Wednesday, April 8: Happy Valley (Hong Kong) Picks

April 6, 2020

From Hong Kong Jockey Club Racing Correspondent Decland Schuster

HAPPY VALLEY SELECTIONS
Wednesday, April 8, 2020
First Post: 7:00AM ET

Race 1: #8 Dionysus Collin, #9 Everyone’s Elite, #2 Play Wise, #10 Galaxy Emperor
Race 2: #2 Let’s Take It Easy, #1 Happy Warrior, #8 Focus, #5 Fun Times
Race 3: #1 Harmony N Home, #5 Winner’s Heart, #10 Super Alliances, #3 Golden Glory
Race 4: #10 Simply Fluke, #3 Amazing, #2 Gunnar, #8 Wood On Fire
Race 5: #10 Diamond Brilliant, #3 Beauty Amigo, #6 Seventh Sea, #12 Good For You
Race 6: #4 Be Ready, #2 Explosive Witness, #8 Amazing Kiwi, #7 Very Sweet Orange
Race 7: #1 Holy Heart, #3 Smoothies, #7 Flash Famous, #4 Bear Again
Race 8: #10 This Is Class, #6 Hong Kong Win, #4 Gentle Breeze, #2 Stronger

Race 1: Yue Wan Handicap

#8 Dionysus Collin is unlucky not to already be a winner and although is isn’t the easiest of contests, he does rate as a leading player, especially with four runner-up efforts next to his name. If he can overcome the wide draw then he can finally go on with it. #9 Everyone’s Elite is another who is unlucky not to have already won. He’s finished second in his last five races and he’s proven that it’s only a matter of time before he does deliver. This appears to be a race in two and in his favour is the soft gate and retention of Joao Moreira. #2 Play Wise mixes his form but is a two-time Class 4 winner. He’ll relish the return this grade and he deserves respect. #10 Galaxy Emperor hasn’t done much across his short six-start career, though, the added distance just might be what he is after.

Race 2: Yiu Tung Handicap

#2 Let’s Take It Easy is a three-time course and distance winner. This is right up is alley and the retention of Zac Purton has to warrant respect, especially with the blinkers applied here as he looks to three narrow defeats behind him. #1 Happy Warrior is as consistent as they come. He’s been close up all season and if he runs up to his usual level, then he’s expected to be in the finish. #8 Focus is a much better Happy Valley horse and the return to his preferred track on Wednesday should spark sharp improvement. #5 Fun Times mixes his form but his best should see him finish thereabouts.

Race 3: Wan Tsui Handicap (1st Section)

#1 Harmony N Home is lightly raced but he has shown his quality already across his short three-start career. Class 3 beckons for this galloper and with Zac Purton taking the reins again, he shapes as the one to beat. #5 Winner’s Heart is nearing a breakthrough win and he finds himself stepping back up to 1200m here. He can figure with the right run. #10 Super Alliances has mixed his form but has twice placed over this course and distance this season. He’s drawn to get the gun run and he’s another who has shown that it’s only a matter of time before he does go on with it. #3 Golden Glory won well two starts ago and since then has been far from disgraced. He won’t be too far away but there doesn’t appear to be much improvement left in him which is a slight concern.

Race 4: Wan Tsui Handicap (2nd Section)

#10 Simply Fluke makes his first start for the Douglas Whyte stable after transferring from the Dennis Yip yard. He’s placed in his last two starts and this contest looks more than suitable for him to finally breakthrough in as long as he can offset the wide gate. #3 Amazing won well two starts ago. He’s still racing well since that win and with even luck he’s capable of returning to the winner’s stall. #2 Gunnar is consistent and in his favour this time is Alfred Chan’s seven pound claim. He can run them along here and he’s capable of clinging on for prize money. #8 Wood On Fire has a bit of class about him and the inside gate should afford him every opportunity.

Race 5: Hong Tung Handicap

#10 Diamond Brilliant has finished runner-up in his last two outings. He’s racing well at present and his consistent record should see him prove difficult to reel in. He commands plenty of respect, especially from the in-form Benno Yung yard who bagged race-to-race double last Sunday. #3 Beauty Amigo is winless. He closed nicely last start for fourth at Sha Tin and he might just be down to a competitive mark now. #6 Seventh Sea is another who is winless. He has put together a few nice runs albeit without winning and this contest is suitable. #12 Good For You is already a two-time course and distance winner this term. He commands respect returning to the Valley after two runs at Sha Tin.

