Your comp play for Saturday will be to take the points and Villanova as the # 6 seed (and defending champ!) will take on the # 3 seed in the South Region, the Purdue Boilermakers from the XL Center in Hartford tonight.

Both teams showed resolve in their opening round victories, as the Wildcats held off a game St. Mary's edition, 61-57, while the Boilermakers were 13 point winners over Old Dominion.

I have a feeling this game is going to go back-and-forth and could well be decided by who has the basketball last. Since Villanova is getting +4 points (as I type my analysis) I think the points will work in this spot.

Carsen Edwards did indeed lead the Boilers on Thursday with 26 points, but he put up 23 shots and connected on only 7 of them! That has Edwards at 24-for-89 over Purdue's last 4 games. Edwards has had back issues that obviously could have him altering his shot, and he could well be fatigued too. Whatever the issue, I don't wish to be laying points against this capable 'Nova team.

Villanova continues to got solid senior leadership from Phil Booth who netted 20 points, and Eric Paschall who chipped in with another 14 points. The victory put the 'Cats at 14-1 straight up in the Big Dance since 2016. In other words, Jay Wright's team is not going to be an "easy out" for this Purdue team tonight.

As I look over the numbers for this game, there is just not a whole heck of a lot to separate these teams from one another, as Villanova averages 74.1 points per game, while Purdue scores the rock at 75.7 points per contest. On the defensive end, the Wildcats allow 66.8 to the Boilemakers 66.2 points allowed. Rebounds? 34 for Purdue per game to Villanova's 32.4 per contest. As far as free-throws go, both teams are right near 73%. Three-point percentage is also about the same at 36%, as is
field-goal percentage at 44% from the floor!!!

Again, this one should be tight for the full 40 minutes. I am backing the dog 'Cats in this second round plus the points to stay inside of the number.

Our complimentary selection for Saturday, March 23 is:

Celtics vs. Hornets
Celtics-3½

The Charlotte Hornets picked up a 113-106 home win over Minnesota Thursday night. They had however lost two straight and four of their previous five prior to that victory and I think they'll come up short here against the Boston Celtics Saturday night.

The Celtics have a playoff spot locked in but are battling Indiana for the No. 4 seed and homecourt advantage in the first round. "We don't want to look past these 10 games," said guard Terry Rozier, "but we're obviously getting prepared for the playoffs. Some guys may rest, but we got to get in that mindset right now. Once the playoffs are here, it's like, there are no taking steps back. We got to be ready from out the gate; fresh out the gate." Very sensible stance from the Celtics, but I think they'll want to put up a good performance tonight following back-to-back losses to Denver and Philadelphia.

The Hornets enter Saturday 2 1/2 games behind Miami for the final playoff spot but would have to leapfrog not just Miami, but also Orlando to get into the playoff picture.

The Celtics are 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings in Charlotte and the Hornets are just 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight home games.

Free pick on the Boston Celtics.

Saturday card has 4 big NCAAB Tournament Plays including the 2019 Tournament Total Of The year and in NBA we have a 38-0 Statistical indicator and AAF Play. NBA Comp play below The NBA Comp play is on Boston at 6:15 eastern. The Celtics have covered 6 of 7 here in Charlotte and the favorite in the series has covered 4 of 5. The Celtics have covered in 3 of 4 on the road, Charlotte has lost to the spread in 6 of 7 at home and the last 6 times playing off a win. The Hornets have failed to cover 36 of 50 vs Atlantic division teams. The Celtics also fit a solid 87% system that plays on rested road favorites that scored and allowed 110 or more as a road dog and are now taking on a team that scored 110 or more in a home favored win and cover. Look for Boston to take this one.

Murray State at Florida State 6:10 ET

Seminoles (-) over Racers

Florida State has shown their grit making it to the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on to be denied by Duke. We are all aware of Zion Williamson and his status among those at the next level but there is another player on the court and not with Duke that has the pro's drooling. He is of course Ja Morant who many now think should be the No. 1 pick...hold your horses boys. Morant turned in a Triple-double against flawed Marquette as he scored or assisted on 53 of the Racers 83 points. Murray State enters with 12 straight wins but are up against the winningest (28) team in Florida State history. The size, balance and depth of the Seminoles will be the difference. Take FLORIDA STATE!

LSU-2

This line reeks a bit. LSU has won six of their last seven with the loss coming by three to Florida. They got a nice win against Yale and have the more athletic team of the two. This team is very nicely efficient on offense and has some size to counteract what the Terps do inside. Maryland is so young and really I didn't expect them to beat Belmont. I entered this tournament wanting to fade Maryland whenever I could and fortunately I get another chance. They've lost three of their last five. I think the line is a trap, but I'll take it anyways.

