There are only five games scheduled in the National Hockey League on Sunday, March 10, but there are some absolutely incredible contests on tap. It starts with a fantastic battle between the Winnipeg Jets and the Washington Capitals, two of the top seven or eight teams in the NHL. There is a great Pacific Division battle between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Calgary Flames and the Boston Bruins take on the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Winnipeg Jets(+120) vs.Washington Capitals(-133)

This should be a great matchup between two teams that are in first place in their respective divisions. The Winnipeg Jets are in first in the Central Division with 84 points (40-23-4). Winnipeg is 18-15-0 on the road this season and they are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games. The Washington Capitals are in first in the Metropolitan Division with 87 points (40-21-7). Washington is 20-9-5 at home this season and they are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games, including winning their last six.

Goaltending Matchup:

Connor Hellebuyck will be in net for the Winnipeg Jets. Hellebuyck is 28-18-2 this season with a 2.99 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. He gave up four goals on 36 shots in his last appearance and is 4-4-1 in his last nine decisions.

Braden Holtby will be in goal for Washington. Holtby is 26-16-4 this season with a 2.88 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. The Washington goaltender is coming off a shutout against the New Jersey Devils on March 8 where he stopped all 25 shots. That was his fifth victory in a row and he is 7-3-0 in his last 10 starts.

Hot Trends:

The Winnipeg Jets are…

4-1 in their last five starts.
13-5 in their last 18 games playing on one day’s rest.
1-6 in their last seven games on a Saturday.

The Washington Capitals are…

3-8 in their last 11 games at home.
1-5 in their last six games against teams with a winning record.

Stat Pack:

Jets:
Goals For: 3.43
Goals Against: 2.96
Power-Play: 25.7%
Penalty Killing: 78.6%

Capitals:
Goals For:3.38
Goals Against: 3.09
Power-Play:22.0%
Penalty Killing:79.2%

Prediction

The trends are definitely in favor of Washington in this game. Not only are they looking for their seventh straight victory, but they are 11-4 in the last 15 meetings against Winnipeg and are 17-5 in the last 22 meetings in Washington. In addition, the home team has won four straight in this series. No need to buck those trends here.

The total is set at 6.5 and going over seems like a smart bet here despite the fact that Holtby is coming off of a shutout. Hellebuyck has been inconsistent of late, allowing at least four goals in four of his last nine appearances, including seven against Colorado on February 20. In addition, these two teams have gone over in 21 of the last 29 meetings in Washington. Winnipeg has gone over in three of their last four games and Washington has gone over in five of their last six at home. Look for the Washington Capitals to win, 5-2.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are in third in the Metropolitan division with 81 points (36-23-9). Pittsburgh is 19-12-2 at home this season and they are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.
