The Stanley Cup playoffs continue on Friday night, with the Carolina Hurricanes looking to sweep their series with the New York Islanders. The other series pits the Dallas Stars in the St. Louis Blues, as this series is tied at two, heading back to St. Louis.

Featured Games

New York Islanders (+117) vs. Carolina Hurricanes (-141)

The New York Islanders find themselves on the brink of being swept out of the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, as they lost Game 3 in Carolina, 5-2. Twice Carolina took single goal leads only to see New York battle back in each case, but Justin Williams’ second goal of the playoffs a little over 10 minutes into the third gave the Hurricanes the lead and they would not relinquish it. TeuvoTeravainen scored two goals in the contest and Sebastian Aho had a goal and an assist for Carolina.

Goaltending Matchup:

After looking absolutely brilliant in the first round, Robin Lehner has struggled mightily against Carolina, and that continued in Game 3, giving up three goals on 36 shots. He has only allowed six goals in the series but has not been the dominant presence the Islanders needed against these red hot Hurricanes. Lehner has a 1.69 goals-against average and a .946 a percentage through his first seven playoff games this season.

Curtis McElhinney came off the bench after Petr Mrazek was injured in Game 2 and delivered a stellar performance, stopping all 17 shots he faced. He was nearly as brilliant in Game 3, stopping 28 of 30 shots he faced to earn his second victory of these playoffs. McElhinney has a 1.28 goals-against average and a .957 save percentage.

Stat Pack:

Islanders:
Goals For: 2.43
Goals Against: 2.00
Power-Play: 18.2 %
Penalty Killing: 95.0 %

Hurricanes:
Goals For: 2.90
Goals Against: 2.30
Power-Play: 8.9 %
Penalty Killing: 76.8 %

Trends to Know

New York Islanders are:

5-1 in their last six road games.
6-3 in their last nine games overall.
0-7 in their last seven conference semifinals games.

Carolina Hurricanes are:

5-0 in their last five games against teams with a winning record.
4-0 in their last four conference semifinals games.
20-6 in their last 26 games at home.

Prediction

The in the series has been the fact that they have simply not been able to score goals. Four total goals in three games is simply not going to get the job done, and there is no reason to believe that is going to change in Game 4. McElhinney has looked brilliant since taking over for the injured Mrazek, allowing the team to rest their goaltender another night.

The total is set at 5.0 for this contest. Only one of these games has gone over, and that was Game 3, and we expect that to be the case here as well. Carolina has been unreal at home this playoff season when he called four games there, and their offense has improved as well. Look for the Carolina Hurricanes to sweep and advance with a 5-1 victory in Game 4.

Dallas Stars (+127) vs. St. Louis Blues (-140)

The Dallas Stars evened their series with the St. Louis Blues thanks to a 4-2 victory in Game 4. St. Louis actually took the lead before Dallas would respond with four unanswered goals. Mats Zuccarello, Alexander Radulov, and Tyler Seguin each had two assists for the Stars.

Goaltending Matchup:

Ben Bishop stopped 27 of 29 shots he faced for the victory in Game 4. He has now allowed 11 total goals through the first four games of the series. In this year’s playoffs, Bishop has a 2.24 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage.

Jordan Binnington struggled in Game 4, giving up four goals on 31 shots. He has allowed 12 total goals in the series. In this year’s playoffs, Binnington has a 2.80 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage.

Stat Pack:

Stars:
Goals For: 3.10
Goals Against: 2.30
Power-Play: 21.9%
Penalty Killing: 92.6 %

Blues:
Goals For: 2.70
Goals Against: 2.90
Power-Play: 22.6 %
Penalty Killing: 75.0 %

Trends to Know

Dallas Stars are:

10-4 in their last 14 games on the road.
5-2 in their last seven games.
5-2 in their last seven games against teams with a winning record.

St. Louis Blues are:

14-6 in their last 20 games.
16-7 in their last 23 games against teams with a winning record.
16-5 in their last 21 games at home.

