Top NBA Betting Trends of the Day 01/17/2019

Date 17th Jan 2019
Admir Aljic

NBA – TRENDS OF THE DAY

It is unusual to see six games in the Association on Thursday night, but there are plenty of interesting markets among today’s schedule. The action starts earlier as the New York Knicks and the Washington Wizards will lock horns at 3:00 PM ET in the NBA Global showdown from O2 Arena in London, UK. Elsewhere, Indiana hosts Philadelphia, Chicago head to Denver, while Oklahoma City welcomes the Los Angeles Lakers, so we bring you all need-to-know betting trends and notes for tonight’s most interesting games to help you crack the NBA odds.

Featured game: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Indiana Pacers

The Philadelphia 76ers (29-16; 21-24 ATS) are coming off a 149-107 demolition job over the Minnesota Timberwolves at home to earn their second win in a row. The Indiana Pacers (29-14; 22-20-1 ATS) are also on a two-game winning streak following another thrashing of the Phoenix Suns 131-97 on the home court, occupying the No. 3 seed in the East with one game ahead of the Sixers. The Pacers opened as 3-point favorites on this one with the total at 224.5 points and the Sixers at +130 money line odds. This will be their third head-to-head duel of the season and the series is tied with the visiting team winning on both occasions. Indiana is 7-3 straight up and 6-4 ATS in its last ten meetings with Phila, and is 8-1 straight up and 5-4 ATS in the last nine H2H duels on the home court.

The Pacers are 7-2 straight up and 4-5 ATS in their last nine games overall, and the over has hit in all these nine encounters. Also, they are on a four-game winning streak at home, while the Pacers are 9-1 straight up and 6-4 ATS in their previous ten showings at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Sixers are 6-2 straight up and 4-4 ATS in their last eight games overall, and the over is 5-3 during that span. Philadelphia is 4-4 straight up and 3-5 ATS in its last eight games on the road, while the Sixers are 7-4 straight up and 5-6 ATS in their previous 11 road meetings with the Eastern Conference.

New York Knicks vs. Washington Wizards

The New York Knicks (10-33; 19-22-2 ATS) are riding a four-game losing streak following a 108-105 defeat to Philadelphia as it seems like the Knicks are steadily tanking the season. The Washington Wizards (18-26; 19-25 ATS) are coming off a 140-138 overtime loss to Toronto that put an end to their two-game winning streak, and the Wizards are back into the playoff race after some nice displays over the last few weeks. The Wizards will be looking for their third straight win over the Knicks this season, opening as 6.5-point favorites on this one with the total at 228.0 points, while they are 10-1 straight up and 9-2 ATS in their previous 11 meetings with New York.

The Wizards are 5-3 straight up and 7-1 ATS in their last eight games overall, scoring 119.8 points per contest during that span (5th in the league) on 39.3% shooting from deep (7th), while the over has hit on five occasions in the process. Also, the Wizards are 4-3 straight up and 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings with the Eastern Conference. On the other side, the Knicks are 1-11 straight up and 4-8 ATS in their previous 12 showings, allowing 117.7 points per game in that span (27th) on 48.7% shooting (also 27th), while the over has hit on six occasions in the process. The Knicks are 0-7 straight up and 2-5 ATS in their last seven meetings with the Eastern Conference, and the under is 5-2 during that stretch.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Los Angeles Lakers (24-21; 19-25-1 ATS) are having a difficult time without LeBron James, but they’ve managed to win three of their last five games including a 107-100 home victory over the Chicago Bulls last time out. On the other side, the Oklahoma City Thunder (26-17; 23-20 ATS) has dropped four of outs last five games and is coming off an ugly 142-126 defeat at the Atlanta Hawks. Despite a poor form, the Thunder opened as a 10-point favorite on this one with the Lakers at +425 money line odds and the total at 226.0 points. Oklahoma City is 7-3 straight up and 6-4 ATS in its last ten meetings with the Lakers and is 9-1 straight up and ATS in the last ten H2H duels in Oklahoma where the previous six were ended in the under.

Oklahoma City is just 5-7 straight up and ATS in its previous 12 games overall, while the Thunder is 2-3 straight up and ATS in its last five showings at home. Also, OKC is only 1-4 straight up and ATS in its last five games as a favorite, and is 4-3 straight up and 3-4 ATS in its previous seven encounters when listed as a double-digit favorite. The Los Angeles Lakers are 3-5 straight up and 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight games overall, and are 3-5 straight up and 4-4 ATS in their last eight showings on the road. Also, the Lakers are 0-5 straight up and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games when listed as double-digit underdogs.