Race 6: Hing Wah Handicap

#4 Be Ready has gone close on a number of occasions already across his short six-start career. He’s shown plenty of ability early and the drop back to 1000m here on the tight turning city circuit appears a positive for his chances. #2 Explosive Witness arrived in Hong Kong as an undefeated victor at Moonee Valley in Australia. He’s drawn awkwardly in gate 12 but he does appear to still have a number of ratings points still in hand. #8 Amazing Kiwi finished runner-up last start. He’s an ex-Godolphin galloper who was a two-time winner in Australia. #7 Very Sweet Orange has hit a purple patch of form. He’s looking for his fourth consecutive win and he’s going to look the winner a long way from home if he tries to make all once again.

Race 7: Oi Tung Handicap

#1 Holy Heart brought with him some high quality British form with him and although he’s yet to record a win, he has shown that it’s only a matter of time before he does so. He narrowly missed by a short-head last start and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him go on with things here. #3 Smoothies made all for an impressive win last start. He’s likely to try the same again here and if he can dictate terms to suit himself, he’s going to warrant plenty of respect. #7 Flash Famous has put his best foot forward his last two starts and his now a four-time winner this season. He’s enjoyed a rapid rise to success and as he is in career-best form, he is expected to challenge this bunch. #4 Bear Again won easily three starts ago by four lengths over this course and distance. He’s next best.

Race 8: Hing Min Handicap

#10 This Is Class is looking for his third consecutive win. He’s living up to his namesake with four wins already across 10 starts and with even luck he’s going to take a power of beating. #6 Hong Kong Win is a three-time winner already this term. He’s a pretty straightforward ride who with a positive run on the speed, always seems to run a bold race. This is suitable and the booking of Joao Moreira commands respect. #4 Gentle Breeze holds an imposing record at the Valley. He might have reached his mark but still, his best is more than up to this and gate one will see him do next to no work throughout. #2 Stronger sped to a track record two starts ago at the Valley. That alone suggests that he is going to be in the finish even if he went unplaced last time as his blistering best is worth consideration.

$81K Pick 5 Carryover Awaits Wednesday at Tampa

April 8, 2020 | By Jeremy Plonk

The Tampa Bay Downs race week kicks off Wednesday with an 8-race card that features an $81,240 carryover in the late pick five. The sequence begins in Race 4, and honestly does not have any free spaces with standout favorites. With a significant amount of ‘dead money’ in the pot, this is a good time for horseplayers to take a chance when the takeout percentages are more neutralized.

Race 4 (2:00 pm ET): CLM at 1-1/16 miles (turf)
A major key to this race is if #13 STRONG GEM (4-1) draws into the field off the also-eligible list. He could be a potential single under red-hot riding Samy Camacho on the class drop. Because of that, we’ll devise two approaches to this pick five: singling #13 STRONG GEM, as well as a spread approach in this race in his absence. In turf claimers at Tampa in 2020, the Betmix stats show horses exiting top-3 finishes win 16% compared to just 8% for those off the board last out. That said, I’ll include #1 BEACHTREASUREGIRL (8-1) and #2 INCA PRINCESS (15-1) along with favorites #3 BIZNESS BEAUTY (3-1), #4 SHENU SHENUME (7-2) and #5 NOBLE INTENTIONS (9-2). I prefer that STRONG GEM draws into the field.

Race 5 (2:30 pm ET): MCL at 7 furlongs
Favorites have won 42% of maiden claiming 7-furlong sprints at Tampa this year, so this one could play close to the vest. It’s a tough distance for a low-level horse and current fitness has been a must. All 19 winners this year have raced within 5 weeks. Seriously work to include an alternative to those attempting this spot off a layoff. #6 GONEASAGIRLCANGET (2-1) will try to buck that trend and looks solid on paper. Don’t get beat by her; but don’t single. #4 LANGUE LIEE (9-2) is the more alluring option as trainer Monica McGoey’s barn is a sharp 7: 3-2-1 at Tampa since the start of March. I’ll go two-deep.

