It is a very light schedule in the National Hockey League on Wednesday, March 13, as there were only three games scheduled. The highlight of the night will be when the red-hot Edmonton Oilers, winners of seven of their last 10 games, welcome the New Jersey Devils to town. In other action, the New York Rangers take on the Vancouver Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks battle the Toronto Maple Leafs as all three games will take place north of the border.

New Jersey Devils (+202) vs. Edmonton Oilers (-225)

The New Jersey Devils are in last in the Metropolitan Division with 59 points (25-36-9). They are 8-24-3 on the road this season and are 2-7-1 in their last 10 games, including losing their last three. The Edmonton Oilers are in fifth place in the Pacific Division with 69 points (31-31-7). Edmonton is 16-16-2 at home this season and they are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.

Goaltending Matchup:

Cory Schneider will be in goal for New Jersey. Schneider is 4-10-0 this season with a 3.20 goals-against average and a .897 save percentage. Schneider has lost his last two starts and three of his last four overall. Schneider is 4-5-0 in his last nine decisions.

Edmonton will start Mikko Koskinen in goal. Koskinen is 21-15-2 this season with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage. The Oilers goaltender has been especially hot of late, winning five straight games while allowing just nine goals in that span. He is 7-1-0 in his last eight decisions.

Hot Trends:

The New Jersey Devils are…

21-45 in their last 66 games.
19-45 in their last 64 games on the road.
1-7 in their last eight games against teams from the Western Conference.

The Edmonton Oilers are…

5-1 in their last six games.
4-1 in their last five games at home.
3-8 in their last 11 games against teams with a winning percentage below .400.

Stat Pack:

Devils:
Goals For: 2.75
Goals Against: 3.30
Power-Play: 17.6%
Penalty Killing: 83.8%

Oilers:
Goals For: 2.78
Goals Against: 3.20
Power-Play: 21.0%
Penalty Killing: 75.6%

Prediction

The Devils have not fared well against the New Jersey Devils of late, losing four of the last five meetings, including losing four of the last five in Edmonton. The home team has won five of the last seven meetings and New Jersey enters this contest as losers of three straight. You simply can’t ignore trends like that, so the Edmonton Oilers become the smart pick.

The total is set at 6.0. These two teams have gone over in three of the last five in Edmonton but have gone under in 11 of the last 17 games against each other overall. New Jersey has gone over in five of their last eight on the road but has gone under in three of their last five overall. Edmonton has gone under in four of the last six overall and have gone under in four straight at home. It is those last two odds that have us leaning toward the under. We very well believe this game will push, as Edmonton wins 4-2, but if you have to go a way, go under at a 4-1 Oilers win.

Two Games to Watch

New York Rangers (+110) vs. Vancouver Canucks (-120)

The New York Rangers are in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division with 69 points (28-28-13). New York is 11-17-5 on the road this season and they are 2-3-5 in their last 10 games. The Vancouver Canucks are in sixth in the Pacific Division with 65 points (28-32-9). Vancouver is 15-13-4 at home this season and they are 2-6-2 in their last 10 games.

Why New York Wins:

Canucks are 1-5 in their last six games.
Canucks are 1-4 in their last five games against teams with a losing record.
Rangers are 5-1 in the last six meetings between these two teams in Vancouver.
Rangers have won the last four meetings.
Henrik Lundqvist has allowed two goals in each of his last two appearances for New York.
Jacob Markstrom allowed five goals in his last start.

Why Vancouver Wins:

Canucks are 4-0 in their last four games at home when facing a team with a winning percentage on the road of less than .400.
Rangers are 17-41 in their last 58 games on the road.
Rangers are 1-7 in their last eight games.

What About the Total?

Go over 5.5, because…

Total has gone over in four of the last six meetings.
Markstrom allowed five goals on 16 shots in his last outing.

Chicago Blackhawks (+205) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (-230)

The Chicago Blackhawks enter this contest in last place in the Central Division with 69 points (30-30-9). Chicago is 14-17-3 on the road this season and they are 6-4-0 in their last 10 games, including winning their last three. The Toronto Maple Leafs are in third in the Atlantic Division with 89 points (42-22-5). Toronto is 21-13-1 at home this season and they are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.

Why Chicago Wins:

Blackhawks are 14-6 in their last 20 games.
Blackhawks are 5-1 in their last six against teams from the Atlantic.
Blackhawks have won 13 of the last 18 meetings between these two teams.
Frederik Andersen gave up four goals in his last start for Toronto.

Why Toronto Wins:

Maple Leafs are 39-17 in their last 56 games at home.
Maple Leafs are 37-18 in their last 55 games against teams with a losing record.
Cam Ward has lost two straight games for Chicago, and has given up at least four goals in each of his last five starts.

What About the Total?

Go over 7.0, because…

Andersen gave up four goals in his last start.
Ward has a 4.20 goals-against average over his last five starts.
Chicago has gone over in eight of their last 11 against teams with a winning record.
Chicago has gone over in 36 of their last 51 games.
Toronto has gone over in five straight games at home.
Toronto has gone over in seven of their last nine at home.