Prediction

This has turned out to be quite a series so far, as both teams have played well enough to win, and poorly enough to lose. No team has been able to take the momentum of a previous game’s victory into their next contest, so we look for St. Louis to jump out in front in this game because of the home-ice advantage.

The total is set at 5.0, and none of these games have been under that mark so far, with Game 1 being the only contest to finish with five total goals scored. At least six goals have been scored in each of the last three games, and we look for that here as well, as the St. Louis Blues defeat the Dallas Stars, 4-3.

The New York Islanders look to avoid being swept at PNC Arena in Game 4 of the NHL’s Eastern Conference Semis. This divisional matchup gets started at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, May 3, and it can be seen live on NBC Sports Network.
New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes Odds

Carolina heads into the contest as the noticeable favorite with a -145 moneyline. The line for New York now stands at +125, and oddsmakers have set the Over/Under (O/U) at 5 goals. The odds for betting the total stand at -105 for the over and -115 on the under.

Earning 2.2 units for moneyline bettors, the Hurricanes are 53-39 straight up (SU) overall this year. That winning percentage, the third-best in the Metropolitan Division in this young season, is a welcome improvement over the 36-46 record from the 2017-18 season campaign. Of its 92 games this season, 40 have gone under the total, while 40 have gone over and just two have pushed. The team is 28-17 SU at home this year.

Carolina’s offensive attack attempted 34.2 shots per game in the regular season, leading to 3.0 goals per outing (ranked 15th overall in the NHL). In the postseason, the club’s attempting an average of 32.2 shots on goal ( 2.9 goals per game).

Following a regular season where they found the net on 16.7 percent of all power-play chances (the 20th-ranked), the Hurricanes have been able to score on 8.8 percent of their extra-man advantages in the postseason. Their penalty kill has gone from 80.9 percent in the regular season to 75.8 percent in the playoffs.

Averaging 24.9 saves per game with a .914 save percentage, Petr Mrazek (29 wins, 20 losses, and four OT losses) has been the top goalkeeper for the Hurricanes this season. If the Canes choose to give him a breather, however, the team might go with Curtis McElhinney (22-13-13 record, .914 save percentage, 2.52 goals against average).

The Canes will continue to rely on leadership from Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen. Aho (90 points) has tallied 33 goals and 57 assists and has recorded two or more points in 20 different games this year. Teravainen has 26 goals and 57 assists to his credit and has recorded at least one point in 49 games.

Over on the other bench, New York is 52-37 straight up (SU) and has netted 19.1 units for moneyline bettors this year. A total of 55 of its matches have gone under the total, while 29 have gone over and just five have pushed. New York’s 26-18 SU as an away team this season.

New York has converted on just 14.9 percent of its power play chances this season, a mark that places it in the bottom- overall among NHL teams. On the other hand, its penalty kill unit is ranked 20th overall and it’s successfully killed off 80.8 percent of all opponent power plays.

New York’s skaters have been penalized only 3.3 times per game in total this season, 3.2 per game over their past five outings total, and 2.8 per game over their last five on the road. The team has been forced to kill penalties just 6.4 minutes per game over their last 10 outings.

Robin Lehner (27.2 saves per game) has been the main option in goal for New York. Lehner has 30 wins, 23 losses, and six OT losses to his credit, and has registered a .932 save percentage and 2.07 goals against average this year.

Mathew Barzal (19 goals, 49 assists) has been one of the primary playmaking threats for the visiting Islanders.
New York Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes Betting Predictions

NHL Pick: SU Winner – Hurricanes, O/U – Over
Notes

Betting Notes

For both of these teams, the over has hit in three of their past five outings.

The Hurricanes have averaged the league’s most shots on goal (34.2) while the Islanders have attempted just the 29th-most (34.2).

The Islanders are 20-14 when they serve fewer penalty minutes than their opponent and 40-26 in games where they serve fewer than 10 penalty minutes, in total.

One of the best at disrupting opposing teams, Carolina is ranked 2nd overall this season with 10.6 takeaways per game. That figure has trended down recently, however, as the team has managed 8.8 takeaways over its last 10 games and 9.2 takeaways over its last five.

