Florida Atlantic Owls vs. Central Florida Knights Preview and Predictions 09-21-2018 in NCAAF
NCAAF Previews 18th September 2018 by Gracenote
Scheduled Bright House Networks Stadium Orlando

No. 18 Central Florida was forced into an unscheduled week off due to Hurricane Florence and must rev up the engines again when it hosts Florida Atlantic on Friday night in a non-conference contest. The Knights rolled to two straight victories while scoring 94 points, extending their national-best winning streak to 15 games, before having last Saturday's game at North Carolina canceled.

"It's tough because of when you find out the information," UCF coach Josh Heupel told reporters. "You have to fast forward and move on to the next week's prep. It gave some of the guys that maybe have had a few nicks a few more days to get healthy. That's the biggest advantage is that guys get a couple more days to rebound and get ready." Junior quarterback McKenzie Milton had to wait another week to wash away the effects of an uncharacteristic three-interception performance for the Knights in the 38-0 victory over South Carolina State on Sept. 8, but UCF's defense has been solid with 17 points allowed in two games. The Knights' defense will be challenged by a Florida Atlantic offense that has posted 82 points in two straight victories and averages 469.3 yards. Coach Lane Kiffin's Owls were routed by fifth-ranked Oklahoma in the season opener before defeating Air Force (33-27) and Bethune Cookman (49-28) at home the last two weekends.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Central Florida -13.5

ABOUT FLORIDA ATLANTIC (2-1): Freshman quarterback Chris Robison has thrown for 799 yards - 471 against Air Force - and completed 68.8 percent of his passes in the first three games of his collegiate career. Four of the Owls' receivers have gained at least 100 yards with junior wide receivers Jovon Durante (23 catches, 298 yards, two touchdowns) and Tavaris Harrison (11, 195) leading the way. Devin Singletary, who has scored 51 career TDs and registered 3,151 yards on the ground, leads the rushing attack for FAU and fellow junior Kerrith Whyte Jr. gained 100 of his 116 yards against Bethune Cookman last week.

ABOUT CENTRAL FLORIDA (2-0): After Milton threw for five touchdowns in the season-opening rout of Connecticut, he totaled 243 yards through the air with one score and three interceptions to damage his Heisman Trophy bid last time out. Tre Nixon leads a talented receiving corps with eight catches for 154 yards while fellow sophomore Gabriel Davis has hauled in 15 for 151 yards and junior Dredrick Snelson owns 11 receptions for 135. The Knights have allowed 397 yards rushing in two games with four sacks and four interceptions (two from sophomore Richie Grant) while senior linebacker Pat Jasinski leads the way with 19 tackles.

EXTRA POINTS

1. UCF junior RB Adrian Killins Jr. is averaging 7.5 yards per carry and has scored three times in the first two games.

2. Florida Atlantic junior LB Rashad Smith leads the team with 28 tackles and two interceptions.

3. The Knights, who have won nine straight games at home, won the only previous meeting 33-29 in 2003.

PREDICTION: Central Florida 45, Florida Atlantic 21

Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Illinois Fighting Illini Preview and Predictions 09-21-2018 in NCAAF
NCAAF Previews 18th September 2018 by Gracenote
Scheduled Memorial Stadium Champaign

Penn State will try to build off back-to-back runaway wins when it travels to Illinois for a rare Friday night Big Ten opener. Senior quarterback Trace McSorley accounted for five touchdowns - three on the ground - as the ninth-ranked Nittany Lions rolled to a 63-10 win over Kent State on Saturday.

They've outscored their last two opponents by a 114-16 margin after struggling to win the opener against Appalachian State, and must avoid looking too far ahead with a much-anticipated primetime matchup with No. 4 Ohio State the following weekend. The Illini also defeated Kent State but they needed a second-half comeback to survive 31-24, and Lovie Smith's team lost a 12-point fourth-quarter lead in a 25-19 loss to South Florida on Saturday. "You don't like the way we as a team finished," Smith told reporters said at his Monday press conference. "We all had an opportunity to do something. It doesn't ever really come down to one play. 2-1, we lead at the first quarter (of the season). Now, it's about Big Ten play." Penn State and Illinois have not met since the 2015, when the Nittany Lions coasted to a 39-0 win at home.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Penn State -28.5

ABOUT PENN STATE (3-0): McSorley is not disappointing in what many in Happy Valley thought could be a Heisman Trophy-worthy season, but he is doing much more with his legs, averaging a career-high 5.5 yards per carry with six TDs while completing just 51.7 percent of his passes. Four of his 11 completions and 101 of his 229 yards last Saturday went to senior DeAndre Thompkins, who was expected to be a trustworthy target but had failed to make a catch through the first two games. The Lions top all Big Ten teams with 13 sacks and defensive end Shareef Miller leads the way with three - two against Kent State.

