NHL – TRENDS OF THE DAY

Super Bowl Sunday isn’t just about football as there are three early afternoon games scheduled in the National Hockey League as well. This starts with a great Eastern Conference battle between the Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals. Also on tap is the Calgary Flames taking on the Carolina Hurricanes and the Edmonton Oilers battling the Montreal Canadiens.

Lines provided by BetDSI Sportsbook. Get the trends for all National Hockey League Games here.

Featured Game

Boston Bruins(+100) vs.Washington Capitals(-120)

The Boston Bruins enter this contest in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 61 points (21-17-7). They are 10-10-4 on the road this season and are 4-3-3 in their last 10 games. The Washington Capitals are in third place in the Metropolitan Division with 62 points (28-17-6). They are 14-8-4 at home this season and are 3-5-2 in their last 10 games.

Goaltending Matchup:

Tuukka Rask will be in net for the Bruins. He is 14-8-4 this season with a 2.45 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. Rask has lost his last two starts, despite giving up only four total goals in that span. His last loss was against the Philadelphia Flyers on January 31 when he gave up three goals on 41 shots.

The Capitals will start Braden Holtby. Holtby is 18-12-3 this season with a 3.10 goals against average and a .905 save percentage. Holtby snapped a personal five-game losing streak in his last start, giving up three goals on 30 shots in the victory over the Calgary Flames on February 1.

Hot Trends:

The Boston Bruins are…

1-5 in their last six games.
4-11 in their last 15 games on a Sunday.
7-3 in their last 10 against teams with a winning record.

The Washington Capitals are…

1-7 in their last eight games.
1-5 in their last six against teams with a winning record.
121-58 in their last 179 games at home.

Stat Pack:

Bruins:
Goals For:2.9
Goals Against:2.6
Power-Play:27.8%
Penalty Killing:79.2%

Capitals:
Goals For:3.4
Goals Against:3.2
Power-Play:21.9%
Penalty Killing:77.5%

Prediction

Washington has absolutely dominated Boston of late, winning seven straight against them and are 21-5 in the last 26 meetings. Both teams are slumping, but the fact that Washington is at home and they have dominated the Bruins, you have to go with the Capitals.

The total has moved from an original line of 5.5 to 6.0, and understandably so. These two teams have gone over in four of their last five games in Washington and three of the last four overall. Both have solid defenses and good goaltending, but that was the case in the other contests, and most of them went over. We see that here as well, as Washington wins 4-3.

Two Games to Watch

Edmonton Oilers (+150) vs. Montreal Canadiens (-170)

Both of these teams are coming off overtime loses on Saturday. Edmonton is in seventh place in the Pacific Division with 50 points (23-24-4). The Oilers are 11-11-3 on the road this season and are 4.5-1 in their last 10 games. Montreal has moved into third in the Atlantic Division with 62 points (28-18-6). They are 14-10-3 at home and are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.

Why Edmonton Wins:

Canadiens are 5-12 in their last 17 games when playing with no days off.
Oilers are 8-2 in last 10 meetings.
Oilers are 4-1 in last five meetings in Montreal.

Why Montreal Wins:

Canadiens are 5-1 in their last six games.
Canadiens are 11-4 in their last 15 games against teams with a losing record.
Oilers are 2-5 in their last seven games on a Sunday.
Oilers are 5-12 in their last 17 games.
Mikko Koskinen has lost three straight for Edmonton.
Carey Price has won four straight for Montreal, allowing four total goals in that span.

What About the Total?

Goover6.0, because…

Total has gone over in six of last seven meetings in Montreal.
Total has gone over in five of the last eight overall.
Edmonton has gone over in seven straight against teams with a winning record.

Calgary Flames (-115) vs. Carolina Hurricanes (-105)

The Calgary Flames lead the Pacific Division with 71 points (33-14-5). They are 16-10-0 on the road and are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. The Carolina Hurricanes are in fifth in the Metropolitan Division with 56 points (25-20-6). They are 14-8-4 at home and are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.

Why Calgary Wins:

Flames are 7-1 in their last eight games against teams with a losing record.
Flames are 8-2 in their last 10 games.
Hurricanes are 2-7 in their last nine games against teams with a winning percentage greater than .600.
Road team has won four of the last five games.
David Rittich has won eight of his last 10 starts.
Curtis McElhinney gave up six goals in his last start.

Why Carolina Wins:

Hurricanes are 6-1 in their last seven games at home.
Hurricanes are 10-4 in their last 14 games.
Hurricanes are 5-0 in their last five games on a Sunday.
McElhinney had won four straight before the loss.

What About the Total?

Go under 6.5, because…

Total has gone under in four straight games between these two teams.
Total has gone under in four of the last five in Carolina.
Rittich allowed two goals in each of his last two starts.
