Al Cimaglia: May 22-Scioto Downs Pick 5 Analysis

May 22, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia

It is good to back and safe to say we can all use a bit of entertainment and a diversion during this difficult time. Good wishes go out to anyone who has been affected by Covid-19. Not to be overlooked are all the hardworking horsemen. They have been working to ensure the good health and fitness for horses in their barn without a chance to race for purse money.

My focus will be on the $10,000 guaranteed Pick 5 with a 14% takeout which begins in Race 5. Because horses are coming off extended layoffs and until there is some form taking shape, proceeding with caution is the best choice.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 5

2-Westsluckycam (9/2)-Blankenship barn has a 21% win rate over the past 365 days and this mare has enough gate speed to get a good seat. Miller's choice over #7 will need a strong try but likes to compete.
5-Letme Fly Low (4-1)-Raced the last half in 56.1 in her qualifier and went past a few down the lane. Should fit with this crew and can make some noise.
6-Tiffany Rocks As (6-1)- Burke trainee just went around without a move from the 8-hole in qualifier. Has raced well here in the past winning 5 of 20 starts. May blast out and look to make every call a winning one.

Race 6

3-Rosemary Rose (2-1)-Went the back half in 55.3 and rallied for a win off cover. Page picks this mare over #5 and Rosemary likes the track. Has hit the board in 15 of 25 races at ScD with 7-pictures and looks like a major threat.
6-Golden Paradise (5/2)-6-year-old is no slouch drawing off by six to win her qualifier and has won 3 of 8 at Scioto. Raced the 2nd half in 56.2 all on her own and regular pilot Tetrick takes a seat. He may look to get the jump on #3.

Race 7

3-Satisfashion (8-1)-Just fell short in qualifier but fractions were quick. Looking for a square price and could get sucked around and surprise at nice odds.
4-Princess Rougarou (5-1)-Faded down the lane in tune-up but did stop the clock in 153.3 and should fit well versus this bunch. Hensley barn wins their share, best to respect chances.
8-Libby's Idea (4-1)-Burke pupil toyed with the field in her qualifier winning by almost 10-lengths. Should be bet hard but did not face anyone from this field last week.

Race 8

4-Workinitonbroadway (2-1)-Another from the Burke barn that smoked everyone in last week's qualifier. Will likely be a single on many tickets and could go off as an odds-on chalk.
8-Milford's Z Tam (20-1)-Swan For All seven-year old should offer a big price and has hit the board in 19 of 44 starts here. Could rally off cover and pick-up seventh win at ScD if pace is hot. But if not, could spice up the gimmicks.

Race 9

5-Signal Hill (8/5)-Not in love with the short price and this barn does not post many winners but still figures to be a major player. Has the gate speed to get on the engine and Merriman could steal a quarter.
9-Just A Passenger (7-1)-Burke trainee was a winner in 4 of 9 this year which is a vast improvement over 2019. Page will probably need to leave but has the speed to get a close-up trip and look to roll by down the lane.

0.50 Pick 5

2,5,6/3,6/3,4,8/4,8/5,9
Total Bet=$36

Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

Gulfstream Park - Race #1
Picks Notes
#3 Gloriously MSW dropper takes the big plunge, gets back to the turf as well, and her lone grass run two-back was a sharp 3rd sprinting, which says she's a loose here; come and catch the pick.
#7 Wicked Memory Underlaid ML favorite didn't fire last time, though it was a fast race for the level and she had a lot of trouble, but she'll be way overbet with Irad jumping aboard; trying to beat on top.
#1 Unforseen Closer took the drop last time and was 4th, but didn't break through, so while this post is good and she'll be running on late, she's tough to like for all the marbles; underneath, if at all.
Race Summary The 3 really should be favored on the drop and return to turf, not to mention because of her speed too, so if she's 3-1 or better you can play her aggressively to win and place, though you'll get some added value by keying her to kick off the early Pk5, as she meets a crew there for the taking, and looks primed for a breakthrough run.

Gulfstream Park - Race #5
Picks Notes
#8 Sundown Kid ML longshot didn't fire on turf when last seen in Oct. but the two prior main track runs were solid, this outside attack post is perfect, and those AM drills say he's primed; comes back running.
#5 Ten Miles High Tampa invader has plenty of upside off just two starts, improved mightily in his last, and has the tactical speed to be close throughout, and this is a confident ship by O'Connell; huge chance.
#9 Dr. Samadi Abreu firster goes for a stiff 29% debut barn, so take notice of the tote action, and there's plenty of AM activity here too, plus this outside draw will keep him out of trouble; figures very live.
Race Summary That 12-1 ML on the pick seems like another swing and miss in these parts, but even half that would be fair on a runner who has two of the best dirt races showing, and the risk-reward would be there at about 6-1, so play him in all the slots, and especially to end the early Pk5/Pk4 too, since that incorrect 12-1 might scare a lot of people off in both sequences, which means a win would really blow both of them up.

