UEFA Champions League Round of 16 - First Legs

Tuesday, Feb. 19
Games scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET

Liverpool vs. Bayern Munich

Liverpool are narrow outsiders to qualify against Bayern Munich, but they look good value both to go through and to win the first leg at Anfield at a price of 23/20.

Although their league form has faltered slightly, Jürgen Klopp’s side remain in slight control of the Premier League title race, and their run to last year’s Champions League final proves that they are a big force in Europe as well. They have not lost in 19 consecutive home European matches, and the home advantage of Anfield could prove the difference on Tuesday night.

Liverpool got the better of PSG and Napoli at home in the group stages, and it could be crucial that they have had a weekend off as their rivals competed in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

One big problem is the absence of Virgil van Dijk, which is compounded by the fact that Dejan Lovren is also unlikely to feature. Bayern have been better in recent years, but their attack can still hurt Liverpool.

However, in a match that is likely to be open, 23/20 about the home side looks good value.

Tip: Liverpool at 23/20
Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Bayern Munich

Lyon vs. Barcelona

It is a long time since Lyon dominated Ligue 1 with an astonishing haul of consecutive title wins, but their performances in this year’s group stage show that they will be no easy task for Barcelona in the last 16.

Bruno Genesio's side became the first side in France to beat PSG this season, winning 2-1 against the champions earlier this month, and they collected four points from their group-stage contests against Manchester City. They were very unlucky not to beat the English champions at home in a 2-2 draw and caused Pep Guardiola’s men more problems than the vast majority of Premier League teams.

There is one huge problem for Lyon here. Their talisman, Nabil Fekir, is suspended, which makes the 18/5 about the home side seem less tempting, although Memphis Depay is able to produce moments of magic.

Barcelona have been involved in some frenetic Champions League ties over recent years, but it may be worth backing a low-scoring game at relatively long odds here. Barca have won only seven of their last 19 away matches in the Champions League, and they would probably take a draw here. This game may be less open than expected.

Tip: Lyon 1-1 Barcelona
Prediction: Under 2.5 at 6/4

The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 continues this Tuesday, February 19, 2019, and there is a huge derby as Liverpool welcomes Bayern Munich in the first leg at Anfield. Both teams are trying to become the European champions for the sixth time in history, so we expect to see an epic matchup. Liverpool is a slight -125 favorite to qualify for the next round, while the odds on Bayern Munich are set at -105.

Liverpool vs. Bayern Munich

Three-way: 1: Liverpool +105; X: +280 Draw; 2: Bayern Munich +250

Spread -0.5: Liverpool +105; Bayern Munich -115

Total 3 Goals: Over +100; Under -115

Both Teams to Score: Yes -189; No +137

LIVERPOOL

The Reds are unbeaten over their last five games, recording three wins and a couple of ties including a 3-0 victory to Bournemouth last time out. They are sitting at the second spot of the English Premier League with 65 points out of 26 games and a 59:15 goal difference, having the same number of points as the leader Manchester City. The Reds have suffered just one defeat in the Premier League this season, losing at Manchester City 2-1, while they’ve won ten of their previous eleven games at Anfield along with a 1-1 draw with Leicester City. Liverpool has finished second in the Champions League Group C, earning three victories and three losses with a 9:7 goal difference while winning all three matchups at home.

The forward Mohamed Salah is leading the Reds, bagging 20 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions. Salah and the full-back Andrew Robertson both have made eight assists thus far. The winger Sadio Mane has scored 13 goals in 31 apps, while the striker Roberto Firmino has added 11 goals and five dishes. The manager Jurgen Klopp cannot count on the defender Joe Gomez (fractured leg) and midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee), but all other players are healthy and ready to go.

