UEFA Champions League Round of 16 - First Legs

Wednesday, Feb. 20
Games scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET

Atletico Madrid vs. Juventus

Fans of tetchy, cagey, tactical affairs will be salivating at the prospect of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side take on Juventus. These are two teams who are incredibly unlucky not to have won a Champions League in recent years, and the competition is of desperate importance to both sides.

Juventus have more or less sewn up Serie A. Atletico are out of the Copa del Rey and appear too far behind Barcelona in La Liga.

This is a game where defences should come out on top, and under 2.5 goals is predictably short at 8/15, but there could be value in backing Juventus to claim a precious victory at 15/8.

Juventus are at full strength with Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci returning from recent injuries, and with the talismanic Cristiano Ronaldo up front, they have the star quality required to edge a tight game. Ronaldo has bagged 22 goals in 31 games against Atletico.

Even though Atletico have kept 10 clean sheets in their last 14 at home, Juventus look slight value.

Tip: Juventus at 15/8
Prediction: Juventus 1 Atletico Madrid 0

Schalke 04 vs. Manchester City

Manchester City are the favourites to win the Premier League, the League Cup, the FA Cup and the Champions League, and they can take a big step towards winning the last of those by making short work of Schalke 04. They are 2/7 to win away in Gelsenkirchen, with the Germans as big as 20/1 to qualify from the tie.

City have won 12 of their last 13 matches in all competitions and seven of those victories came by more than three goals. If City score early, things could get ugly for Schalke, who have problems defensively.

Schalke are enduring a torrid season and are 14th in the Bundesliga. They scraped through by far the easiest group in this year’s competition and only managed three wins in six games against Porto, Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow.

This should be very easy for City.

Tip: Manchester City -1.5 at 8/11
Prediction: Manchester City 3 Schalke 04 0