Chicago Bulls vs. Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets (29-14; 23-20 ATS) are coming off a terrible 142-111 home loss to the Golden State Warriors that put an end to their 12-game winning streak at Pepsi Center. The Nuggets will try to bounce back tonight when they host the hapless Chicago Bulls who are riding an eight-game losing streak following a 107-100 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers. The Nuggets opened as 12-point favorites with the Bulls at +700 money line odds and the total at 213.0 points, and they have won six straight meetings with the Bulls at any location, covering on four occasions while the over is 5-1 in the process.

The Nuggets are 10-5 straight up and just 6-9 ATS in their last 15 games overall, allowing 114.3 points per 100 possessions during that span which is the 3rd-worst record in the league. They are 5-0 straight up and 4-1 ATS in the last five home meetings with the Eastern Conference, and are 6-0 straight up and 5-1 ATS in their previous six showings as double-digit favorites. On the other side, the Bulls are 2-6 straight up and 4-3-1 ATS in their last eight outings on the road, and are 0-6 straight up and 3-3 ATS in their last six games on the road when listed as double-digit underdogs.

NBA Totals Picks Expert Over Under The Total Predictions 1/17/2019

Date 17th Jan 2019
Allen Moody

We ended our little slide with the totals on Wednesday and now just have six games on the slate for Wednesday.

New York vs. Washington: This one tips off a 3 p.m. EST and is being played in London and bettors are expecting the players, and possibly the officials, to ensure it’s an entertaining game, as the total opened 225 and has been bet up to 227 with nearly two-thirds of the wagers on the over. Using away numbers from both teams I’d have this one at 227, but it’s typically more difficult to shoot at an unfamiliar arena. Will just stay away from this one.

Philadelphia at Indiana: This one opened at 224.5 and just hit 225 after more than 70% of the wagers have come in on the under. I have this one at just 207, but hard to take the Pacers under right now, as they’ve played nine straight overs and have gotten away from playing tough defense, allowing 115 points in their six games so far in January.

Sacramento at Charlotte: The total here opened at 230 and just dropped to 229.5 with pretty good two-way action on this one. Sacramento has had a couple of low-scoring games recently and are 0-5 in their last five, including a 104-97 win over Charlotte five days ago that went under the total by 30 points. The Hornets are 5-3 in totals against teams who held them to less than 100 last game and I have this one at 237, so will take a shot on the over in this one.

Phoenix at Toronto: This one came out late and is at 223 after opening slightly higher. I also have this one at 223.

Chicago at Denver: This one came out at 212 and is now 213 as nearly 80% of the wagers have come in on the over. I made this one 208, but not really anxious to jump in on this one, as Denver, much like Indiana, has gotten away from playing defense, although last game may be the slap in the face they needed to realize they’re not good enough offensively to outscore the better teams in the league.

Lakers at Oklahoma City: The total on this one came out at 226 and is holding pretty steady with 60% of the wagers on the over, although a few places have moved it to 226.5. I have this one at 223.

(SU - Straight Up, ATS – Against the Spread)

Thursday’s NBA card starts off with an afternoon matchup at The O2 from London as the New York Knicks and Washington Wizards square off at 3:00 p.m. ET. The NBA isn’t really doing itself justice with this pair but I guess the fans in the United Kingdom would welcome any escape from reality these days. New York has played in London twice (1-1) while Washington is making its London debut. The last three regular season games played at this venue have seen the ‘over’ connect.

Outside of this early matchup, we have five other games slated on Thursday and below is my quick handicap on each contest.

Philadelphia (29-16 SU, 21-24 ATS) at Indiana (29-14 SU, 22-20-1 ATS)

This is easily the best matchup on the night and it will be the third meeting between the Eastern Conference contenders this season. The 76ers captured a 100-94 road win on Nov. 7 before the Pacers avenged that setback with a 113-101 win on Dec. 4 at Philadelphia.

The oddsmakers opened Indiana as a short favorite (-3) for the third installment and this game is a toss-up due to the similarities for both clubs. The Pacers (20-3) and 76ers (22-8) have both beaten up on teams below .500 this season and they’ve taken advantage of playing in the weaker of the two conferences. For instance, the Southeast Division is by far the worst group in the NBA and Indiana (8-1) and Philadelphia (8-3) have thrived against those five clubs.

Also, Philadelphia has racked up its win total with an 10-3 mark versus the Western Conference and it hasn’t played any of the division leaders (Nuggets, Warriors, Rockets).

One of those wins against a weaker squad from the West came on Tuesday as the 76ers snapped a three-game ATS losing skid with a 149-107 blowout win over Minnesota as a six-point home favorite.

At the same time, Indiana captured its second straight rout with a 131-97 win over Phoenix as a 10 ½-point home favorite on Tuesday. Last Friday, the Pacers diced up the Knicks 121-106 on the road and that victory snapped a 0-5 ATS drought.

