NHL – TRENDS OF THE DAY

Sunday, January 19 will see 10 teams take to the ice in the National Hockey League including the Detroit Red Wings taking on the Vancouver Canucks. In other great action, the Washington Capitals take on the Chicago Blackhawks and the Arizona Coyotes battle the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Featured Game

Detroit Red Wings (+115) vs. Vancouver Canucks (-140)

Detroit is in last place in the Atlantic Division with 43 points (18-24-7). The Red Wings are 8-12-3 on the road this season and are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games. Vancouver is in fifth in the Pacific with 50 points (22-21-6). The Canucks are 11-9-3 at home this season and are 5-3-2 in their last 10 games.

Goaltending Matchup:

Jimmy Howard will start for Detroit. Howard is 13-13-5 this season with a 2.78 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage. The Red Wings goalie allowed five goals on 35 shots to the Calgary Flames in his last outing but had allowed three combined goals in his previous two starts, both of which were victories.

Vancouver will send Jacob Markstrom between the pipes. Markstrom is 18-12-5 this season with a 2.80 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. Vancouver goaltender has allowed three combined goals in his last two starts but has lost four of his last five starts.

Hot Trends:

The Detroit Red Wings are…

16-37 in their last 53 games on the road.
1-6 in their last seven games on a Sunday.
2-5 in their last seven games against teams with a losing record.

The Vancouver Canucks are…

4-0 in their last four games on a Sunday.
7-15 in their last 22 games at home when facing a team with a winning percentage on the road of less than .400.

Stat Pack:

Red Wings:
Goals For: 2.82
Goals Against: 3.31
Power-Play: 16.9%
Penalty Killing: 76.9%

Canucks:
Goals For: 2.88
Goals Against: 3.08
Power-Play: 17.2%
Penalty Killing: 78.6%

Prediction

The Red Wings are 4-1 in the last five meetings between these two teams, including going 4-1 in the last five meetings in Vancouver. In addition, the road team has won five of the last seven meetings.

Vancouver is playing slightly better, but the rest of the statistics equal out. Neither team has very good special teams units, both teams are averaging about the same number of goals per game while allowing about the same number of goals per game. Even the two goaltenders have pretty comparable statistics. Detroit has had the number of Vancouver of late, which is the one number that stands out.

The total for this game is set at 5.5. In the last five meetings between these two teams, the total has gone under in four of those games and has gone under in four of the last six in Vancouver. With the exception of his last start, Howard has looked good in net as has Markstrom. We see a low-scoring affair so take the under as Detroit wins 3-2.

Two Games to Watch

Washington enters this contest in second in the Metropolitan Division with 59 points (27-15-5). They are 13-8-3 on the road this season and are 3-5-2 in their last 10 games. Chicago is in the last place in the Central Division with 41 points (16-24-9). The Blackhawks are 8-10-6 at home this season and are 3-4-3 in their last 10 games.

Why Washington Wins:

Capitals are 11-4 in their last 15 games on the road.
Capitals are 5-2 in their last seven games against teams with a losing record.
Blackhawks have lost four straight at home.
Braden Holtby has given up two goals or less in four straight games.
Collin Delia has lost five straight games.
Capitals are 8-2 in last 10 meetings.

Why Chicago Wins:

Capitals have lost four straight.
Capitals have lost five straight games against Western Conference teams.
Home team has won 13 of the last 16 meetings.

What About the Total?

Go over 6.5, because…

None of the last six meetings between these two teams have gone under.
Only one of the last seven meetings in Chicago has gone under.
Chicago has gone over in five of their last six at home.
Washington has gone over in six of their last nine against Western Conference teams.
Delia has given up three goals or more in five of his last six starts.

Arizona Coyotes (+220) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs(-230)

Arizona is in seventh place in the Pacific Division with 46 points (21-22-4). The Coyotes are 12-10-1 on the road this season and are 5-3-2 in their last 10 games. Toronto is in second place in the Atlantic Division with 60 points (29-16-2). They are 13-10-1 at home this season and are 4-6-0 in their last 10 games.

Why Arizona Wins:

Coyotes are 4-1 in their last five games on the road against teams with a winning record at home.
Maple Leafs are 1-5 in their last six games at home.
Coyotes are 12-4 in the last 16 meetings.

Maple Leafs are 4-1 in their last five games on a Sunday.
Coyotes are 39-84 in their last 123 games on the road.
Frederik Andersen allowed two goals on 38 shots in his last start.

What About the Total?

Go under 6.0, because…

Arizona has gone under in six straight against teams from the Eastern Conference.
Toronto has gone under in six of their last seven games.