ABOUT ILLINOIS (2-1): True freshman M.J. Rivers II took over at quarterback in the second quarter of the second game after starter AJ Bush Jr. was hurt, and the former has completed 64.4 percent of his passes with a pair of TDs and no interceptions. Wideouts Ricky Smalling and Sam Mays have been the top targets, combining for 16 catches and 212 yards, but the Illini are relying heavily on a rushing attack that enters the weekend ranked 20th among FBS teams with 243 yards per game. Sophomore Mike Epstein has consecutive 100-yard efforts and is averaging 7.2 yards per carry.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Nittany Lions' last regular-season game on a Friday came in 1982, when it defeated fifth-ranked Pittsburgh on the day after Thanksgiving en route to a national title.

2. McSorley needs 28 yards to become the second passer in program history with 8,000 (Christian Hackenberg 8,457).

3. Illinois kicked a field goal in the closing seconds to defeat Penn State 16-14 in the last matchup at Champaign in 2014.

PREDICTION: Penn State 38, Illinois 16

Washington State Cougars vs. Southern California Trojans Preview and Predictions 09-21-2018 in NCAAF
NCAAF Previews 18th September 2018 by Gracenote

USC coach Clay Helton won a Rose Bowl and a Pac-12 championship in his first two full seasons as head coach. But Helton already finds himself on the hot seat after an ugly 1-2 start to the 2018 season heading in Friday night's home game with undefeated Washington State.

The Trojans, who opened the season with a less than impressive 43-21 victory over perennial Mountain West doormat UNLV, come in off back-to-back road losses at Stanford (17-3) and Texas (37-14) that has some USC supporters demanding that Helton and/or athletic director Lynn Swann be fired. For his part, Helton, who has been in this spot before -- the Trojans were 3-2 in 2015 when Helton took for over for Steve Sarkisian and eventually won the Pac-12 South with an 8-4 record and then started 1-3 in 2016 en route to a 10-3 finish and a 52-49 Rose Bowl win over Penn State -- and seems to relish the challenge of turning around a season that features a talented but true freshman at quarterback in JT Daniels and a number of key injuries or suspensions on the offensive line and in the secondary. "I don't want (people to) mistake being upbeat (for saying) that I don't care, a concern and an effort level to make sure our seniors are ... Pac-12 champions again," Helton told the Los Angeles Times. "When times are tough, you get to see exactly who you are and if you have the availability to lead. I love being a leader." Meanwhile, Washington State, which has won two of the last three meetings with the Trojans, has cruised to easy wins over Wyoming (41-19), San Jose State (31-0) and FCS opponent Eastern Washington (59-24) heading into its Pac-12 opener.

TV: 10:30 ET, ESPN. LINE: USC -3.5

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE (3-0, 0-0 Pac-12): Despite the graduation of Pac-12 record-setting quarterback Luke Falk, the Cougars haven't missed a beat yet offensively with East Carolina grad transfer Gardner Minshew II earning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors after throwing for a career-high 470 yards on 45-of-57 passing and two touchdowns and no interceptions in the win over Eastern Washington. "I think he's done a good job," Cougars coach Mike Leach said of Minshew making the transition to WSU's Air Raid offense so quickly. "I think the biggest thing was a little bit schematically, but just getting used to the players around him because we have a very young receiving corps." One of those receivers, sophomore Travell Harris, was named conference Special Teams Player of the Week after returning a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and leads the Pac-12 with a 37-yard average on kickoff returns.

ABOUT USC (1-2, 0-1): Daniels, the reigning national prep player of the year by Gatorade and Max Preps after leading Mater Dei High School of Santa Ana, Calif., to the mythical national title, has completed 67-of-117 passes for 819 yards and just one TD while being intercepted three times. He hasn't received much help from an anemic Trojan running game which ranks 116th nationally averaging only 109.3 yards per game and 3.6 yards per attempt and is coming in off a Texas loss that saw them finish with minus-five yards rushing on 16 attempts. The defense will be missing star DE/LB Porter Gustin, who had two sacks at Texas, for the first half after a targeting penalty in the second half against the Longhorns and two starters at safety in Bubba Bolden (suspended) and Isaiah Pola-Mao (dislocated shoulder).

EXTRA POINTS

1. USC has a 17-game winning streak at the Los Angeles Coliseum, including 12 in a row over Pac-12 opponents, dating back to a 17-12 loss to Washington on Oct. 8, 2015, Sarkisian's final game as head coach.

2. Washington State RB James Williams rushed for three touchdowns in the win over Eastern Washington, the first Cougar to do that since Carl Winston in 2012 against Washington.

3. Trojans sophomore PK Chase McGrath, who has connected on 18-of-25 field goals and 58-of-59 PATs in his career, tore an ACL in the Texas loss and will miss the rest of the season.

PREDICTION: USC 20, Washington State 17