Based on what we’ve seen in the first-half of the season, I would expect most bettors to lean to Indiana at home tonight. The Pacers (15-5 SU, 11-9 ATS) have been a tough out and they enter this game with a 9-1 record over their last 10 games from Bakers Life Fieldhouse. Plus, Philadelphia hasn’t been as sharp on the road (10-12 SU, 8-14 ATS) so far. Make a note that the 76ers have been better since they acquired Jimmy Butler from the Timberwolves, going 9-6 as a visitor.

At first glance I thought the opening total (224 ½) on this game was too high based on Indiana’s scoring defense (103 PPG), ranked second in the league. However, you can’t ignore the fact that the Pacers have seen the ‘over’ cash in nine straight and 10 of their last 11 games. The offense is averaging 117.8 PPG during this span and they’ll be facing a Philadelphia defense (112.4 PPG) that has been suspect.

TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 8:05 p.m. ET.

Sacramento (23-21 SU, 26-17-1 ATS) at Charlotte (20-23 SU, 21-22 ATS)

These teams just played last Saturday in California and Sacramento captured a 104-97 win as a 5 ½-point home favorite. On the East Coast, the Hornets are listed as three-point favorites for the rematch and that could be a tough sell. Even though Charlotte defeated San Antonio 108-93 on Monday, the first game back from a long road trip (6 games) is never easy. Plus, Sacramento has won four of its last five and is 5-1 ATS in its last six. Make a note that the one loss came on the road, and the Kings have surrendered four consecutive away defeats. Even though last Saturday’s result between the pair went ‘under’ (233 ½), the ‘over’ (230) could be a look tonight knowing Sacramento is 16-4 to the high side on the road.

Phoenix (11-34 SU, 20-25 ATS) at Toronto (33-13 SU, 19-26-1 ATS)

No overnight line was posted on this matchup with the speculation that Toronto will rest Kawhi Leonard after the club lost at Boston 117-108 last night. The Raptors opened as 10 ½-point home favorites this morning and the number was quickly pushed up to 11 ½. However, it was recently announced that Leonard and Kyle Lowry will be 'out' and the Raptors are now nine-point favorites. While you could be hesitant to lay the points, make a note that Toronto has gone 7-1 both SU and ATS on no rest this season. Plus, it’s cleaned up at home (18-4 SU, 10-12 ATS) and it owns a solid record (17-3) against losing teams. Phoenix is headed to the NBA Lottery again and backing them on the road (4-17 SU, 9-12 ATS) hasn’t been profitable. However, the four road wins all came against teams versus the Eastern Conference and their non-conference road mark (4-6 SU, 7-3 ATS) could give you reason to grab the points. Just hope they shoot a high percentage because it’s hard to back a team that’s allowing 117.6 points per game on the road. If you want another angle that could have you backing the ‘dog, then be aware that Toronto is 11-0 SU this season as a double-digit favorite but only 4-7 ATS in those games.

Chicago (10-34 SU, 20-23-1 ATS) at Denver (29-14 SU, 23-20 ATS)

The Nuggets were humbled 142-111 on Tuesday at home by Golden State in wire-to-wire fashion. The club will look to bounce back on Thursday as a heavy favorite (-12 ½) against Chicago, who has dropped eight straight games (3-4-1 ATS). Despite the loss to the Warriors, Denver owns an impressive 18-4 SU and 14-8 ATS mark at the Pepsi Center. Going back to last season, the Nuggets have won nine straight as double-digit home favorites and they’ve gone 6-3 ATS during this span. The Bulls have been catching big points all season and expecting an upset could be foolish. Chicago is 0-13 SU and just 4-9 ATS this season when catching 10-plus points. The pair did play to a close call on Oct. 31 as the Nuggets nipped the Bulls 108-107 on the road, but failed to cover (-8) as road favorites.

L.A. Lakers (24-21 SU, 18-25-2 ATS) at Oklahoma City (26-17 SU, 23-20 ATS)

The late-night TNT (9:35 p.m. ET) matchup has the Thunder listed as a 10-point home favorite over the Lakers and this is certainly a headscratcher. Oklahoma City is 1-4 both SU and ATS in its last five games, which includes an embarrassing 142-126 loss at Atlanta on Tuesday as a 10-point road favorite. Do you lay the same price at home against the Lakers? Los Angeles (-7) is coming off a 107-100 home win over Chicago on Monday, which improved its record to 4-7 since LeBron James went down with an injury. The Lakers offense remains inconsistent (105.3 PPG) without James and that’s helped the ‘under’ go 8-3 during his absence. One of those setbacks came to Oklahoma City, a 107-100 decision at the Staples Center on Jan. 2. The game went ‘under’ (229 ½) and the low side has now cashed in four straight encounters between the pair and seven of the last nine meetings.
