It is a very light Friday night in the National Hockey League as there are only two games scheduled on March 22. This includes the Minnesota Wild traveling to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Capitals while the battle of California features the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks.

Minnesota Wild (+144) vs. Washington Capitals (-160)

This is a key game for the Minnesota Wild who are still fighting for a playoff berth. Minnesota enters this contest in fifth in the Central Division was 77 points (34-31-9). The Wild are 19-15-2 on the road this season and are 3-4-3 in their last 10 games. The Washington Capitals are looking to maintain their top place in the Metropolitan Division, as they enter this contest with 94 points (43-23-8). Washington is 21-9-6 at home this season and they are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.

Goaltending Matchup:

Devan Dubnyk will be in goal for Minnesota. Dubnyk is 28-25-3 this season with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. Dubnyk has lost four of his last five decisions but has not given up more than three goals in any of his last six starts. He is 5-4-0 in his last nine decisions.

Braden Holtby will be in goal for Washington. Holtby is 27-18-5 this season with a 2.95 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage. He has lost three of his last four starts, including giving up five goals to Tampa Bay in an overtime loss on Wednesday. Holtby is 6-3-1 in his last 10 decisions.

Hot Trends:

The Minnesota Wild are…

1-5 in their last six games.
5-2 in their last seven games on the road.
0-4 in their last four games when playing on two day’s rest.

The Washington Capitals are…

9-3 in their last 12 games.
7-0 in their last seven games against teams with a losing record.
128-61 in their last 189 games at home.

Stat Pack:

Wild:
Goals For: 2.69
Goals Against: 2.88
Power-Play: 20.8%
Penalty Killing: 80.5%

Capitals:
Goals For: 3.41
Goals Against: 3.11
Power-Play: 21.6%
Penalty Killing: 79.0%

Prediction

This game is clearly more important to Minnesota, but they are facing a Washington Capitals team that is playing exceptionally well of late. Plus, they are a better team. The Capitals have won eight straight meetings over the Wild and have won seven of the last eight meetings in Washington. There is no reason to go against trends like that, so take the Washington Capitals to win.

The total is set at 6.0 and we look for the under in this contest. It is true that Holtby has given up nine total goals in his last two starts, but both of those starts were against Tampa Bay, the team that has the highest goals per game average. Excluding the four-goal performance against Pittsburgh, Holtby has allowed two goals or less in five of his last seven starts. Add to it that Dubnyk has not allowed more than three goals in his last six starts and the under looks like the smart bet. Look for the Washington Capitals to win, 4-1.

Two Games to Watch

San Jose Sharks (-175) vs. Anaheim Ducks (+145)

This Pacific Division battle pits two teams on opposite ends of the division. Anaheim enters in seventh place in the division with 69 points (30-36-9). The Ducks are 16-14-8 at home this season and are 6-4-0 in their last 10 games. San Jose is in second in the division with 94 points (43-23-8). They are 20-15-3 on the road and 6-4-0 in their last 10, including losing their last four games.

Why San Jose Wins:

Sharks are 9-3 in their last 12 games on the road.
Ducks are 11-29 in their last 40 games.
Ducks are 6-13 in their last 19 games at home.
Road team has won seven of the last 10 meetings.
Sharks are 8-1 in the last nine meetings.
Sharks have won six straight in Anaheim.

Why Anaheim Wins:

Sharks have lost their last four games.
Jon Gibson has allowed three goals are last in five straight starts.
Gibson has won four of his last five starts.

What About the Total?

Go over 5.5, because…

Martin Jones has a 3.41 goals-against average in his last four appearances.
Total has gone over 3-1-2 in the last six meetings.
San Jose has gone over in seven straight games when playing on no day’s rest.