New York skaters have averaged 7.0 takeaways per game over its last five road games, right in line with its season average of 6.8 takeaways per game (ranked 25th in the league).

The Dallas Stars and the St. Louis Blues are ready to clash at the Enterprise Center in Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals. The match will get underway at 9:30 p.m. ET on Friday, May 3, and you will be able to see this Central Division matchup live on NBC Sports Network.
Dallas Stars at St. Louis Blues Odds

Playing the role of favorite will be St. Louis (-150), while Dallas is a dog showing moneyline odds of +130,. If you want to put some action on the matchup’s Over/Under (O/U) total, you’ll be looking at -130 for over 5 goals and +110 for under under..

Netting 2.4 units for moneyline bettors, the Blues are 51-41 straight up (SU) overall in the 2018-19 season. That winning percentage, ranked 3rd in the Central Division in this young season, is right in line with the 44-38 record the team produced during the 2017-18 season campaign. Through 92 regular season contests, 47 of its games have gone under the total, while 39 have gone over and just six have pushed. Thus far, the team is 26-20 SU at home.

St. Louis’ offensive skaters attempted 31.5 shots per game in the regular season, resulting in 3.0 goals per outing (ranked 14th overall in the NHL). In the playoffs, the team is maintaining an average of 30.0 shots on goal 2.7 goals per game.

After producing the eighth-strongest power-play unit in the regular season (finding net on 21.3 percent of all opportunities), the Blues have connected on 22.6 percent of their extra-man advantages in the postseason. Their penalty kill has gone from 80.9 percent in the regular season to 75.0 percent in the playoffs.

Averaging 25.1 saves per game with a .905 save percentage, Jake Allen (19 wins, 27 losses, and eight OT losses) has been the top option in goal for the Blues this year. If they decide to give him a breather, however, head coach Craig Berube could turn to Jordan Binnington (30-12-12 record, .921 save percentage, 2.11 goals against average).

Ryan O’Reilly and Vladimir Tarasenko will each spearhead the attack for the Blues. O’Reilly (85 points) has tallied 30 goals and 55 assists and has recorded two or more points in 20 different games this year. Tarasenko has 38 goals and 35 assists to his name and has recorded a point in 49 games.

Dallas has netted moneyline bettors 0.9 units this year and is currently 49-43 straight up (SU). Through 92 regular season matches, 51 of its games have gone under the total, while 29 have gone over and just 12 have pushed. As the away team, Dallas is 22-24 SU.

Dallas has converted on 21.1 percent of its power play opportunities this season, a mark that’s good enough for 10th-best in the NHL. On the other hand, its penalty kill unit is ranked fifth overall and it’s successfully defended 83.8 percent of all penalties.

Dallas’ skaters have been penalized 3.5 times per game this season, and 4.6 per game over their last five on the road. The team has been forced to kill penalties just 7.6 minutes per game over their last 10 outings.

Ben Bishop (27.6 saves per game) has been the primary option in the net for Dallas. Bishop has 34 wins, 22 losses, and three overtime losses to his credit, and has registered a .934 save percentage and 2.03 goals against average this year.

Leading the offensive counter for the visiting Stars will be Tyler Seguin (36 goals, 53 assists) and Alexander Radulov (34 goals, 47 assists).
Dallas Stars vs. St. Louis Blues Betting Predictions

Pick: SU Winner – Blues, O/U – Over
Notes

Betting Notes

For both of these teams, the over has hit in three of their past five outings.

Power plays and penalty kills could prove to be critical in tonight’s game. The Stars are 16-14 when they serve fewer penalty minutes than their opponent and 30-35 in games where they serve fewer than 10 total penalty minutes. The Blues are 24-22 when they serve fewer penalty minutes than the opposition and 37-28 when they’re in the box for less than 10 minutes.

St. Louis has managed 11.8 takeaways per game over its last five home games, an improvement over its season average of 8.4 takeaways per game (ranked 8th in the league).

Dallas is ranked 21st overall this season with 7.1 takeaways per game. That figure has trended higher, as the team has averaged 7.7 takeaways over its last 10 games and 8.4 takeaways over its last five.