Villanova vs. Purdue
UNDER 138½

The books have completely missed the mark in this one. While these are two very sound offensive teams with some legit offensive star-power, both teams like to play at a very slow pace, which limits the number of possessions. You also have two teams that take pretty good care of the basketball, so there figures to be fewer easy baskets in the open court.

Both teams played in very low-scoring games in the first round. Villanova beat St. Mary's 61-57 for a combined 118 points. Purdue also scored 61 in a 61-48 win against Old Dominion for a total of 109. This total is basically saying both teams will score into the 70s and I just don't see that happening.

UNDER has gone 14-4 in Villanova's last 18 games when playing against a quality opponent that is outscoring opponents by 4+ ppg. UNDER has also gone 7-3 in the Wildcats last 10 games played on a neutral court and 12-3-1 last 16 out of conference. Take the UNDER!

Murray State vs. Florida State

10* FREE NCAAB PICK (Florida State -4.5)

I'll take my chances here with the Seminoles as a small favorite against the Racers. No question that Murray State has a special talent in Morant, but I think the line here is a big time over reaction to what we saw on Thursday. Florida State had their hands full against Vermont, while the Racers pulled off the upset against Marquette. The win over Marquette wasn't a shock to me, as that Golden Eagles team was trending in the wrong direction going into the tournament.

That was also a great matchup for Murray State and that's simply not the case in this on. Racers aren't a big team and struggled this season against teams that could impose their will down low. FSU also has a very deep and athletic roster. They sub a lot and will constantly be putting out fresh bodies on Morant to wear him down. It will also be a lot tougher stopping a legit team offense after facing the one-man show in Markus Howard with Marquette. Give me FSU -4.5!

Pistons vs. Blazers

Jack’s Free Pick Saturday: Detroit Pistons +5

The Detroit Pistons are playing as well as anyone in the NBA right now. They are 15-5 SU & 14-6 ATS in their last 20 games overall. They are also rested coming in playing just their 2nd game in 5 days here against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Blazers have also been playing well, winning five of their last six games coming in. However, they just lost CJ McCollum to injury. And they’ve been able to beat the Pacers by 8 and Mavs by 8 at home without him, but the Pistons will be a different animal. Look for Detroit to likely win this game outright, but we’ll take the points for some added insurance.

The Pistons are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games off a win by more than 10 points. Detroit is 4-1 ATS in its last five gams vs. a team with a winning % above .600. The Pistons are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings. Bet the Pistons Saturday.

DAVE COKIN

MURRAY STATE vs. FLORIDA STATE

Take: FLORIDA STATE -4.5

I’m well aware of the horrific Leonard Hamilton chalk record in this event. Nevertheless, this is not a good matchup for Murray State. I can see the Racers hanging in for awhile, but my thought is that they eventually get physically dominated by the bigger, deeper and simply more athletic Seminoles. If I lose, I’ll just blame it on Hamilton as this is a game I definitely feel the favorite should win. Florida State minus the points.

DWAYNE CONNORS

Your comp winner for this Saturday in the Big Dance is the Golden Gophers plus the double-digits against their conference-rivals the Spartans in this East Region second rounder.

The teams met just once this season back on February 9th when Michigan State trounced Minnesota in East Lansing, 79-55 as the -13 1/2 point home favorites. That win pushed Sparty's record to 7-2 straight up the last 9 meeting with the Golden Gophers. Against the spread things have been a little tighter however, as State is just 4-3 against the spread over the last 7 showdowns.

Tom Izzo's team dodged a huge bullet on Thursday night when they found themselves down by a point with just over 6 minutes remaining in regulation before they were able to get some breathing room in their 76-65 win over Bradley.

Richard Pitino's team had a little bit of an easier time of things, as the Gophers rode 11 baskets from behind the arc en-route to an 86-76 upset win over Louisville. It helped that Minny enjoyed vocal crowd support, as this venue in Des Moines is less than a 4 hours drive from their campus. I would think the same support will be present tonight to cheer on Minnesota against this conference rival.

Minnesota has enjoyed the role of underdog, as they have won 5 of their last 7 games both straight up and against the spread, and they have all been as the underdog. Coffey, Murphy, Oturu and Kalscheur all average double-figures, while McBrayer is not far off that pace with over 9 points per game scored

Michigan State continues to be paced by point guard Cassius Winston who scored a game-high 26 points in Thursday's win over the Braves. Nick Ward is also getting back into playing form after missing time with that broken hand. In the end the Spartans likely have a little too much as the # 2 seed, but that doesn't mean they won't be tested by their proud conference rival.

Minnesota gives Michigan State a good scare before exiting this Saturday evening.

2* MINNESOTA
