N. CAROLINA @ DUKE | 04/02 | 8:49 PM EDT DUKE -200 ANALYSIS: I think the oddsmakers got both Final Four games pretty much spot-on with the spread, so I have no interest in them ATS. But I'll likely play the two together on the moneyline. Things are just setting up too perfectly for Coach K to go out on top. Can't believe this is the first-ever NCAA Tournament matchup between the schools. They've only been in the Final Four together one other time, in 1991, when Mike Krzyzewski won his first championship. While the Heels' Armando Bacot has been unstoppable in the Big Dance, Duke has the size to help control him. VILLANOVA @ KANSAS | 04/02 | 6:09 PM EDT KANSAS -191 ANALYSIS: I expect this number to only go up when the casual fan realizes how important Justin Moore was to Villanova -- the junior guard averages 14.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, but his season is over due to injury suffered in the Elite Eight. Coach Jay Wright usually only plays six guys as it is, so I'd imagine the much deeper Jayhawks can wear Nova down. +1939 215-137-3 IN LAST 355 CBB PICKS __________________ Micah Roberts N. CAROLINA @ DUKE | 04/02 | 8:49 PM EDT OVER 151 ANALYSIS: The last six meetings between Duke and North Carolina have gone Over, and the trend should continue Saturday. Both teams prefer a fast pace, and this number offers about six points of value. Both previous meetings this season had higher posted totals. The Over is 21-15-1 in North Carolina games this season and 21-16-1 in Duke games. The Tar Heels are averaging 78.1 points a game, while the Blue Devils are averaging 80.1. I think the Over is the best bet in this game. N. CAROLINA @ DUKE | 04/02 | 8:49 PM EDT N. CAROLINA +4 ANALYSIS: Both these teams have won four straight since losing to Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament. North Carolina covered all four, while Duke was 3-1 ATS. These teams split during the regular season, winning on each other's home court. The Blue Devils won 87-67 in Chapel Hill, while the Tar Heels won 94-81 in Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s last home game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Both of those wins were aided by a substantial edge by the winner in free throw attempts. Carolina has won 16 of its last 19 games. I took the points with the Heels. VILLANOVA @ KANSAS | 04/02 | 6:09 PM EDT VILLANOVA +4.5 ANALYSIS: If Villanova’s Justin Moore didn’t tear his Achilles in the regional final, this spread would be a Villanova -1 or pick ‘em. At least that’s my opinion based on Villanova winning its last nine and covering all four NCAA Tournament games. Villanova has played the tournament smartly with the coaching factor playing a major role. The Wildcats also have hit key free throws and are an astounding 82.5 percent for the season. Coach Jay Wright’s squad executes the gameplan every night and the Wildcats appear to be improving with every game. The loss of Moore is creating line value on the underdog. Let’s take the points. +1932 52-29 IN LAST 81 CBB PICKS __________________ Larry Hartstein N. CAROLINA @ DUKE | 04/02 | 8:49 PM EDT DUKE -4 ANALYSIS: On the Early Edge this week, I made the case for UNC to go over its team total of 73.5 and for the game to sail Over, despite the high total. After further research, I'm adding the Blue Devils (at no more than -4) and looking for an 84-77 type of game. While the Tar Heels' defense has improved, they're facing an offensive machine that averaged 1.14 points per possession versus far superior defenses in Texas Tech and Arkansas. Duke shoots 37 percent from deep, best among the remaining teams, and has nailed 38.1 percent on 3-point tries the past three games. Lay the points as the Blue Devils cover in a fast-paced, high-scoring affair. +1721 92-68-3 IN LAST 163 CBB ATS PICKS __________________ Matt Severance MINNESOTA @ CAROLINA | 04/02 | 7:00 PM EDT MINNESOTA +1.5 ANALYSIS: Saturday game. Carolina is excellent, but we are getting a decent day-before price on the Wild puckline (-160 as of now that probably only goes up), and Minnesota is quite good itself. Jesperi Kotkaniemi (26 points) remains out for the Canes. Should be Marc-Andre Fleury in net for Minnesota, and he has been energized by the trade from Chicago, going 2-0 with only three goals allowed in a Wild uniform. TORONTO @ PHILADELPHIA | 04/02 | 7:00 PM EDT PHILADELPHIA +1.5 ANALYSIS: Going to jump this one early as we get the Flyers at -110 on the puckline. The Leafs are of course the much better team but also starting Jack Campbell in net -- he has been out since March 8 due to injury and had been horrible in five straight outings before being shut down. A couple of other regulars are out injured. The Flyers have lost three straight but those were all away. Their past two home games: Upsets of the Islanders and Predators. Philly can at worst stay within a goal Saturday. Been so enjoying these home dogs on the PL getting games to OT and then just shutting my phone off. +1581 21-4 IN LAST 25 NHL ATS PICKS __________________ AccuScore Picks 4* Villanova +4.5 4* North Carolina vs. Duke Over 151 4* Hornets +5 3* Hornets vs. 76ers Over 228 4* Cavaliers +1 4* Hawks +2 4* Nets vs. Hawks Over 241.5 __________________ Big Al Slapshot club Flames __________________ VSiN Hosts & Guests COLLEGE BASKETBALL Villanova vs. Kansas (4/2, 6:09 p.m. ET) Mitch Moss: Kansas -4 Tim Murray: Under 133 Matt Youmans: Under 133 Jonathan Von Tobel: Under 133 Harry Gagnon: Kansas -4.5 Dalen Cuff: Kansas -4 Kenny White: Under 61.5 1H Brad Evans: Under 133 North Carolina vs. Duke (4/2, 8:49 p.m.) Josh Appelbaum: Under 151 Adam Hill: 1H Under 71.5 Jim Root: Duke -4 Youmans: Duke ML (-185) Gagnon: Duke -4; Over 151 Greg Peterson: Under 151 Dr. Bob: UNC +4 (1/2 unit) Evans: Over 151 FUTURES & PROPS Pauly Howard Will No. 1 Seed Win Title: NO (-130) Mike Palm Duke to win National Championship (+500) 3 Units __________________ BOB BALFE: College Basketball 6;09 PM EST Rotation #701 Villanova +4 over Kansas Both teams were built for winning, and their coaches are future hall of fame inductees. This tournament is all about coaching and quality defense. Villanova might be short-handed, but they play defense very well and are not shy to shoot the three-point shot. I feel like teams with more aggressive shooting threes tend to do better. Both Bill Self and Jay Wright are more than capable of playing in the finals. I do think this spread is a little high. Take Villanova. College Basketball 8:49 PM EST Rotation #704 Duke -4 over UNC Coach K is on a magical run, and he might end his career with another title. UNC Head Coach Hubert Davis is in his first year as coach. I do believe you have to crawl before you walk in this tournament. UNC still has a few Roy Williams recruited players that can score the basketball, but Duke has a considerable coaching edge. Coach K will be able to break down any weaknesses from the previous two matchups and fix any errors. Duke is playing well at the rim, is sharing the ball well, and can shoot three-pointers. Monday will be a day for the history books if the Blue Devils can advance. Take Duke. __________________ |
