Game of the Night: Pelicans at Clippers – 10:35 PM EST

Los Angeles (24-18 SU, 24-18 ATS) has been riding a roller coaster of late as the Clippers have won two straight, lost two straight, won three in a row, and have currently dropped consecutive games in this stretch since Christmas. Following a 21-point setback at Denver on Thursday, the Clippers returned home and fell to old friend Blake Griffin and the Pistons on Saturday afternoon, 109-104 as seven-point favorites. Three Clippers finished with 20 points or more, but couldn’t slow down Griffin, who torched Los Angeles for 44 points in his first road game against his former team since getting traded last season.

The Pelicans (20-23 SU, 19-24 ATS) started their five-game road trip with a loss on Saturday at Minnesota, 110-106 as a short favorite. New Orleans was limited to 5-of-25 shooting from three-point range, while scoring only 17 points in the fourth quarter. Anthony Davis led the Pelicans with 30 points and 14 rebounds, but New Orleans fell to 1-6 in the last seven games away from Smoothie King Center.

These two Western Conference squads have split a pair of matchups in New Orleans this season. The Pelicans held off the Clippers in the first matchup in October, 116-109, but finished UNDER the total of 237. L.A. picked up revenge in the second meeting, 129-126 as 1 ½-point underdogs in December. The Clippers shot 59% from the floor, led by 27 points from Tobias Harris, as the game eclipsed the total of 234 ½. Last season, the Pelicans captured both meetings at Staples Center, while New Orleans is 4-2 in the past six matchups since the start of the 2017-18 season.

Unrested Rockets

Houston (24-18 SU, 21-20-1 ATS) dropped to 3-8 ATS the last 11 games as a road favorite following Sunday’s 116-109 setback at Orlando. The Rockets squandered a 12-point lead, while getting outscored in each of the last three quarters to a Magic club that played on the second of a back-to-back after beating Boston on Saturday. James Harden scored 38 points for Houston, but somehow shot 1-of-17 from three-point range, as the Rockets converted 10-of-42 attempts from downtown.

The Rockets seek their third home win this season with no rest, while also going for their third victory against the Grizzlies (19-23 SU, 18-24 ATS). Memphis has dropped seven of its past eight games, including Saturday’s 112-108 defeat at Miami to fall to 1-8 in the previous nine contests away from FedEx Forum. Now, the Grizzlies will be trying to break through against the Rockets for the first time this season as each of the first two meetings finished OVER the total and Houston grabbed the cover as a favorite each time.

Monday, Monday

For the second consecutive Monday, the Celtics and Nets are hooking up. Boston (25-17 SU, 22-20 ATS) cruised past Brooklyn (21-23 SU, 23-21 ATS) a week ago at TD Garden, 116-95 to easily cash as 10 ½-point favorites. The Celtics used balanced scoring as eight different players posted double-figures, paced by Kyrie Irving’s 17 points, while Boston put up at least 30 points in three different quarters. However, the Celtics look to finish off their three-game road trip with a win after losing in the first two stops at Miami and Orlando as a favorite.

The Nets return to Barclays Center where they have won eight of their last nine games. Brooklyn tries to rebound after getting crushed at Toronto on Friday, 122-105 to suffer their third loss in the last month as a double-digit road underdog. The Nets have covered four of their last five as a home underdog, but Brooklyn has dropped 10 consecutive meetings with Boston since January 16, including five straight home defeats.

Staying Golden

The Kings (22-21 SU, 25-18 ATS) look to close out a perfect 3-0 homestand at Golden 1 Center following victories over the Pistons and Hornets. Sacramento has lost seven of its past 11 home contests to Western Conference opponents, including a 113-108 overtime setback to Portland (26-18 SU, 23-21 ATS) on New Year’s Day. The Kings are riding a four-game UNDER streak, while holding three straight foes to 102 points or fewer at home.

The Blazers head to Sacramento with no rest after suffering a 116-113 defeat at Denver on Sunday night. That loss ended a four-game skid, although Portland cashed as 4 ½-point underdogs to improve to 6-2 ATS the past eight contests. Portland has captured four consecutive meetings with Sacramento since last season, while limiting the Kings to 38% shooting back on January 1. The Blazers have seen success with no rest this season by posting a 4-2 SU/ATS mark, but both losses came away from the Moda Center.

Lotte of Losses

Things have unraveled for the Hornets (19-23 SU, 20-22 ATS) on their six-game road trip as Charlotte has posted a 1-4 SU/ATS record in the first five contests. Three of the four losses have come by double-digits, while being held to 97 points or less in the last two defeats at Portland and Sacramento. Since starting the season at 2-0 on the road, the Hornets have dropped 15 of the past 18 games at Spectrum Center, while posting a 2-9 ATS mark in the last 11 on the highway.

Charlotte travels to San Antonio to face the Spurs (25-19 SU, 26-17-1 ATS), who have won seven straight games at AT&T Center. The Spurs dropped the back-end of a home-and-home set with Oklahoma City on Saturday, 122-112, two nights after a thrilling a double-overtime win over the Thunder. San Antonio fell to 15-4 ATS the last 19 games overall, but the Spurs have covered in each of their last 15 home wins dating back to November.

Back on Track

The Jazz (23-21 SU, 22-21-1 ATS) have stepped up following an up and down start to the season, as Utah is 9-4 the last 13 games to pull above the .500 mark. Utah seeks a perfect 4-0 homestand after winning the first three games against the Magic, Lakers, and Bulls, while winning five of the past six at Vivint Smart Home Arena. The Jazz failed to cash in Saturday’s 110-102 victory over Chicago as 12-point favorites as Utah trailed by one point heading into the fourth quarter.

