April 10, 2020
By Mike Dempsey
Thursday’s opener at Gulfstream Park was a curious race, a wide open $12,500 maiden claimer where I landed on Traffic Trouble, the 3-1 third choice.
What got my attention was my second choice Sweet Giant, who was 12-1 on the morning line was loading in the gate at 68-1. The colt was 0 for 2 on turf I but thought was worth one more look on the surface. Nobody else did apparently.
The colt got a perfect ride from apprentice Jose Trejos, working his way through traffic and to the lead in the stretch and he looked like a winner. Having used him in my Pick 5, my heart started beating a little harder than normal.
Well, it was not to be as my third choice Magical Mike ran him down, paying $6.10 as the second choice. A few of my Pick 5 tickets were still alive and a $2 exacta box of my top three picks in the race produced a $253.20 payoff. My top three produced a $1 trifecta that paid $524.80 if you played it. I did not play the trifecta as I spent most of my bankroll on the Pick 5.
I rarely play longshots to place, but if you did you were rewarded with a $40.60 payoff for a $2 wager.
I ended up getting knocked out of the Pick 5 in the third leg anyway, which took some of the sting away from getting run down in the opener.
A solid 10 race card today at Gulfstream Park and then was have a marathon 13-race card on Saturday. And there is racing at the track on Easter Sunday.
It is keeping me busy working 10 hours days, but I sure don’t have anything better to do.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:
Gulfstream Park Odds and Picks: Opening Race of Today, April 10
GP Race 1 Md $20,000 (1:00 ET)
#8 Power 10-1
#6 Traceability 6-1
#2 Winning Factor 7-2
#1 Joe Benjamin 4-1
Analysis: Power gets the slight nod in a wide open start to the day. The McPeek trainee was dismissed at 45-1 in his debut against maiden special with company where the colt was bumped coming out of the gate then had to steady and after going wide around the first turn was eased after six furlongs. The winner and fifth place finisher came out of that race to win next out. The colt drops into an easier spot here tagged for $20,000. The colt has a solid turf pedigree, by Midshipman out of a Dynaformer mare that has dropped three other foals to race including one turf winner. He has two breezes since his last outing and is going to be a decent price in this easier spot.
Traceability was fifth in his debut and moved forward in his second career outing rallying to finish in the runner up spot against $30,000 foes. He is in good hand with the Mott barn and another move forward puts this guy in the mix in this spot. He is the first foal to race out of a Ten Centuries mare.
Gulfstream Park Odds and Picks: Featured Race of Today, April 10
GP Race 8 OClm $75,000N1X (4:41 ET)
#8 Four Graces 3-1
#5 Finding Fame 4-1
#1 Super Cute 8-1
#4 Four Grands 7-2
Analysis: Four Graces dueled for the early lead and drew clear under a mild drive to break her maiden in her debut here going seven furlongs at 7-1. The Wilkes barn seldom wins first time out and this gal did it like she is going to be a good one. She is out of a stakes placed Seeking the Gold mare that has dropped four other foals to race, all winners including stakes winner McCraken ($869,728). The extra ground will suit this filly with the main knock being the trainer’s son-in-law Landeros getting the call and there is not a chillier jockey to be fond, currently 1 for 107 on the year.
Finding Fame stalked the early pace, made a good move while wide to open up heading for home and held on to break his maiden by 3/4 of a length in a sharp effort. This gal was a 4425,000 Keeneland purchase and a half to stakes winner Mei Ling ($522,383) and Medaglia Gold ($147,631). She should only get better with more ground and is in good hands with the Shug barn that is 26% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from sprint to route.
Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Friday's Best Bet: So Alive well-meant at Oaklawn Park
By Jarrod Horak
April 10, 2020
Friday’s 7th race from Oaklawn Park is a $30,000 claiming event for 3-year-olds and up which have never won three races. They will be traveling one mile on the main track (Post Time - 5:06 p.m. ET).
#2 SO ALIVE (3-1) hooked Pirate’s Punch and By My Standards in his last two optional claiming starts at Fair Grounds. He showed ability when he raced for Todd Pletcher, and this looks like a great spot to get back on the beam in his third start for Brad Cox.
#7 Tez (8-1) drops back in for a tag and I like his tactical speed. He is not out of this for Tom Amoss.
#11 Lighthawk (7-2) hit the board as the chalk in both local routes for $40k. Robertino Diodoro paid $30k for this one last fall, and David Cohen rode him to a place finish Feb. 27.
#1 Dunph (5-1) moves to the Joe Sharp barn via claim. He removes blinkers and stretches out and could end up sitting a nice ground saving stalking trip.
