Comp play for Sunday is to look for the fun for the Cherry and White to begin early on Sunday when the Temple Owls play host to the Green Wave of Tulane.

Mike Dunleavy's team is atrocious this season, as they enter play in Philadelphia this Sunday afternoon with just 4 wins on the year against 23 losses in their 27 games played this year. Their current losing streak stands at 17 in a row, and they are on a 1-5 spread slide their last 6 games, and are just 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 away from New Orleans.

The Owls are off a road loss at Memphis to drop to 20-8, but they will get back into the win column in this game, and do so convincingly, as they have covered both 4 of 5 against the math when playing off a straight up loss their last 5, and also 4-1 against the spread when playing on their home hardwood.

Temple has won the last 3 series meetings, and they have also won 8 of the 9 overall meetings since these teams became conference rivals.

Fran Dunphy's Owls may own a 20-8 mark but getting a ticket to the Dance out of the AAC is not going to be an easy order for a team with their status, as they do have Houston and Cincinnati that are locks to get bids out of this mid-major, but that may well be it.

No room for error prior to the conference tournament, and since the Green Wave have played more like a "splash" this season, I suggest laying the big wood with Temple to secure this easy 20 points or better victory.

3* TEMPLE

Sunday free play comes in Conference USA action where I will side with the puzzling Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in their "bonus play" game against the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss.

Western is one of those teams that you could call an "underachiever", as they sport a 17-12 mark, but certainly could be a lot better than that record suggests. The talent is there, but the 'Toppers struggle with consistency on the offensive end, as they average 71.9 points per game - not terrible, but not exactly an offensive "juggernaut" either since they also allow 70 points per game to be scored on them.

As for Southern Miss, they also own 17 wins, but they sport 2 less losses than today's foe. Problem is the Golden Eagles saw their 6 game winning streak halted at home their last time out against UAB in overtime. That is the same UAB team that Western Kentucky just beat in Birmingham by 6 earlier this week. That cover put the Hilltoppers at 6-2 against the spread their last 8 in Conference USA action.

The other issue I see for USM is the fact they cannot seem to get that breakthrough win against Western Kentucky, as they were on the short-side of a 66-63 final on their home court in this year's first meeting to drop to 0-6 both straight up and against the spread the last 6 times these conference rivals have faced one another.

With this being one of the "top pod" pairing in today's new "bonus play" for the conference, I will side with the home team for both the win and the cover.

Take Western Kentucky.

Yes, the Predators are playing their third in a row away from Music City, and yes they are also playing this game off road losses at St. Louis and at Winnipeg, but they do catch a bit of a break here tonight in the Twin Cities, as they will be facing a Minnesota Wild team that was on ice last night in Calgary and are returning home after their last pair away from home, and 4 of 5 overall on the highway.

Minnesota has caught some major fire, as they followed their 5 game losing streak (0-4-1) wins wins in 5 in a row after stopping Calgary in Calgary last night.

Nashville did win the first series meeting between the teams at the Bridgestone Arena, 4-2, and they have in 3 of the last 4 series meetings. Problem is, they did all come on home ice, as the host in the series stands at 8-0 the last 8 times these Western Conference rivals have skated against one another.

As far as the standings go, the Preds have slipped to second in the Central, but are just one point away from the leading Jets, while the Wild are in a hotly-contested jostle for one of the Wild Card spots up for dibs in the conference.

I just get the feeling that even though Minnesota is back at home for this one, and knowing full-well the host has laid claim to those last 8 wins, this is actually a better spot for the visitor.

Take the Predators in this critical Western Conference showdown on Sunday night.

HUSKIES @ CARDINAL

The Washington Huskies will be the road favorite at Stanford Sunday. Washington is 13-2 in the PAC12, but the Cardinal are 10-2 at home. Washington has looked really vulnerable of late. Not only did they lose outright to bottom feeders California at Berkley, they came very close to losing to the Cougars at Pullman. The Cardinal average 83.4 points on better than 52 percent shooting at home, and I don't think the Huskies can match that kind of offensive production. History certainly favors the home team, and Washington has lost four straight at Stanford. The home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings, and the Huskies are 1-4 ATS in their last five at Stanford.

Take STAN.

The NBA Comp Play is on Minnesota. Game 585 at 6:05 eastern. The Wolves have covered 4 of 5 on the road vs teams with a winning home record and tonight they fit a solid 88% system that plays on rested non conference road teams that failed to cover as a road dog while scoring 110 or more and allowing 120 or more, vs a team like the Wizards that failed to cover as a road dog of 5 or more. Washington has failed to cover 7 of 9 off a loss by 10 or more and 6 of 8 with 1 day of rest. The winning team is on 21-0 spread run in this series, Make it Minnesota.

Avalanche-120

1* free play on the Colorado Avalanche.

The Avs have won five of their last seven overall, and both of their losses during that span came in close games decided by a single goal. They sit just one point out of a playoff spot, and every game from this point on will be a must win. They should have a good chance to pick up a win here in Anaheim, against a Ducks team that has lost five straight. They were held to one goal or less in four of those five games. Leading scorer Ryan Getzlaf has missed the last five games due to an upper body injury, and there shouldn't be any hurry for him to rush back into action. The Avs have won three of the last four head to head meetings, and Anaheim has lost 10 of it's last 12 at the Duck Pond.

Take COL.

ND/Louisville 1:30: Louisville has not been the same team since their epic home loss to Duke on February 12th when they gave up a 23 point lead. Since then, Louisville has gone 1-3 SU / 0-4 ATS. Moreover, as pathetic as ND is this season, the Irish actually have averaged 5 PPG more over the last 5 games than L'ville. ND has shown some life on the road at 10-4 ATS including covering 3 of their last 4. The slumping Cardinals are giving almost double digits here and I'm not biting. ND the call.

Rider-2

Mack Attack Free Play for Sunday, March 3. 2019 is on the Rider Broncos

10-7 in the MAAC, Rider has faded somewhat after a 7-1 start. The Broncos get the remedy here in Marist, a team they've beaten five straight times, including the last two on this floor by double-digits. The Broncs came from 16 down in the final 11 minutes to edge the Foxes in Jersey back on January 27th. With Marist rocking a 3-5 straight up home mark in conference play. prefer to lay a bucket with the visitors.

Wolves vs. Wizards
Wizards-1½

My 1* Free Play is on the Washington Wizards (6:05 EST).

The Wolves come to the nation’s capital having lost three of their last four games. Karl Anthony Towns continues to lead the team with 23.9 points and 12.4 boards per game, while Derrick Rose is averaging 18.2 points and 4.5 assists per night.

Washington has just one win in six games since the All Star game. Off a loss to the Celtics, I think the home side bounces back here finally though. Keep your eyes on Bradley Beal, who is averaging 25.8 points, 5.1 boards and 5.4 assists per game.

I don’t normally take “ATS stats” into consideration when making my picks, unless they’re completely lop-sided in nature and or completely relevant to the overall situation. And that’s the case here, as note that Minnesota is a terrible 4-11 ATS this season as a road dog of six points or less (also just 15-17 ATS on the road overall.)

I think it’s significant to note as well that Washington enters a money-making 16-11 ATS at home this year.

I think the “hungrier” home side is the correct call in this one. Consider the Wizards on Sunday night.

Good luck…Larry

Take: LOUISVILLE -9

Tough times for the Cardinals lately, and they could really use a convincing win for their psyche. Poor shooting Notre Dame might be the antidote for their recent ailments. This number seems short to me as I expected something more along the lines of Louisville -12. At -9, at least a lean to the Cardinals.
