up in time vs N3L foes at Oaklawn and anything close to that gets it done for him here; can adjust to any pace and has been in a lot of races that look better than this one.
#5 Better Charge It Took on strong company in three at Oaklawn and drops down to his lowest level since a maiden-claiming win last summer at Ellis; will throw a :21 and change at them and just might keep going.
#3 Westwood Proud Faltered in his 1st of the year last out and likely will show much more run in his return; was an easy winner in fast time in his only Indiana Grand start last year.
Race Summary One for Richie has the advantage of being in good form, has an adjustable running style and has the connections to be successful here.

Indiana Grand - Race #5
Picks Notes
#11 Imperial Mission Ran a decent 4th at Houston in his only start of this season and has run some good races at Indiana Grand; has the speed to get in good position from his outside post.
#10 Charlie'sarchangel When he wins, he wins for fun and has taken 4 of his last 10; doesn't disappoint often and has the speed to be a factor from the outset.
#5 Peekacho Was effective at similar levels last year and bit more more than he could chew at Turfway; can get a good stalking position.
Race Summary Imperial Mission has the tactical speed to track just off the leaders and a repeat of his best efforts can make him a strong player at a good price.

Indiana Grand - Race #8
Picks Notes
#1 Devil's Cross Was a winner and also had a 2nd over this strip last year and can get a good stalking trip in his return; has trained well and has the talent to continue his success vs. state-breds.
#3 Chipofftheoldblock Was an easy maiden winner here last year and took on some solid allowance company at Churchill; capable of a good effort in his 1st of the year.
#6 Seminole Justice Has the speed to get to the lead here and once that happens he's usually tough to the end; capable of staying for a major piece of it.
Race Summary Devil's Cross has the tactical speed to get away in good order and likely will benefit from following a quick pace; a steady rally can get it done for him.
