NHL Schedule Betting Tips February 18-24, 2019

Adam Burke

The mad dash to the Trade Deadline is on in the NHL. As mentioned last week, teams are playing with an extra sense of urgency in hopes of getting reinforcements from the front office. Weaker teams with no playoff prospects are sitting on pins and needles wondering who will stay and who will go during this year’s flurry of transactions.

The Trade Deadline is a week from Monday. As trades happen, keep an eye out for some teams because they’ll be a little bit shorthanded when players are sent to a new location and will have to fill those spots with scratches and/or minor league call-ups. Also, that could lead to a little bit of deflation from that team, as they know their season is over and it’s now about planning for the future.

In terms of buyers, there could be some extra pep in the steps of those squads, but also, if roster players are moved, that can sometimes throw off the chemistry as well. There is no blanket statement to make, except to say that you want to evaluate all teams on a case-by-case basis.

Here are some situational spots to consider for the week ending February 24:

Monday February 18

Tampa Bay Lightning at Columbus Blue Jackets – This isn’t necessarily a bad situational spot for either team, but it is something of a measuring stick game for the Jekyll and Hyde Jackets. They look like world-beaters one night and like a mediocre team the next night. Facing the best team in the league could be a litmus test as the front office is tasked with tough decisions this week regarding Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky. Those two are impending free agents and neither has shown a desire to re-sign in Columbus in recent months. The Jackets may be in the unenviable position of being both a buyer and a seller. With four games in six days this week and this spotlight game, we’ll see how the team plays. Right now, they seem unfazed by the trade talks, as they are in one of their hot spells.

Arizona Coyotes at Calgary Flames – The Flames are coming off of a challenging road trip to host the Coyotes. It is generally thought to be a good spot to fade a team coming off of a trip of four or more games, particularly if the road trip required the team to go a long way from home. Before the All-Star Break, the Flames were in D.C. and Raleigh. After the Break, they hosted the Sharks and then left for four games in Vancouver, Tampa, Sunrise, and Pittsburgh. Now they’re back home against a competent Coyotes bunch. The dog may be worth a look here at a rather big price against the struggling Flames bunch.

Boston Bruins at San Jose Sharks – Obvious spot is obvious here. The Bruins are playing the third game in four nights on the California swing and draw far and away the best of the bunch in this game against the Sharks. This is the last game of the homestand for San Jose as well, so they’ll certainly be fired up in this spot before leaving on Wednesday for Pittsburgh. The Bruins are in Vegas on Wednesday with Tuesday night off, so I’d be looking at the Sharks here, even with the inflated price when you look at the total package.

Tuesday February 19

Columbus Blue Jackets at Montreal Canadiens – Will there be a post-Lightning hangover effect win or lose for Columbus? Montreal, with should-be-coach-of-the-year bench boss Claude Julien, is playing some pretty decent hockey these days and is not a pushover. This is a back-to-back with travel for Columbus, though Montreal is playing a fourth game in six days, with the first three on the road. Keep an eye on what happens with CBJ on Monday and then consider this game accordingly.

New York Rangers at Carolina Hurricanes – The next game is a better example of this, but I’d have a tough time backing the Rangers here. This game in Raleigh concludes a rather long and strange road trip. The Rangers went all the way to Winnipeg, then back to Buffalo, then to Pittsburgh for the NBC Game of the Week, and are now down in Raleigh before heading back home. It has been a weird travel schedule for the week-long roadie. This is the third and final game of the homestand for the surging Hurricanes, who are finally living up to their advanced metrics by getting some goaltending. I like Carolina here.

Toronto Maple Leafs at St. Louis Blues – This is my favorite spot of the week and I’ll be on the Blues. The Maple Leafs are finishing up a rather lengthy road swing with stops in Montreal, Manhattan, Denver, Vegas, and the Phoenix area, in a homecoming game for Auston Matthews. On Thursday, they’ll host the reigning Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals. The Leafs are playing some excellent puck right now, but the last game of the road trip after games in Vegas and Arizona feels like a total flat spot, especially with two days off to putter around in the Arch City before the game is actually played.