Betting Trends:

Liverpool won six of its last ten games overall along with a couple of ties and losses
Both teams scored in six of the last eight contests
Six of the last ten games had three or more goals in the total

BAYERN MUNICH

The Bavarians are on a three-game winning streak following a 3-2 victory at Augsburg this past Saturday, but they couldn’t keep the net intact for the sixth game in a row. Bayern Munich is currently at the second spot of the German Bundesliga table with 48 points out of 22 games and a 50:26 goal difference, two points behind the leader Borussia Dortmund. The Bavarians have finished at the top of the Champions League Group E, recording four victories and a pair of draws with a 15:5 goals difference, while they’ve won two of their three games on the road along with a 3-3 stalemate at Ajax.

The prolific striker Robert Lewandowski is leading the way for the Bavarians, scoring 25 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions, also adding 11 assists to his name. The forward Thomas Muller has bagged five goals and eight assists in 30 apps, while the winger Serge Gnabry has added seven goals in 26 games thus far. The full-back Joshua Kimmich is the team’s best assist-maker with 13 dishes in 32 appearances this season. The manager Niko Kovac cannot count on the midfielder Corentin Tolisso (knee), while the wingers Arjen Robben (fitness) and Kingsley Coman (ankle) are both listed as doubtful.

Betting Trends:

Bayern Munich won eight of its last ten games overall along with two draws
Both teams scored in seven of the last ten contests
Nine of the last ten games had three or more goals in the total

Match Prediction

Both Liverpool and Bayern Munich have been struggling to keep their net intact lately, while three or more goals in the total are pretty common in their recent contests in domestic competitions. I think this trend should continue even though this is the first leg of the matchup with 90 minutes more to be played in Germany. The first leg is often a tricky one for the over backers, but there is plenty of offensive firepower on both sides in this matchup, so I think we’ll see some goals. If you like betting on players to score, Mohamed Salah and Robert Lewandowski are certainly the best wagers, but there are a few more guys in Liverpool who could find the net.

When it comes to the side bet, I’m backing the hosts to grab a victory. It will be a difficult assignment as Bayern Munich is one of the toughest teams in the world, but I rely on Jurgen Klopp’s tactical ingenuity. Klopp is undoubtedly the better tactician than Niko Kovac on the other side, and I believe he will prepare his boys well to outplay their rivals.

The Pick: Liverpool (+105)

Additional Pick: Over 3 goals (+100)

Powerful Juventus head to Madrid, and this week's soccer odds and analysis
Christiano Ronaldo returns to Spain as a member of Juventus, who are the smallest of underdogs against Atletico Madrid for Wednesday's Champions League showdown.

UEFA Champions League Round of 16 action continues this week with Juventus battling against Atletico Madrid in what is expected to be a very close match, and Liverpool taking on a strong Bayern Munich outfit. We break down the odds and best bets for the early week action on the pitch to help give you a leg up on the soccer betting competition.
Clash of the Titans

The marquee matchup of the Round of 16 kicks off Tuesday, at historic Anfield, as defending runners-up Liverpool host German powerhouse Bayern Munich. Liverpool are +110 home favorites despite having picked up just five of a possible nine points over their previous three English Premier League matches heading into last weekend's domestic break. They could have their hands full with a Bayern Munich squad (+240) that has won back-to-back Bundesliga matches to close to within two points of Borussia Dortmund for top spot in the German League table.
Lyon More Like Lambs

Oddsmakers aren't giving Lyon much of a chance of advancing to the quarterfinal round at the UEFA Champions League – and given their opposition in the Round of 16, it's easy to see why. Lyon kick off their two-leg series with Barcelona as +325 home underdogs against the top team in La Liga. They sit third place in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain and Lille, and have shown strong recent form with four victories through their previous five games. But Barcelona (-125) have opened up a seven-point lead atop the Spanish League table and have just two losses in their past 20 matches overall.

Too Close to Call?