Race 6 (3:00 pm ET): CLM at 1 mile (turf)
Similar to Race 4, the fact that turf claimers exiting top-3 finishes have twice the strike rate as those trying to rebound off poor efforts can help whittle this tough field. Only 4 runners in this lineup have that quality, and 3 of them exit the same race March 21. I watched the replay several times and #6 ITSAGIMME’S GIRL (9-2) was the winner that day and galloped out best despite the diminishing late win margin. Samy Camacho is riding at 28% since the start of March. Expect this mare to hold off her rematch challengers again. It’s the newcomers that strike fear on the class drop. #4 BARREL OF DESTINY (7-2) will be running late, while #5 MONKEY MIND (3-1) should be up near the front challenging #6 ITSAGIMMEE’S GIRL. My preference would be to use all 3, but if we don’t get the AE to draw in Race 4 and the ticket starts to balloon in cost, then the bold single of #6 ITSAGIMME’S GIRL is the way to go.

Race 7 (3:30 pm ET): CLM at 6 furlongs
This handicapping challenge rates difficult because several class droppers are just hitting the bottom level in hopes they can right their ship. #9 AMELIA’S WILD RIDE (5-2) used to be one of the best turf sprinters in the country. High-percentage trainer Jane Cibelli is able to lure top rider Antonio Gallardo during a fire sale, so it’s mixed signals. Don’t get beat by this one; but don’t trust him either. #7 BIG GILLETTE (4-1) drops in class and shortens the trip, having raced only a few times in 3 years. But he, too, lures the hottest jockey in the colony, Samy Camacho, so there’s reason to think he still plays at this level. The price seems short on #6 THE GREAT LOUDINI (5-1), but at least he looks like a $5,000 horse in reasonable form and gets a potentially quick pace to close into. I’d want closer to 10-1 to make a win bet, but definitely would include him in the pick five.

Race 8 (4:00 pm ET): MSW at 1 mile (turf)
Betmix data tells me trainer Christophe Clement has won 6 of his last 9 starts at Tampa Bay Downs, including 4 with first-time starters, which is unbelievable. #9 GAELIC GOLD (3-1) has to be considered on connections and pedigree. #3 CLEAR AS DAY (7-2) has been wildly inconsistent, but her bullet workout April 2 indicates she may trend toward one of her good efforts vs. her bad. Trainer Mike Stidham is 4-12 in Tampa turf MSW races in 2020. #2 HEAVENLY PEACE (4-1) should improve in her second start for an Eddie Kenneally barn solid in this position and whose Tampa shippers have been on point in limited 2020 strikes. Larger budgets certainly could consider #7 WINDFALL PROFIT (6-1), who adds Lasix in her seasonal return for Shug McGaughey. Adding WINDFALL PROFIT would cost an additional $9 in our Plan A ticket and $15 in our Plan B.

Suggested Tickets:

Plan A: 13 with 4,6 with 6,4,5 with 9,7,6 with 9,3,2 = $27

Plan B: 1,2,3,4,5 with 4,6 with 6 with 9,7,6 with 9,3,2 = $45

Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #4
Picks Notes
#5 Noble Intentions Lightly raced runner exits a pair of fast races for the level, ran relatively well in both, and sure doesn't meet much in this spot; look out.
#9 Finest Jewel Tactical miss adds blinkers after a decent 6th while trying winners, and if she can improve off that run, she's a big threat here; using.
#4 Shenu Shenume Tricky read didn't run an inch for 25k last time but her prior two win this easily, though that last leaves a bad taste; tread lightly here.
Race Summary We kick off the big 81k carryover late Pk5 with a tough one, but you get upside with the 5 (and the 9), and the form of this group isn't as good as the two races she comes out of either, so give her a look in all the slots, and especially to kick off the sequence, since there will be a lot of spreads here, which means getting home a winner in the $10 range will knock out a lot of tickets right off the bat.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #5
Picks Notes
#6 Goneasagirlcanget The clear filly to beat has run well in two starts off the Morrow claim, and either of those runs would handle this extremely weak crew quite comfortably; imposing favortie.
#2 She's a Fair Catch DeD invader has been middling against La breds but note new trainer Westlye is 18% with newcomers, and this gal will get some speed to run into; could spice up your EX.
#4 Langue Liee Tactical miss was just a close 2nd but no catches a group with more than a few who want to be close early, which won't help her chances late; using underneath, if at all.
Race Summary Clearly you won't get rich on the 6, and that 2-1 ML will likely be 4-5 by post time, but if she does somehow sit in the 8-5 range you can make an aggressive win bet, but her real value comes in the big 81k carryover late Pk5 (and to kick off the late Pk4 as well), since you can single her here, which will allow for more coverage in the deeper surrounding legs, as this looks like a name the score type of spot for her.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #8
Picks Notes
#2 Heavenly Peace Homebred had a hint of trouble on debut at GP when a decent enough 6th in a promising effort, and this is a sizable class drop, plus she drew well, and has a ton of upside too; look out.
#9 Gaelic Gold Dangerous firster goes for a white hot Clement, who is a stiff 29% with debut runners, though this wide draw won't help, and half-bro Sea Foam (452k) is a dirt runner; still, very scary.
#7 Windfall Profit Tricky read hasn't been out since Oct. for Shug, when she a bad 6th on the dirt at Lrl, but she returns with Lasix, and was facing much better in her two decent NYRA turf runs; may wake up.
Race Summary We end the 81k carryover late Pk5 (and late Pk4) with a toughie, but the 2 has and experience edge, plenty of upside and drew much better than the potentially hotshot Clement firster, which might be enough to get it done here, so play her in all the slots, and especially to end both sequences, though you better use 'Gold as well, since she could be a runner, and this is not the type of spot to skimp with potentially so much on the line.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #7
Picks Notes
#4 Big Em C Has never been much in the off going, so he deserves a pass for that last one, and his back form on the fast main track is good enough to handle these are a potentially overlaid number.
#6 Ed's Rocket Dangerous pace looks like the one to beat, but there are a couple other forward players who might complicate the trip. Likely underlay?
#1 Union Rebel He honestly may not be fast enough to win this, but he might work out a decent trip from off the pace with this inside draw. Underneath player.
Race Summary Big Em C can bounce back off the fading run last out over the sloppy going, and he seems likely to offer a much more attractive number than he did last out at 6/5.