Gulfstream Park - Race #6
Picks Notes
#10 Cool Hand Coop Price player really woke up last time, when a closing 3rd with a very big figure (for these), and while it came from nowhere and he may regress mightily here, he should still be in the 8-1 range (forget that 15-1 ML), and with a ton of speed signed on, it will only flatter his late run; upset special.
#12 Bee Major Router has been stalking of late and now cuts back, which will give him plenty of foundation in the lane, and he should be sitting off the speed and waiting to fire, and those two-turn tries weren't bad at all, and new conditioner Einhorn has done good things with limited starters; do not ignore.
#6 Jaxon's Gold Santa Anita invader was facing better out West, and new trainer Hess has been firing at the meet after a rough Championship Meet, so you have to respect this one, and being the fresh new face is never a bad thing, but dueling early and holding late will not be easy; comes unglued in the lane.
Race Summary We kick off the late Pk5 with a real doozy, so looking for value seems imperative, and while the 10 might be 6-1 before he's the 15-1 ML, he'll still offer a price, and while a bounce may well happen, even slight regression puts him in the mix here, so give him a look in all the slots, and especially to start the sequence, since a win would knock a lot of tickets out right off the bat.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Golden Gate - Race #5
Picks Notes
#5 Respect My Candor Finisher usually runs out of time, but there are enough forward players in here to ensure a fair pace, and the price should be right with a potentially vulnerable chalk likely to take a ton of cash.
#3 Point Hope Probably makes short work of these, but even in this climate I don't love the drop off the claim after a couple months, and he has run some pretty bad races at pretty short prices in the past.
#7 Jupiter S. Likely to be overmatched here, but the move to the turf at least offers some room for improvement with sire Country Day on top.
Race Summary Respect My Candor is somewhat playable at something like the 6/1 ML offering, as she has run well enough in the past at this trip when facing better.

Golden Gate - Race #7
Picks Notes
#6 Bornonvalentineday Gets some class relief after going a bit flat in the final yards of recent races with better, and her overall form seems superior to this bunch.
#2 Callmejessiejames Has some tactical pace to put to use in this spot, but she hasn't been in very many fast turf races in her career, so I'm a bit wary of how she stacks up here.
#7 Missionelle Moves into the new barn off the claim, and this one should get a nice, tactical run. Her 0-for-4 career turf slate is an issue, but she can land a piece if she can hold her good form for the new barn.
Race Summary Bornonvalentineday probably won't offer much of a price, but she figures to be a handful with this kind. She raced for more than twice this tag last time out when beaten a couple lengths, and she'll get another really good trip right near the top.

Golden Gate - Race #9
Picks Notes
#5 May Song Speedy type doesn't meet a field absolutely overloaded with other pace, and she's bred to handle the new footing. Plenty appealing at something like the 8/1 ML offering.
#1 Apples Arch Races here off a September layoff while bringing fairly spotty form. Not sure what the price will be in her local debut, but I wouldn't want too short a number to sign on today.
#7 Sweet and Softly Speed has come up short at 7/5 and 4/5 in those first two career starts, but the price probably gets at least a bit better this time around, and the move to turf offers some hope.
Race Summary May Song might appreciate the surface switch, and he appears to only have one other serious pace threat to deal with.

Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Scioto Downs - Race #1
Picks Notes
#5 LADY DUDETTE Good value play off the claim in deep field at this level.
#3 FOOLISH HEART Has speed, overcame post 9 to go 4-for-5 this year.
#1 PART-TIME HANOVER Rallied for her 17th win, just missed in follow-up.
Race Summary Lady Dudette chased the favorite through a fast third-quarter split and faded at the Meadows. She enters a barn that is better than recent percentages indicate and is worth a price stab in the first harness race since the coronavirus outbreak. Play a 5-ALL exacta.

Scioto Downs - Race #3
Picks Notes
#5 ROSIES APPLES Steady form at the Meadows, enters high-percentage barn.
#2 VIRGINNAIRE Posted solid numbers with pair of thirds at Miami Valley.
#1 PARKLANE GLAMOROUS Went wire-to-wire in qualifier, yet to win this year.
Race Summary Rosies Apples won twice, rallied around stalled cover to finish second, then didn’t factor from post 8 in her last four starts out of town. She returns for top connections, so play 5-1 and 5-2 exactas.

Scioto Downs - Race #6
Picks Notes
#3 ROSEMARY ROSE Classy 6yo had good tune-up, can stalk and pounce in bid for 31st victory.
#4 ST LADS GIDGET Led at every call in back-to-back wins in open company at Northfield.
#6 GOLDEN PARADISE Unwound too late while 6-wide in lane as the odds-on favorite.
Race Summary No room for error as today’s co-feature draws six pacers with a combined 151 wins. Rosemary Rose, a $558k earner for powerful Burke barn, projects ideal stalking trip off a winning qualifier.

Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Remington Park - Race #3
Picks Notes
#1 Cjs Rockhard N Ready Finished mid-pack last out when he had an outside post; a similar effort will produce better results as he breaks from the rail.
#3 Trubador Dan Never got involved when he broke from the outside last time; hasn't had a lot of luck at the draw this season but breaks from the No. 3 post tonight and should have a better go of it.
#2 Hollyhook Ran evenly in his 1st of the Remington season and can be very dangerous with a clean trip.
Race Summary Cjs Rockhard N Ready takes a class drop and won the last time he was at this level; fits well and can finish strongly vs. this group.

