MORNING LINE REPORT

It’s always nice to get that early afternoon win under your belt to start the day as we picked up a nice win with the Rangers to begin Saturday. Unfortunately, some ugly puck luck reared its head in the evening which saw Cory Schneider steal a win for the Devils against our Panthers play and a real heartbreaker as Carolina looked in complete control with a 3-1 lead in the third before falling 4-3 in overtime to the Hawks. The Jets were a comfortable winner to close out a 2-2 day in what has become a slow bleed of tough results this month. I wasn’t comfortable with any of the other lines that opened late yesterday and decided to pass on everything else which turned out to be a good thing.

Several teams are on the tail end of a back-to-back tonight so we don’t currently have any open lines to exploit but most goaltenders are either confirmed or strongly assumed so we should be able to fire on a couple of games when lines open without needing to wait around for coaching confirmations.

Let’s take a look at the nice little four game card for Sunday and see how we’ll approach things.

EDMONTON OILERS @ WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Projected Goaltenders
Edmonton – Cam Talbot/Laurent Brossoit (unknown)
Washington – Braden Holtby (expected)

Injury Report
Edmonton – Sekera (out), Slepyshev (out), Caggiula (doubtful)
Washington – Burakovsky (out), Niskanen (out), Connolly (likely)

The Edmonton Oilers league-worst penalty kill reared its ugly head again yesterday as a pair of Rangers powerplay goals in the second period quickly turned a 2-1 lead into a 3-2 deficit. The Oilers played a pretty good road game outside of that and they’ll wrap up their four game trip with surprisingly just their first back-to-back of the season tonight. One would think Laurent Brossoit would get the start here but he’s started just once all season and McLellan wouldn’t commit to naming a starter. With the Oilers desperate to grab points it wouldn’t surprise me to see Talbot back in the net but the Oilers can’t continue riding him into the ground all season. Talbot has one-year old twins at home, as well, so he’s probably not getting much rest outside the rink either.

Braden Holtby became the second fastest goaltender in NHL history to reach 200 wins with Friday’s 4-1 win over visiting Pittsburgh. Only the legendary Ken Dryden accomplished the feat faster and only by eight games. The Capitals were solid in all areas against the Pens and have now won four of their last five games.

The Caps should have another healthy body back in the lineup today as Brett Connolly is expected to return after missing seven games with a concussion. Matt Niskanen wore a regular jersey in Saturday’s practice for the first time but only participated in a light skate and will miss his 13th consecutive game.

We’re 4-1 fading the Oilers now after yesterday’s result and 8-3 on Washington games so this sets up as a potentially nice play as I’m expecting to see some value on the Caps and will be looking to lock a play in early. Stay tuned to my social media for an update.

NEW JERSEY DEVILS @ CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

Projected Goaltenders
New Jersey – Keith Kinkaid (confirmed)
Chicago – Corey Crawford (confirmed)

Injury Report
New Jersey – Zajac (out), Johansson (out)
Chicago – Hossa (out)

New Jersey snapped a four game winless streak with a 2-1 victory over Florida last night and now embark on a four game road trip. Cory Schneider was brilliant once again as the Panthers were all over the Devils in the third period, outshooting New Jersey 17-4 but Schneider closed the door.

The Devils number one center Travis Zajac is well ahead of schedule for a return. Zajac has been medically cleared to practice and play but did not travel with the team for today’s game. New Jersey will return home after tonight as they don’t play again until Thursday in Toronto and it’s expected he’ll travel with the team at that time. When Zajac returns he’ll slot back in on the top line between Hall and Palmieri which will allow Nico Hischier to slide down the second line. Hischier has done a good job on the top line but he should be more effective in his new role.

The Chicago Blackhawks were dominated for long stretches last night and Anton Forsberg was shaky in net but a huge third period effort saw them erase a 3-1 deficit and a Brandon Saad goal in overtime completed the comeback for a 4-3 win. I mentioned yesterday how the Blackhawks were experiencing some poor luck in the goal scoring department as they were still getting tons of scoring chances. That continued last night as the chances were there early but they couldn’t convert. Unfortunately for our Carolina moneyline ticket, their luck finally turned over the final 25 minutes and the floodgates opened a bit. It might just continue into tonight against a Devils team who have had their troubles defensively recently.