Will Rogers Downs - Race #9
Picks Notes
#1 Direct Dial Might trip out from the fence with four or five serious speed players drawn outside of him. His ability to flash tactical pace while settling a bit should serve him well to spy the pace and finish.
#8 Bay Muzik Has done his best work on synthetics and grass, but he's very fast and draws outside all of the other pace. Despite his class edge, I wouldn't want him at anything shorter than the 5/2 ML offering given the race shape -- and even that might be a bit of a reach for me.
#3 Dame Plata He certainly doesn't have as high a ceiling as several others in here, but his late-running style should serve him well in a sprint spot that should have a wild pace.
Race Summary Direct Dial will need to stay in touch early, but he has enough tactical pace to work out a trip with these. The splits figure to be very, very fast, so his ability to sit a bit and finish makes him the right one.

Will Rogers Downs - Race #10
Picks Notes
#10 Free Dream Finisher might like getting down to this level after trying much better in his last two trips to post. He graduated with maiden claimers at this price, and he should get a bit overlooked on the tote. I wouldn't be against taking an aggressive stand with this guy in a wide-open race.
#3 Wil of Fortune Forward player will likely have a bit of company near the top, and though he ran a good one at this level last time out, it's worth noting he still lost at 1/5.
#4 Eurobadguy Dropper has never been in for a tag before, and though his last couple of races aren't much to look at, this level gives him a reasonable chance to wake up.
Race Summary Free Dream might need a race, but the price figures to be right on the drop out of races with much better. His late-running style might play well in the finale.

Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Fonner Park - Race #1
Picks Notes
#4 Ye Be Judged Comes from the hot Black stable and jockey Olesiak has won 7 of 25 over the past week; capable of leading at every pole.
#1 Creeds Revenge Clobbered maidens last out and steps up to N2L company; was 2nd in a state-bred stakes race last year.
#5 Name the Price Finished 2nd as odds-on choice last out and comes back at the same level capable of a strong effort.
Race Summary Ye Be Judged won going a half-mile last time and stretches out to six furlongs; one to catch.

Fonner Park - Race #6
Picks Notes
#1 Retaliated Broke his maiden here last year and was competitive vs. winners at Prairie Meadows; works indicate he's ready for his return.
#3 Bell Ringer Put it all together for a 10-length score at Houston three races back; likely to try for the front early in this one.
#4 Djinn of Djibouti In from Fair Grounds, where he was claimed by Gonzalez in his latest; likely to have a big presence in his 1st local start.
Race Summary Retaliated has the speed to get to the front but has races well without the lead on a couple occasions; chance to score in his 1st since August.