Arizona Coyotes at Edmonton Oilers – The Coyotes are in another decent spot on Tuesday night. Sure, it’s a back-to-back with travel, but it’s a puddle jumper flight from Calgary to Edmonton. The Oilers are playing their first game back off a three-game roadie and have a Rapid Revenge spot on deck against the Islanders. Edmonton and New York played on Saturday night in Brooklyn. While this is a conference game, the Oilers have fallen out of the playoff picture in dramatic fashion since mid-January. The ‘Yotes may be worth another road look.

Wednesday February 20

Boston Bruins at Vegas Golden Knights – The pickings are slim on Wednesday, as we are extremely light on situational spots. The Bruins play a fourth game in six nights on this Western swing by taking on VGK. The Knights play a standalone road game in Denver on Monday and come right back home, so this spot isn’t bad at all for them. VGK would certainly be the preferred side here based on the schedule, but let’s see what, if anything, they do from a Trade Deadline standpoint by this time.

Thursday February 21

San Jose Sharks at Pittsburgh Penguins – The Sharks embark on a four-game road trip to the Eastern Time Zone this week, beginning with this one against the Penguins. They’ll be seen in this situational article over the weekend. This spot isn’t good or bad. They have two days to make the trip and get acclimated to the time change. The Penguins aren’t in any sort of compromising spot. This should just be a good game. But, as I said, we’ll see the Sharks in a little bit.

Washington Capitals at Toronto Maple Leafs – This is a big one in the Eastern Conference and a little bit of a weird spot for both teams. The Capitals just played the California swing, but played it over five days. With two days off to get to Toronto, travel isn’t a big concern. The Maple Leafs are in their first game back after a long road trip that featured some emotional games. The Leafs are trying to establish themselves in that upper echelon of teams, whereas the Capitals have done that year after year and finally cemented it with a Cup. I think this game means more to Toronto in that sense, but the spot, oddly enough, seems to favor Washington. I probably won’t be invested here, but there are a lot of talking points.

New York Islanders at Edmonton Oilers – This is a tricky spot for the Oilers. They play a back-to-back in Alberta, with this Rapid Revenge Theory spot against the Oilers. The Islanders just hosted the Oilers on Saturday. Now they play at Rogers Place a few days later. Calgary is a team that gets the competitive juices flowing a lot more than Edmonton, so this could be a little bit of a flat spot for the Isles. If the home price is big enough on Edmonton, I might be interested.

Arizona Coyotes at Vancouver Canucks – Obvious spot is obvious here. Coyotes play their third game in four nights on the Western Canada swing and the Canucks will take the ice as a very well-rested bunch with four days off prior to this one. The Canucks played four games in six days last week, including the California swing, so the respite was likely good for them. I’d look at Arizona in the first period, but look for the Canucks to hit their stride and take the game over in the second and third periods to get the win. In a perfect world, Arizona will win both of those spots previously discussed and then have a little recency bias in their price for this one.

Friday February 22

Columbus Blue Jackets at Ottawa Senators – The weird week for the Blue Jackets continues. The week started with a home-road back-to-back. The week ends with a road-home back-to-back. The team had to kill a couple days in the Ottawa/Montreal area in advance of this game with the Senators, who are a clear seller in the Trade Deadline market. We’ll have to see what moves they make and who may be sitting out to avoid injury. The Jackets host San Jose on Saturday, but they aren’t really in look-ahead mode. I sort of like them here, but again, we’ll have to see how the week progresses on the trade front. The Senators are also in a road-home back-to-back, which adds to my lean on CBJ.

Colorado Avalanche at Chicago Blackhawks – As bad as things started for the Blackhawks, this game has become a battle for the basement in the Central Division. With new head coach Jeremy Colliton, the Blackhawks have actually been a solid team. The Avalanche just can’t really seem to string together strong performances. Some would have considered this a look-ahead spot in the past, with the Avs against the Predators on Saturday, but this is a fight for your life type of game now. The Blackhawks, amazingly, seem better equipped for such a contest right now.