The Hawks are feeling really good after last night and should have some extra pep in their step to begin this one so we’ll jump on Chicago here if we get some value but it’s likely to be close.

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING @ ANAHEIM DUCKS

Projected Goaltenders
Tampa Bay – Andrei Vasilevskiy (likely)
Anaheim – John Gibson (likely)

Injury Report
Tampa Bay – no significant injuries
Anaheim – Kesler (out), Eaves (out), Getzlaf (out), Kase (out), Fowler (out)

East Coast teams usually have a tough time on the three game trip through California but the Tampa Bay Lightning are slicing through the competition with relative ease. After dominating the Sharks 5-1 on Wednesday they turned around and blitzed the Kings with four first period goals on Thursday.

Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos continue to terrorize the league as they have a healthy lead in the NHL scoring race with Stamkos leading the way with 30 points (8 goals and a league leading 22 assists) and Kucherov a comfortable second with 29 points (a league leading 16 goals with 13 assists). Sitting a distant third is Blake Wheeler of the Jets with 23 points.

The wounded Anaheim Ducks continue to scratch and claw for anything they can get as points have been hard to come by in November. The Ducks snapped a four game winless streak with Thursday’s solid 4-1 win over Vancouver. With several key players still out the scoring load has fallen on Rickard Rakell who has been moved back to the wing. He picked up three assists against the Canucks and has points in four straight to lead the Ducks with 14 points.

Jakob Silfverberg also finally got going on Thursday with a two goal outburst in 35 seconds to double his season total to four. The Ducks need him to continue to produce in order to create some balance in the offense.

Anaheim’s injuries have carried over onto their goaltenders this past week as Ryan Miller was injured in Thursday’s game and won’t be available tonight. John Gibson missed Thursday’s game due to injury but returned to practice on Saturday and should be good to go. Reto Berra will backup if Gibson is ready.

The Lightning will be looking for the rare California sweep and also a bit of revenge as one of their only two regulation losses this year came at the hands of the Ducks in October. We might see a tiny bit of value on the Lightning today when this line opens but it should be close so we’ll look to jump in early if possible.

SAN JOSE SHARKS @ LOS ANGELES KINGS

Projected Goaltenders
San Jose – Martin Jones (expected)
Los Angeles – Jonathan Quick (likely)

Injury Report
San Jose – Martin (out), Meier (questionable)
Los Angeles – Gaborik (out), Carter (out), Clifford (out)

San Jose closed out a 4-1-0 homestand with a 5-0 win over Vancouver last night in what DeBoer called an ugly win. The final score was padded at the end thanks to two empty net goals and a penalty shot goal with just 12 seconds left. The Sharks were badly outplayed all night but Aaron Dell was outstanding making 41 saves for the shutout. Martin Jones is expected to be back in net today.

Timo Meier is awaiting a call from the NHL Department of Player Safety this morning as he was ejected from the game late in the third period after jabbing Michael Del Zotto in the chin with the butt of his stick. The Sharks called up Kevin Labanc in anticipation of a suspension to Meier.

Los Angeles is coming off a 5-2 thumping by Tampa Bay in a game that was over quickly. The Lightning scored four goals in a 2:02 span of the first period and never looked bad. The Kings allowed their most scoring chances against all season. Poor puck management and costly turnovers were the culprit and has been a common theme with the Kings despite the great record.

Marian Gaborik skated for the first time in six weeks and practiced with the team for the first time this season on Saturday. Don’t expect the 35-year old winger to be activated anytime soon but it was a big step in his recovery to come back from a knee procedure in April. Kyle Clifford is making progress in his recovery from an upper-body injury but has not resumed skating yet.

This will be the seventh game already this season where the rested Kings will play a team coming in on a back-to-back. The Kings are 4-1-1 in this situation so this will be a tough spot for the Sharks. Any line value we’ll have here is likely to be on San Jose or nothing. I’d be okay playing them so we’ll see where the number opens and go from there.
