Bad call with Sunday’s complimentary play on the Vikings, who never had a shot to cover the big number against the Broncos and actually were damn lucky to escape with a win. For Monday’s freebie, we’ll head back to the NBA and lay the short price with the Suns against the visiting Celtics.
If you’ve been riding the D-Train since I joined this site, you know I’m 3-for-3 with NBA free plays, and all three selections involved these two teams (two winners on Boston, one on Phoenix). So you could say I’ve got a pretty good handle on these squads. As for why I like the Suns tonight, it’s mostly about the situation.
Boston had its NBA-best 10-game winning streak halted in Sacramento on Sunday, falling 100-99 to the Kings as a 3-point favorite. That marked the second game of a West Coast road trip that will see the Celtics play five games in eight days. Tonight in Phoenix, the Celtics will be playing for the third time in four nights and it’s their first back-to-back of the season. Translation: You’re probably going to see one or two of Boston’s starters as healthy scratches, and those who do play will be running on fumes, especially after a down-to-the-wire nail-biter in Sacramento last night.
While the Celtics will be playing their third game since Friday, the Suns will be playing their first game since Thursday’s 128-112 rout of the Hawks. By easily cashing as an 8-point favorite against Atlanta (I gave that to you as a freebie), Phoenix improved to 9-2 ATS this season. Now check this out: All seven of the Suns’ SU victories have been by more than three points, and their average victory margin is 14.9 points!
I don’t know that Devin Booker and Co. will hit that average tonight, but you give me one extremely rested home team as a short favorite against a gassed opponent in the midst of a five-game road trip, and I’ll take it.

Monday night in the NBA, play on the Charlotte Hornets plus the points as they take on the Toronto Raptors.
Toronto is back home after a 5 game road trip that saw them go 3-2 straight up, but the Raptors lost some steam by the end of the excursion as they lost at Dallas on Saturday to come back home with losses in 2 of their last 3.
Charlotte meanwhile, has a little something cooking at they head into Canada with wins and covers in their last pair of games. Those back-to-back wins on Friday and Saturday have the Hornets just a game under .500 at 6-7 for the season.
While Toronto has yet to lose at home this season - 4-0 straight up and 3-1 against the spread - they have had some problems in recent meetings with Charlotte, as the Hornets did win and cover last year's final 2 season series meetings and have covered in 3 of the last 4 overall against the Raptors.
Kemba Walker may be gone, but head coach James Borrego has found a nice mix with Devonte' Graham currently leading the club with 18 points per game for a Charlotte team that averages 106.7 points per game for the season. This Charlotte team has played well on the road with a 3-3 straight up mark and they have covered in 5 of their 6 on the highway thus far this season, including each of their last 5 on the road.
Toronto comes into Monday's game with a 111.8 points per game average, but after those 5 games away from home, look for the Raptors to be a little sluggish as they get back to the comforts of being at home.
The points are just enough for me to back the Hornets to keep things tight tonight in Toronto.

The Cavaliers (4-8) and Knicks (3-10) have just seven wins between them. Tonight, these two clubs will face off in New York.
Cleveland has recently gone up against a tough schedule, losing to Philadelphia twice and Miami once to drop three in a row. Prior to that losing streak, the Cavaliers handled the Knicks with ease in a 108-87 game played in New York. That victory earned Cleveland one of their two away wins.
On average, the Cavaliers are scoring 104.4 points while allowing 107.7 points per game.
Although Cleveland doesn’t have a player putting up at least 20 points a game, they have a decent duo in Collin Sexton and Kevin Love. Sexton is scoring 18.3 points per contest and Love is averaging 18.2 points and 12.1 rebounds per game.
The Knicks have lost three of their last four, including that 108-87 defeat to Cleveland just over a week ago. Although the Knicks will be at home, New York has won just two out of their six games in Madison Square Garden.
On average, the Knicks are scoring 100.2 points while allowing 109.2 points per game.
New York hasn’t scored more than 111 points all season, and has failed to top more than 106 point in any contest since their first two of the year.