Remington Park - Race #6
Picks Notes
#1 Brewhouse Ran on well vs. straight maidens last out and can succeed on this class drop.
#9 Seissita Was 3rd vs. maiden specials and will be around for the finish; due for a big effort.
#8 One Fine Eagle V Ran an even 4th in both tries this year and can improve in this spot.
Race Summary Brewhouse has taken on some good horses and drops to his lowest level.

Remington Park - Race #7
Picks Notes
#4 Mighty Tamale Has spent his career in good company and takes a class drop; will have to get tied on early going 250 but has the class to do well here.
#3 Polar Xpress Lost by a head to the speedy starter allowance regular SM Lexis Chick two back
#1 Some Value Was a good 2nd at this distance last time and steps up in class; has some good races on his form.
Race Summary Mighty Tamale has spent his career against much tougher, especially this season; drops in price and can wake up vs. this level of competition.

Handicapped by The Walker Group at Los Alamitos (Quarter Horse)
PURCHASE
Always check program numbers.
Odds shown are morning line odds.

Race 5 - Maiden - 300y on the Dirt. Purse: $9000 Class Rating: 77

QUARTER HORSE 300Y, FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 4 APOLLITICAL PATTY 8/5

# 2 FLIGHT QUEEN 5/1

# 8 ONE SWEET VENOM 12/1

I think APOLLITICAL PATTY is a decent choice. Maybe a little very risky in this baby race, but there are competitive historic results for players on this bloodline. This filly could improve on Lasix. Has to be considered as Arrossa has been among the strongest trainers with two-year olds. FLIGHT QUEEN - Foose is a strong sire when it comes to two-year olds. This filly could improve on Lasix. Should be given a chance as Willoughby has been among the most favorable trainers with two-year olds.

Santa Anita - Race #6 - Post: 3:09pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 90

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#7 RMANIE'S GREY SUIT (ML=20/1)
#9 SHORT OF EZ (ML=5/2)
#5 ROYAL SEEKER (ML=50/1)

RMANIE'S GREY SUIT - The 89 recent race speed fig looks good in black and white. Should do well in this field. Weight shift of -5 from December 7th race at Los Alamitos (Thoroughbre. Three consecutive improved speed ratings (63-85-89) make this animal a powerful contender. SHORT OF EZ - Lots of positive 'vibrations' connected with this thoroughbred and his connections. ROYAL SEEKER - My handicapping know-how tells me to be on the alert for this horse in this event

Vulnerable Contenders: #10 PAPA TURF (ML=2/1), #6 FAST COTTON (ML=3/1), #3 JEN GO UNCHAINED (ML=5/1),

PAPA TURF - Hard to put any cash on this gelding on the front end. Likes to end up on the board though. FAST COTTON - Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some success lately in short distance races in order to back him. JEN GO UNCHAINED - Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some recent good showings in short distance races in order to play him. Not probable that the speed figure he recorded on April 26th will be enough in this event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Play #7 RMANIE'S GREY SUIT to win if you can get odds of 3/1 or more

Lone Star Park - Race #8 - Post: 6:37pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 84

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#12 ROCKTIZWAY (ML=15/1)
#11 BANO SOLO (ML=3/1)

ROCKTIZWAY - The last time he tried this distance he got a fig good enough to win this race. BANO SOLO - When Asmussen gives Elliott a leg up on any horse, you sense that with their winning percent you have more than a fighting chance. I have to believe Asmussen is making a good move here. This colt can only be aided by the shorter distance. This horse's last race was at Oaklawn Park in a race with a class figure of 96. Dropping drastically in class rating in today's event puts him in a solid position right here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 GETALOADOFTHIS (ML=5/2), #7 D'ROCKETMAN (ML=4/1), #1 COOL QUARTET (ML=6/1),

GETALOADOFTHIS - The Brain always warns me to keep away from ponies in sprint contests that haven't finished in the money in short distance contests of late. This horse hasn't shown very much in the last couple of affairs. D'ROCKETMAN - You can't keep making allowances for a thoroughbred that just doesn't win. Don't play him. Hard to put any money on this gelding on the win end. Likes to finish in the money though. COOL QUARTET - Should have at least hit the board in the last two months in a short distance race to be worth the chance at small odds in a sprint.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - ROCKTIZWAY - Deceptive early and closing speed on this one. Padronbarcenas should have him ready as they turn for home to make a winning move.

#12 ROCKTIZWAY to win at post-time odds of 3/2 or better

Race 8 - Claiming - 7.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 63

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE APRIL 22 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $8,000

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 1 ADONAI BLESS 9/2

# 3 RACHIELY'S DREAM 4/1

# 11 HER NAME IS STAR 7/2

My pick here is ADONAI BLESS. Has been moving admirably and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. Recently Santos has been on fire which may give the edge to this filly. The average class figure of 57 makes this horse hard to beat. RACHIELY'S DREAM - Is a solid contender based on figures earned lately under today's conditions. HER NAME IS STAR - Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this group of animals in her last race.
