Ravens waive Jamal Lewis

Owings Mills, MD (Sports Network) - The Baltimore Ravens waived running back Jamal Lewis Wednesday, but it appears the team wants to re-sign its all-time leading rusher.

"We are involved in negotiations with Jamal Lewis, and there has been good dialogue," said Ravens general manager and executive vice president Ozzie Newsome. "Jamal has been a significant contributor to us in the last seven seasons. It's our hope to have him back with the Ravens."

Lewis has rushed for 7,801 yards with the Ravens, who made him their No. 1 draft pick (fifth overall) in 2000. Lewis was the 2003 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, when he rushed for 2,066 yards, the second most in NFL history.

Last year, he rushed for 1,132 yards and scored nine touchdowns, his best season since his career-season in 2003.

Lewis signed a three-year deal with Baltimore prior to the start of last season.
