With the Carolina Hurricanes already sweeping the New York Islanders out of the playoffs, there is just one game scheduled in the Stanley Cup playoffs on Sunday. That is the Dallas Stars welcoming the St. Louis Blues to Texas looking to win their series and advance.

Featured Game

Louis Blues (+104) vs. Dallas Stars (-125)

The Dallas Stars find themselves just one game away from reaching the Western Conference finals after defeating the St. Louis Blues in Game 5, 2-1. Dallas took a 2-0 lead with single goals in both the first and second periods. Ben Bishop was on top of his game, stopping all 14 shots he faced are the first two periods. St. Louis would finally get a goal a little over eight minutes into the third but could get no closer as the Stars lead the series 3-2.

Goaltending Matchup:

Jordan Binnington played extremely well in Game 5, stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced, but he was simply outdueled by Dallas goaltender Ben Bishop. After allowing at least three goals in each of his three previous starts, Binnington responded with a solid performance. He has allowed 14 goals total through the first five games of the series. Through the first 11 games of the playoffs, the St. Louis netminder has a 2.73 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage.

Bishop was absolutely outstanding in Game 5, stopping 38 of the 39 shots he faced. That is the third game out of his last four where he has allowed two goals or less. Bishop has now allowed 12 total goals through the first five games of the series. In the first 11 games of the playoffs, the Dallas goaltender has a 2.13 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage.

Stat Pack:

Blues:
Goals For: 2.55
Goals Against: 2.82
Power-Play: 20.0%
Penalty Killing: 76.0%

Stars:
Goals For: 3.00
Goals Against: 2.18
Power-Play: 21.2%
Penalty Killing: 93.5%

Trends to Know

St. Louis Blues are:

4-1 in their last five games on the road.
3-11 in their last 14 games on a Sunday.
14-6 in their last 20 games.

Dallas Stars are:

6-2 in their last eight games.
5-2 in their last seven games at home.
5-1 in their last six games when playing on one day’s rest.

Prediction

St. Louis had their chance to jump out in front in this series with Game 5 at home, but they squandered that opportunity. Now Dallas goaltender Ben Bishop looks like he has regained his mojo that he showed in the first round of the playoffs. It is true that St. Louis has come back in their previous series to win and advance, but that is a tall order against a Stars team that is playing slightly better right now and is getting the better goaltending. Binnington will probably have a solid performance, but it will not be enough to keep his team’s playoff hopes alive.

The total is set at 5.0 for this contest. After going over in each of the prior three games, these two teams went under with just three goals scored in Game 5. That is likely to be the trend moving forward, as Game 6 is likely to be a hard-fought, gritty contest where neither team will be willing to make a mistake. Bishop looks to be back on a roll, so take the Dallas Stars to win and advance with a 3-1 victory.