The hardest matchup to handicap of any Champions League Round of 16 encounter will take place at Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday as Atletico Madrid tangle with visiting Juventus. Atletico rebounded nicely from a disheartening two-game domestic losing streak with a 1-0 triumph over Rayo Vallecano over the weekend, but are ever-so-slim +187 underdogs against Juventus (+180), who continue to roll toward another Serie A championship. The two-time Champions League winners have yet to lose a league match this season, and are 13 points clear of runner-up Napoli.
Against the Odds

If you like long odds, Schalke are the Champions League unit for you. The German League unit is an overwhelming underdog in its Round of 16 tie with powerhouse Manchester City which kicks off Wednesday at Veltins-Arena. Schalke are +25,000 longshots to win the Champions League crown, and +1,000 to prevail in the first of its two-leg set with Man City (-350). The English Premier League leaders are the front-runner in oddsmakers' eyes at +300 to win the tournament championship and have shown terrific recent form, having outscored their last four opponents by a 15-2 margin.

Betting Trends

Liverpool have been one of the most dominant home sides in all of European soccer this year, with just one defeat through 19 games at Anfield. And the EPL's second-place side has held foes without a goal in 11 of those 19 matches – though oddsmakers don't see that happening against Bayern Munich, pricing the home team clean sheet at +250.
What might seem like a best-case scenario for Lyon on Tuesday is an outcome the French League powers have become quite accustomed to of late, having drawn their last five matches in UEFA Champions League action. And while the hosts are heavy underdogs against Barcelona, the +300 draw option could see some action here.
If you're going to lean on Atletico Madrid, you might as well go big, right? Atletico welcome Juventus to Wanda Metropolitano having kept a clean sheet in each of their last three Champions League matches – and that streak will face the ultimate test vs. a Juve side that has 52 goals from 24 Serie A games. The Atletico clean sheet is set at +175.
You'll see no talk of home team shutouts with Manchester City visiting longshot Schalke this week. Man City have seen more than 2.5 goals scored in 11 consecutive Champions League encounters, with teams averaging more than four total goals in the past three matches. The standard Over is worth -188, while the Over-3.5 play is installed at +130.
Sevilla are expected to handle visiting Valencia in UEFA Europa League on Wednesday – but bettors looking for a better payout might want to consider a more assertive approach. Sevilla have been winning at both half time and full time in 10 of their last 13 matches, and the Sevilla-Sevilla double for Wednesday's match is an intriguing +175.
It has been a while since an opponent has put one past the Villarreal 'keeper in UEFA Europa League – and the Spanish League club will look to continue that streak Thursday as it wraps up its two-leg set with Sporting CP. Villarreal have posted five shutouts in a row in the tournament – including a 1-0 win over Sporting in the first leg – and are +150 to do it again this week.
Salzburg have been one of the more consistent Over options in Europa League action – and they'll be looking to rack up the goals as they find themselves behind the 8-ball in their two-leg series with Club Bruges. Salzburg have gone Over in six of their past seven tournament games; the Over for this one is set at -138 after Club Bruges won the opener 2-1 at home.
Slavia Prague and Genk couldn't do much of anything on offense in their first go-around, giving bettors plenty of low-score options to consider in the return match Thursday. The teams dueled to a 0-0 draw last week, extending Slavia Prague's Under streak to 10 games in Europa League play; the Under-1.5 is worth +220, with a second straight scoreless tie set at +750.

Team News

Atletico Madrid will be critically shorthanded for this week's pivotal first-leg encounter with Juventus. Koke has missed his team's last four games with a thigh injury and isn't expected to return. Fullback Lucas Hernandez is also a doubt after sitting out Atletico's win over Rayo Vallecano with a knee injury. Juventus -1 is an interesting option at +500.
Liverpool could be without a handful of players as it looks to get the upper hand on Bayern Munich. A virus kept star striker Roberto Firmino out of practice Monday; he could join Virgil van Dijk (suspension), Xherdan Shaqiri (abdomen) and Dejan Lovren (hamstring) on the sidelines. Daniel Sturridge, who would likely take Firmino's place up front, is +125 to score anytime.
