NHL – TRENDS OF THE DAY

It’s a very light night in the National Hockey League on Friday, February 8 as there is only one game scheduled. That is a great Metropolitan Division battle between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers, two teams that are separated by six points in the standings.

Lines provided by BetDSI Sportsbook. Get the trends for all National Hockey League Games here.

Featured Game

Carolina Hurricanes (-125) vs. New York Rangers (+105)

These two Metropolitan Division foes are separated by just six points in the standings. The Carolina Hurricanes enter this contest in fifth place of the division with 60 points (27-21-6), while the New York Rangers are in seventh place with 54 points (23-22-8). Carolina is 13-12-2 on the road this season while New York is 14-8-6 at home. Both teams are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.

Goaltending Matchup:

The Hurricanes will start Curtis McElhinney in goal. McElhinney is 13-6-1 this season with a 2.50 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage. The Carolina goaltender is coming off a tough start where he allowed five goals on 39 shots to the Buffalo Sabres, yet the Hurricanes won this game in overtime, 6-5. That was his second win in a row and his sixth in his last seven decisions.

Henrik Lundqvist will be in goal for New York. Lundqvist is 16-13-8 this season with a 3.04 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. The New York goaltender has lost his last two starts but had victories in his four prior starts. He has allowed seven total goals in his last two outings.

Hot Trends:

The Carolina Hurricanes are…

4-0 in their last four games when playing with zero days rest.
11-5 in their last 16 games.
9-4 in their last 13 games on Friday.

The New York Rangers are…

0-5 in their last five games on Friday.
4-10 and their last 14 home games.
6-2 in their last eight games when playing with one days rest.

Stat Pack:

Hurricanes:
Goals For: 2.9
Goals Against: 2.9
Power-Play: 15.9%
Penalty Killing: 79.8%

Rangers:
Goals For: 2.9
Goals Against: 3.4
Power-Play: 21.2%
Penalty Killing: 76.7%

Prediction

Carolina may be ahead in the standings, but there are a number of trends that are heading New York’s direction. It starts with the fact that the Rangers are 36-15 in the last 51 games between these two teams and are 26-5 in the last 31 meetings in New York. The home team has also won 16 of the last 21 meetings between these two teams. Carolina will be in the second game of back-to-back nights, and McElhinney did not look particularly good against Buffalo on Thursday. Take the New York Rangers.

The total is set at 6.0 for this game. These two teams have gone over in six of the last nine meetings and have gone over in four of the last six in New York, with the other two finishing at even. We know that Carolina can give up some goals, allowing five against Buffalo, and that has shown in the fact that they have gone over in 10 of their last 15 games and four of their last five against teams with a losing record. New York has gone over in seven of their last nine at home and 18 of their last 27 overall. Take the New York Rangers to win, 5-4.
