NHL – TRENDS OF THE DAY

Monday, February 11 is a light day in the National Hockey League as there are only three games scheduled. That begins with a great battle in the state of Pennsylvania when the Pittsburgh Penguins travel to Philadelphia looking for their sixth straight victory over the Flyers in the City of Brotherly Love. In other great action, the Los Angeles Kings take on the Washington Capitals and the San Jose Sharks battle the Vancouver Canucks.

Featured Game

Pittsburgh Penguins (-120) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (+100)

Pittsburgh is in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division with 63 points (28-20-7), six points ahead of Philadelphia who is in sixth in the division (25-23-7). Pittsburgh is 13-10-5 on the road this season and they are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games. The Flyers are 14-10-4 at home and they are red-hot right now, going 9-0-1 in their last 10 games.

Goaltending Matchup:

Matt Murray will be in goal for Pittsburgh. Murray is 15-9-1 this season with a 2.97 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. Murray has lost his last two starts and has lost three of his last four, giving up 14 combined goals in that span. He is 6-4-0 in his last 10 games.

The Flyers will send Carter Hart between the pipes. Hart is 11-5-1 this season with a 2.45 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. The Flyers goalie has won his last eight starts, giving up 19 total goals in that span. Carter is 9-1-0 in his last 10 games.

Hot Trends:

The Pittsburgh Penguins are…

11-4 in their last 15 games against teams with a losing record.
2-5 in their last seven games on a Monday.
0-4 in their last four games.

The Philadelphia Flyers are…

9-1 in their last 10 games.
7-1 in their last eight games at home.
6-0 in their last six games against teams with a winning record.

Stat Pack:

Penguins:
Goals For: 3.42
Goals Against: 3.09
Power-Play: 23.5%
Penalty Killing: 82%

Flyers:
Goals For: 2.89
Goals Against: 3.29
Power-Play: 16.5%
Penalty Killing: 76.2%

Prediction

The Penguins have won eight of the last 11 meetings between these two teams, including winning the last five in Philadelphia. The road team has won six straight in this series, odds that would tell you that Pittsburgh is clearly the favorite in this game. They have figured out something about the Flyers that give them a gigantic edge.

However, Philadelphia enters this game red-hot while the Penguins are struggling. You simply can’t ignore how well Philadelphia is playing lately, so look for the Flyers to snap that cold streak against the Penguins.

The total is set at 6.5 for this game. The total has gone over in seven of the last 12 meetings between these two teams, including going over in three of the last five and Philadelphia. In the last two starts for Murray, he has a goals-against average of 3.00 while Hart has a 1.50 in his last two starts. Philadelphia has gone under in five of their last seven games and we look for that trend to continue here. Take the Philadelphia Flyers to win, 3-2.

Two Games to Watch

Los Angeles Kings (+180) vs. Washington Capitals (-220)

The Los Angeles Kings are tied for last in the Pacific Division with 51 points (23-27-5). Los Angeles is 11-14-4 on the road this season and are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games. Why Los Angeles Wins:

Kings are 2-6 in their last eight games against teams with a winning record.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers Preview and Predictions 2019-02-11

NHL Predictions 10th February 2019 by Gracenote
Penguins vs. Flyers Preview and Predictions

The recent play of the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins have the Keystone State representatives headed in opposite directions, with a 9-0-1 stretch putting the former within earshot of the latter in their respective pursuits of a playoff berth. The Flyers look to close the gap even further when they host the Penguins on Monday.

Carter Hart, who boasts an 8-0-0 mark and .934 save percentage during Philadelphia's last 10 games, will look to snap a tie with Jocelyn Thibault (Quebec, 1995) for the NHL record of consecutive victories by a rookie before turning 21. "I don't really think about that. I don't really look at those things," the 20-year-old Hart told reporters after making 30 saves in Saturday's 6-2 romp over Anaheim. "Sure it's cool, but we just want to win hockey games and right now we've been playing really good hockey." Conversely, Pittsburgh heads into the finale of a three-game road trip with four straight losses and six in its last eight (2-5-1). "I still think to a certain extent, the type of mistakes that we make, we beat ourselves," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan told reporters following Saturday's 5-4 setback at Tampa Bay.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet, TVA, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (28-20-7): Captain Sidney Crosby, who leads the team with 62 points, celebrated playing in his franchise-best 916th game by setting up Tanner Pearson's third-period goal against the Lightning. The two-time Hart Trophy recipient has tormented Philadelphia throughout his career, scoring in a 4-2 loss on Dec. 1 to boost his point total to a staggering 94 (39 goals, 55 assists) in 64 career matches with the Flyers. Evgeni Malkin (team-leading 41 assists), who also captured Hart Trophy honors in 2012, could miss his sixth straight game with an upper-body injury.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (25-23-7): Sean Couturier pushed his goal-scoring run to four games by netting his team-leading 23rd tally midway into the first period versus the Ducks. The 26-year-old set up two other goals to push his point streak to six contests (four goals, five assists) while fellow forward Jakub Voracek has two goals and six assists during his six-game run. Couturier set up Voracek's goal with 22 seconds remaining in the third period to seal Philadelphia's victory over Pittsburgh in December, the teams' first meeting since their six-game first-round series that was won by the Penguins.

OVERTIME

1. Penguins RW Phil Kessel has been held off the scoresheet in each of his last four games.

2. Philadelphia captain F Claude Giroux, who has team-high totals in assists (42) and points (58), has collected 46 points (15 goals, 31 assists) in 45 career encounters with Pittsburgh.