Anaheim Ducks at Calgary Flames – The Ducks are 29-1 in their last 30 home games against the Flames. It is one of the NHL’s greatest statistical oddities. Does that factor into the equation for the Flames when those two teams meet in the Saddledome? I’m not sure, but I’d like to think that they are aware of the history. With Calgary at home here, I’d expect them to grab the two points and get some measure of revenge.

Saturday February 23

Washington Capitals at Buffalo Sabres – Of course this weird and wonky road trip for the Capitals ends with a day game. The short trip from Toronto to Buffalo shouldn’t be that big of a deal, but the Capitals play at 1 p.m. ET against the Sabres and then head home to prepare for tomorrow’s afternoon game against the Rangers. They could be part of the way to the plane as this one goes along. I’d look at the Sabres at a home dog price.

Boston Bruins at St. Louis Blues – This is another bad spot for the Bruins. They do have two days off before this game, but this is a random 3 p.m. CT start time for the last game of the road trip. The Blues have had a lighter schedule, especially from a travel standpoint this week. The Bruins are definitely the better team, but the spot could be something of an equalizer here.

Colorado Avalanche at Nashville Predators – The Avalanche have played themselves into a seller’s position at the Trade Deadline. We’ll have to see when those moves start to happen because this is a fourth game in six days and it comes against one of the league’s top teams. Nashville has been mired in a little bit of a tough stretch going into this week, so we’ll see if they have righted the ship. This will be chalky as all get out, but could be a money line parlay piece somewhere.

New York Islanders at Vancouver Canucks – For being a busy Saturday card, there aren’t a ton of great spots. The Islanders take on the Canucks in one of those third game in four nights spots in Western Canada. That’s a pretty obvious situational spot that does favor the well-rested Canucks. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a flat effort here, as the Islanders return home to start a five-game homestand.

Sunday February 24

New York Rangers at Washington Capitals – This is a back-to-back with travel for both teams, but this spot is better for the visitors. It’s the first home game back for the Capitals after being out on the NHL highway for a couple of weeks. The Rangers spent the previous four days at home. Washington is the better team, as we all know, but the spot could be the equalizer in this game, much like the above between the Bruins and Blues.

San Jose Sharks at Detroit Red Wings – Remember how I told you that we’d see the Sharks again? Here they are. This is a back-to-back with travel from Columbus to Detroit. This is also a crazy turnaround. The game against Columbus is a 5 p.m. ET puck drop, so the team will likely get to the airport around 9 or 9:30 after fulfilling media obligations and such. It isn’t a long flight, but Detroit’s airport is a good half hour from downtown, unless the team lands at a smaller regional airport on a charter plane. That likely puts the Sharks into their hotel around 2 a.m. or so, all things considered. The game against the Red Wings is a 3 p.m. ET puck drop. By no means is Detroit is a good team, but the spot really does favor them here in a rather dramatic way.

NHL – TRENDS OF THE DAY

It is an exciting Monday in the National Hockey League starting with the Tampa Bay Lightning looking for their sixth straight win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. In other great action, the Ottawa Senators take on the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Boston Bruins head to California to take on the San Jose Sharks.

Featured Game

Tampa Bay Lightning (-140) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (+115)

This should be a great battle between two teams who could very well meet in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Tampa Bay Lightning have the best record in the NHL with 92 points (44-11-4). They are 20-6-2 on the road and are 7-1-2 in their last 10, including winning their last six games. The Columbus Blue Jackets are in third in the Metropolitan Division with 69 points (33-21-3). Columbus is 15-12-2 at home this season and they are 5-5-0 in their last 10 games.

Goaltending Matchup:

Andrei Vasilevskiy is 25-7-3 this season with a 2.32 goals against average and a .928 save percentage. The Tampa Bay goaltender has won his last four starts, including pitching shutouts in the last two.