Fonner Park - Race #7
Picks Notes
#6 Lost Key Was 5th in a stakes race last out and had been competitive in better spots; his sire and grandsire were Remington Park/Oklahoma Derby winners and this one should be able to get the distance.
#8 Frigid Came on well and won going away going six furlongs and looks ready to try the mile; was 3rd at Oaklawn earlier and usually that would be good enough here.
#1 Witt Seven Has faced much better than this most of the time and could grind it out at a mile.
Race Summary Lost Key tried stakes company last out, gets more distance and can be a big player from start to finish.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 9 FINEST JEWEL 6/1

# 3 BIZNESS BEAUTY 3/1

# 4 SHENU SHENUME 7/2

FINEST JEWEL looks to be a quite good contender. Blinkers on may be the difference maker here. This filly has a good win percentage in turf route races. Earned a very good Equibase Speed Figure last time out. BIZNESS BEAUTY - Bowersock has this filly running well and is a formidable selection based on the solid speed figures garnered in route races recently. SHENU SHENUME - Hernandez and Oconnell are a strong pair for profits. Has performed well recently in route races, posting a nifty 69 avg Equibase Speed Figure.

Race 8 - Claiming - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $9350 Class Rating: 75

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $7,500.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 5 SILVER LUKE SILVER 5/2

# 4 JOHN ALLEN 12/1

# 1 FRED'S COUNTRY BOY 8/1

SILVER LUKE SILVER appears to be the bet in here. Vaunts reliable speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. Is a key contender - given the 95 speed rating from his most recent race. Must be given a shot as he drops to compete against this less demanding field. JOHN ALLEN - Will probably be one of the leaders of the group going into the midpoint of the race. FRED'S COUNTRY BOY - The average class figure alone makes this entrant a key contender. He has been running quite well recently while recording very strong Equibase Speed Figures.

Will Rogers Downs - Race #8 - Post: 4:45pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $9,350 Class Rating: 75

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#5 SILVER LUKE SILVER (ML=5/2)
#1 FRED'S COUNTRY BOY (ML=8/1)
#2 CHRONIQUEUR (ML=7/2)

SILVER LUKE SILVER - Looking over this horse's PPs I see that the last time he tried this trip he got a fig that would be good enough to win today's race. Trainer Davidson moves this thoroughbred to a lower class rank to face weaker company. Look for a solid race given this drop. I like that recent effort on Mar 30th at Will Rogers Downs where he ran second. I like this horse. Has the highest earnings per start in here. FRED'S COUNTRY BOY - The last time I saw this horse was at Turfway Park in a race with an Equibase class figure of 80. Dropping considerably in class rating today puts him in a solid position in this race. CHRONIQUEUR - Broberg brings him back again. I recommend you stay with this hot colt. Last race at Sam Houston, he broke from the far outside. I don't need an advanced degree like The Brain to tell me his inside post position today should help.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 MY MACHO MON (ML=4/1), #6 GIANT'S FORREST (ML=8/1),

MY MACHO MON - Can't really be sure that the most recent speed rating of 74 is true since it was garnered on a muddy track. Ran a great fig last time around the track, but the attempt will probably take too much out of him. GIANT'S FORREST - Hard to play a questionable contender that can't even score one time in his last ten races. This gelding is always hitting the board, but just doesn't finish on top. Hard to bet on him on the top end.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - SILVER LUKE SILVER - Betting the animal with the best last race speed figure is a good angle. None higher than this horse's last one.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #5 SILVER LUKE SILVER on the win end if we get at least 5/2 odds

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#5 NAME THE PRICE (ML=7/2)
#6 ALEX TO (ML=5/1)

NAME THE PRICE - The March 1st contest at Fonner Park was at a class level of (75). Dropping to a lower class rank a significant amount, so he should be in a good spot. This animal is tops in earnings per start. He looks strong in today's event. ALEX TO - It looks like the pace horses may duel each other into the ground. When the real running starts this gelding should be finishing well. Last race was at Fonner Park in a race with a class number of 66. Dropping a significant amount in class figure this time around puts him in a solid position right here. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a comeback.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 YE BE JUDGED (ML=5/2), #1 CREEDS REVENGE (ML=3/1), #2 STEF'S GUY (ML=4/1),

YE BE JUDGED - This favorite ran on Mar 6th and hasn't had a drill since. Tough to back a three-year old meeting the older ones for the first time. Probably needs more seasoning. CREEDS REVENGE - Not likely that the rating he registered on March 25th will be enough in this event. STEF'S GUY - The speed rating last race out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's event. Mark this mount as a vulnerable contender.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
#5 NAME THE PRICE is going to be the play if we are getting 6/5 or better