3. The next contest between the Penguins and Flyers will be held outdoors, as the teams will reconvene at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Feb. 23.

PREDICTION: Penguins 4, Flyers 2

Los Angeles Kings vs. Washington Capitals Preview and Predictions 2019-02-11

The Washington Capitals answered a disastrous seven-game losing skid (0-5-2) with a promising homestand, as the club has secured at least a point in four of its last five contests. Washington bids to conclude its six-game run at Capital One Arena in style on Monday when it hosts the Los Angeles Kings, who have secured a point in four straight contests (3-0-1) heading into the finale of their six-game trek.

Third-line forward Brett Connolly recorded his second three-point performance of his career with two goals and an assist in Saturday's 5-4 overtime loss versus Florida, but his hooking penalty in the offensive zone in the waning moments of regulation led to the Capitals' undoing. "To take a penalty at that time of the game - good call, bad call, whatever - that's one we can't take there and they made us pay for it," Capitals coach Todd Reirden told reporters. The Kings can relate as Ilya Kovalchuk's tripping penalty put his team on the defensive before Patrice Bergeron scored in overtime, although coach Willie Desjardins opted to take a positive spin on Saturday afternoon's 5-4 loss to Boston. "In the end it was a good point," Desjardins told reporters. "The guys battled back ... The thing I've liked about this group is that they don't give up and it was good to see them turn around and get a couple (goals in the third period) and end up with one point anyway."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE KINGS (23-27-5): Captain Anze Kopitar recorded his team-leading 17th goal on Saturday and has 10 (four goals, six assists) of his club-best 41 points in the last seven games. The 31-year-old Slovenian had an assist in Los Angeles' 3-1 win over Washington on March 8 and Jeff Carter, who is nursing a lower-body injury, scored and set up a goal in that contest. Jonathan Quick turned aside 52 of 55 shots to win both meetings last season with the Capitals, improving to 9-2-0 with a 2.23 goals-against average and .920 save percentage in his career versus the club.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (30-18-7): Connolly's line has been quite productive of late, with Andre Burakovsky notching two assists versus the Panthers to give him six points (two goals, four assists) in his last eight games while Lars Eller has four points (one goal, three assists) in his last seven. Of course, captain Alex Ovechkin is the key cog in the offense and the three-time Hart Trophy recipient has nine points (four goals, five assists) in his last six contests, although he was held off the scoresheet in both encounters with Los Angeles last season. Fellow Russian forward Evgeny Kuznetsov tallied twice in a 5-2 setback against the Kings on Nov. 30, 2017 and has 11 points (five goals, six assists) in his past seven games overall.

OVERTIME

1. Los Angeles RWs Adrian Kempe (four goals, two assists) and Tyler Toffoli (three goals, three assists) are riding four-game point streaks.

2. Capitals D John Carlson has 23 of his club-best 41 assists at home this season.

3. Kings RW Dustin Brown resides one point shy of 600 for his career.

PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Kings 1

San Jose Sharks vs. Vancouver Canucks Preview and Predictions 2019-02-11

San Jose Sharks forward Joe Thornton set up a pair of goals in his last encounter versus the Vancouver Canucks to move past Mario Lemieux on the NHL's all-time assists list. Thornton looks to elevate his name on that list once again as the 39-year-old finds himself tied with another Hall of Famer in Gordie Howe for ninth place as the Sharks conclude a four-game road trip against the Canucks on Monday.

Thornton set up the first and third goals in linemate Kevin Labanc's first career hat trick on Saturday as San Jose won its fifth straight and 12th in 15 outings with a 5-2 victory over Edmonton. Evander Kane scored his eighth goal in eight games and 13th since Jan. 1 while fellow forward Tomas Hertl matched his two-point performance versus the Oilers to give him 10 (six goals, four assists) in his past five contests. The Sharks reside one point behind Pacific Division-leading Calgary after Vancouver snapped a three-game skid with Saturday's 4-3 shootout win over the Flames. "Points are going to be hard to come by. We've got to battle hard for 65-plus minutes, and we did (Saturday)," said Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who turned aside 44 shots and thwarted all three attempts in the shootout.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBCS California (San Jose), Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE SHARKS (33-16-7): Labanc, who has four goals and two assists in his last four games overall, matched Thornton with two assists as San Jose improved to 10-0-1 in its last 11 meetings with Vancouver following a 4-0 romp on Nov. 23. "I think playing with Joe Thornton helps," coach Peter DeBoer told reporters of the 23-year-old Labanc. "You can never underestimate the importance of a guy like that with you and talking to you all the time." Defenseman Erik Karlsson, who scored a goal and set up two others in the first meeting with the Canucks, has been sidelined with an illness since the All-Star Game.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (25-24-7): Celebrated rookie Elias Pettersson had a pair of assists against the Flames before netting the winner in the shootout, giving him two tallies and three assists in five games since the All-Star break. The 20-year-old Swede, who leads the team in goals (25), assists (25) and points (50), is 10 points shy of the franchise rookie record shared by Pavel Bure and Ivan Hlinka. Brock Boeser has moved within earshot of Pettersson's team-leading totals, collecting five goals and five assists in his last 10 games to give him 19 of each.

OVERTIME

1. Markstrom owns a 2-4-1 mark with a 3.74 goals-against average and .882 save percentage in seven career encounters with San Jose.

2. Sharks captain F Joe Pavelski is one assist shy of 400 for his career.

3. The Canucks reached out to Utica of the American Hockey League and recalled C Zack MacEwen, who has 17 goals and 42 points with the Comets.

PREDICTION: Sharks 5, Canucks 3