Sergei Bobrovsky is 24-17-1 this season with a 2.88 goals against average and a .904 save percentage. The Columbus goaltender has won five of his last six starts, giving up 13 goals total in that span.

Hot Trends:

The Tampa Bay Lightning are…

40-13 in their last 53 games.
36-17 in their last 53 on the road.
40-11 in their last 51 against Eastern Conference teams.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are…

5-1 in their last six games.
8-2 in their last 10 games on a Monday.
1-4 in their last five games at home.

Stat Pack:

Lightning:
Goals For: 3.88
Goals Against: 2.68
Power-Play: 29.7%
Penalty Killing: 84.6%

Blue Jackets:
Goals For: 3.25
Goals Against: 3.00
Power-Play: 18.0%
Penalty Killing: 83.9%

Prediction

Tampa Bay has beaten Columbus in each of the last five meetings between these two teams and they have won five of the last six in Columbus. We like how Columbus is playing, but how can you go against a team that has won six straight and their goaltender has blanked his opponent in each of his last two starts?

The total has gone under in eight of the last 10 in Columbus and has gone under in 21 of the last 30 overall. That looks like a good bet here as well, especially considering that both Bobrovsky and Vasilevskiy are playing exceptionally well. We like the under as Tampa Bay wins, 3-1.

Two Games to Watch

Ottawa Senators (+140) vs. Chicago Blackhawks (-165)

The Ottawa Senators are in last in the Atlantic Division with 49 points (22-31-5). They are 8-19-1 on the road and are 3-7-0 in their last 10 games. The Chicago Blackhawks are in last in the Central Division with 57 points (24-26-9). Chicago is 13-11-6 at home this season and they are 8-2-0 in their last 10.

Why Ottawa Wins:

Blackhawks are 5-17 in their last 22 games on a Monday.
Cam Ward gave up five goals in his last start.
Road team has won four of the last five meetings.

Why Chicago Wins:

Blackhawks are 5-1 in their last six games at home.
Blackhawks are 8-2 in their last 10.
Senators are 3-7 in their last 10 games.
Senators are 16-48 in their last 64 games on the road.
Craig Anderson has lost five straight starts.
Cam Ward has won six of his last eight starts.
Blackhawks have won four straight meetings.
Blackhawks have won eight of the last nine meetings in Chicago.

What About the Total?

Go over 6.5, because…

Ward allowed five goals in his last start.
Anderson allowed five goals in his last start and has allowed 18 goals in his last five starts.
Ottawa has gone over in 19 of their last 29 on the road.
Chicago has gone over in 13 of their last 16 at home.

Boston Bruins (+120) vs. San Jose Sharks (-145)

The Boston Bruins are in second in the Atlantic Division with 76 points (34-17-8). Boston is 13-10-5 on the road this season and is 7-0-3 in their last 10 games, including winning their last six. The San Jose Sharks are tied for first in the Pacific Division with 77 points (35-17-7). San Jose is 19-5-4 at home this season and they are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games.

Why Boston Wins:

Bruins have won five straight.
Bruins have won eight straight games against Pacific Division teams.
Bruins are 6-2 in their last eight on the road.
Tuukka Rask has won five straight starts, allowing 10 goals in the span.
Rask has earned points in each of his last nine starts.

Why San Jose Wins:

Sharks are 5-0 in their last five at home when facing a team with a losing record on the road.
Sharks are 21-8 in their last 29 games.
Bruins are 4-10 in their last 14 games on the road when facing a team with a winning percentage at home of greater than .600.
Martin Jones has won six of his last seven starts.

What About the Total?

Go under 6.0, because…

Total has gone under in four of the last five meetings.
Total has gone under in eight of the last 10 in San Jose.
Rask has allowed 10 goals in his last five starts.
Boston has gone under in 17 of their last 25 on the road.
San Jose has gone under in four of their last five at home.
