NHL – TRENDS OF THE DAY

There are six games scheduled in the National Hockey League on Monday, February 25. This starts with a great Pacific Division battle of Ducks vs. Canucks when the Anaheim Ducks travel north of the border to take on the Vancouver Canucks. In other great action, the Florida Panthers travel to take on the Colorado Avalanche and the Montréal Canadiens battle the New Jersey Devils.

Anaheim Ducks (+115) vs. Vancouver Canucks (-140)

The Anaheim Ducks are in seventh place in the division with 57 points (24-29-9), while the Vancouver Canucks are in fifth place with 60 points (26-28-8). Anaheim is 12-20-1 on the road this season while Vancouver is 13-12-4 at home. The Ducks are 3-7-0 in their last 10 while the Canucks are 2-6-2 in their last 10.

Goaltending Matchup:

John Gibson will start for Anaheim. Gibson is 17-19-6 this season with a 2.93 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. He has lost his last four starts and is 2-6-2 in his last 10 decisions.

Jacob Markstrom has not performed much better this season. Markstrom is 22-18-4 with a 2.78 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. He has lost his last three decisions, allowing three goals in each of those contests. Markstrom is 3-5-2 in his last 10 decisions.

Hot Trends:

The Anaheim Ducks are…

5-22 in their last 27 games.
1-6 in their last seven games against Pacific Division teams.
4-9 in their last 13 games against teams with a losing record.

The Vancouver Canucks are…

1-4 in their last five games at home.
1-5 in their last six games.
17-40 in their last 57 games against Pacific Division teams.

Stat Pack:

Ducks:
Goals For: 2.19
Goals Against: 3.05
Power-Play: 15.2%
Penalty Killing: 80.8%

Canucks:
Goals For: 2.73
Goals Against: 3.10
Power-Play: 15.2%
Penalty Killing: 80.1%

Prediction

When you have two of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL squaring off, you already expect a low-scoring affair. Add to it that both teams are playing poorly at this point in the season, and this may be a dog of a game. Neither team has a very effective power-play, but both teams have solid penalty killing units. Anaheim has dominated Vancouver of late, winning six of the last seven contests between these two teams and 10 of the last 14 in Vancouver. However, we buck the trend here. The home team has won the last four meetings and we look for that trend to be the one to ride with.

The total is set at 5.0 for this contest, telling you that oddsmakers expect this to be one of the lowest scoring games in quite a while. The total has gone under in three of the last five meetings between these two teams in Vancouver and was a push in the other two. Take Vancouver to win, 3-1.

Two Games to Watch

Montréal Canadiens (-135) vs. New Jersey Devils (+115)

The Montréal Canadiens are in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 73 points (33-22-7). New Jersey is in the last place in the Metropolitan Division with 56 points (24-30-8). Montréal is 14-12-3 on the road this season and they are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games. New Jersey is 16-10-5 at home this season and they are 4-5-1 in their last 10.

Why Montréal Wins:

Devils are 2-6 in their last eight games when playing on one day’s rest.
Devils are 16-35 in their last 51 games against teams with a winning record.
Keith Kinkaid has allowed at least four goals in five of his last six starts, allowing 27 total goals in that span.

Why New Jersey Wins:

Devils are 5-2 in their last seven games against Atlantic Division teams.
Canadiens are 2-5 in their last seven games.
Canadians have lost their last four games on the road.
Devils have won the last four games between these two teams.
Carey Price allowed four goals in his last start.

What About the Total?

Go over 6.5, because…

Total has gone over in five of the last eight meetings in New Jersey.
Kinkaid has allowed 16 total goals in his last three starts.
Price allowed for goals in his last start.
New Jersey has gone over in five of their last seven at home.

Florida Panthers (+125) vs. Colorado Avalanche (-145)

The Florida Panthers are in sixth place in the Atlantic Division was 62 points (27-25-8). Florida is 11-14-3 on the road this season and they are 6-4-0 in their last 10 games. The Colorado Avalanche are in fifth place in the Central Division with 65 points (27-24-11). Colorado is 12-12-5 at home this season and they are 5-2-3 in their last 10 games, including winning their last four.

Why Florida Wins:

Panthers are 4-1 in their last five games.
Panthers are 5-2 in their last seven games against teams with a losing record.
Avalanche are 2-6 in their last eight games at home.
Avalanche are 3-9 in their last 12 against teams with a losing record.
Roberto Luongo allowed one goal in his last start and has not allowed more than two in his last three starts.

Why Colorado Wins:

Avalanche have won four straight games.
Panthers are 2-6 in their last eight games on the road.
Semyon Varlamov has won his last three starts, giving up four total goals in that span.

What About the Total?

Go under 6.5, because…

Total has gone under in three of the last five meetings in Colorado.
Varlamov has a 1.33 goals-against average over his last three starts.
Luongo allowed one goal in his last start.