The Pistons (18-23 SU, 18-22-1 ATS) look to capitalize off Saturday’s 109-104 victory over the Clippers as seven-point underdogs. Detroit has dropped five consecutive matchups with Utah since 2017, including a 110-105 setback at Little Caesars Arena on January 5. The Pistons blew an early 18-point lead after one quarter as Detroit fell to 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings with Utah, while they look to end a five-game losing streak off a win.

NBA Totals Picks Expert Over Under The Total Predictions 1/14/2019

Date 14th Jan 2019
Allen Moody
Last Updated: 2019-01-14

Once again, we drop a game after fighting our way back to .500 with the NBA totals, which has now happened the last four times. Once again, one bad quarter was enough to to be the difference between winning and losing, which happens with totals more often than sides. So, onto Monday’s somewhat small slate of games, that has a couple of decent games on the slate.

Boston at Brooklyn: Not a bad matchup here, as the total came out at 221 and has now settled in at 220.5 with pretty mixed betting on both the over and the under. The Celtics have been a solid over team all season, going 26-16 including 14-8 on the road, while the Nets have been a little better scoring team when they’re in front of the home fans. I have this one at 230, so will take the over in this one right out of the gate.

Memphis at Houston: The total here opened at 203 and has shot all the way up to 206 with more than 90% of the early wagers coming in on the over. The numbers agree with the move and are calling for a total of 209 points scored.

Charlotte at San Antonio: The total on this one opened at 223 and has held pretty steady with 55% of the early wagers coming in on the under. I made this one 224, so not much room for error, although both teams have fared decent in overs so far this season.

Detroit at Utah: The total here came out at 208.5 and has been bet up to 209.5 with nearly three-quarters of the wagers coming in on the over. My numbers are split right down the middle calling for 209 points.

Portland at Sacramento: The total in this one opened at 227.5 and has moved to 227 with nearly two-thirds of the wagers coming in on the over. I have this one at 225.

New Orleans at LA Clippers: The total in this one came out at 240 and has been knocked down to 239 with close to three-quarters of the wagers coming in on the under. I made this one 236 and games with a total of 240 or higher have gone 1-2 so far this season, with the Pelicans playing in both games that went under the total.

Featured game: Charlotte Hornets vs. San Antonio Spurs

The Charlotte Hornets (19-23; 20-22 ATS) will end their six-game journey with the visit to San Antonio, trying to avoid the fifth loss on this trip. The Hornets are on a three-game losing streak following a 104-97 defeat at the Sacramento Kings and are just half a game ahead of Detroit at the 9th spot of the Eastern Conference table. Charlotte is just 3-8 straight up and ATS in its last 11 games overall, while the Hornets are only 2-11 straight up and 3-10 ATS in their previous 13 showings on the road.

On the other side, the San Antonio Spurs (25-19; 26-18 ATS) are coming off back-to-back matchups with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and after a 154-147 double-overtime victory on the home court, the Spurs were beaten 122-112 at Oklahoma City. They are 7-3 straight up and 8-2 ATS in their last ten games overall, while the Spurs are playing very well on the home court and are 7-0 straight up and ATS in their last seven games at AT&T Center.

This will be the first head-to-head duel of the season between these two inter-conference foes and the Spurs opened as strong 8.5-point favorites with the total at 223.0 points and the Hornets at +295 money line odds. The Spurs have won four straight meetings with the Hornets, covering the spread three times in the process, and are 14-1 straight up and 9-5-1 ATS in their previous 15 duels with Charlotte. Likewise, the Spurs are 7-0 straight up and 6-1 ATS in their previous seven meetings with the Hornets in Texas.

Boston Celtics vs. Brooklyn Nets

The Boston Celtics (25-17; 22-20 ATS) have dropped two games in a row, losing at the Miami Heat 115-99 and the Orlando Magic 105-103, and will continue their journey with the clash at the Brooklyn Nets. The Celtics have lost three consecutive games on the road and are just 1-5 straight up and ATS in their previous six showings away from home, while the over has hit in five of these six games. Also, the Celtics are 6-4 straight up and ATS in their last ten games overall and the over is 7-3 during that span.

The Brooklyn Nets (21-23; 23-21 ATS) are still occupying the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference following a 122-105 defeat at the Toronto Raptors which was their second loss in the last three games overall. The Nets are on a four-game winning streak on the home court, covering the spread on three occasions, and are 8-2 straight up and ATS in their previous ten showings at Barclays Center. Brooklyn is 6-4 straight up and 5-5 ATS in its last ten games overall and the over is 6-4 during that stretch.

This will be the second H2H duel of the season between these two divisional foes, and the Celtics easily overcame Brooklyn 116-95 as 10.5-point favorites at home just seven days ago. Boston opened as a 3.5-point favorite on this one with the total at 221.0 points and the Nets at +165 money line odds, while 90.0% of wagers are on the visitors to cover. The Celtics are 10-0 straight up and 5-5 ATS in their last ten meetings with the Nets and are 5-0 straight up and 3-2 ATS in their last five H2H duels in Brooklyn. The Nets are 4-6 straight up and 6-4 ATS in their last ten home games versus the Atlantic Division, while the Celtics are 5-5 straight up and 3-7 ATS in their last ten road meetings with the Atlantic Division.

New Orleans Pelicans vs. Los Angeles Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers (24-18; 24-18 ATS) are on a two-game losing streak following a 109-104 home defeat to the Detroit Pistons which was their third loss in the last five games on the home court. The Clippers are 2-3 ATS during that span and are just 5-6 straight up and ATS in their previous 11 showings at Staples Center. Likewise, the Clippers are 3-4 straight up and ATS in their previous seven games overall, and the under is 5-2 in that seven-game span.

On the other side, the New Orleans Pelicans (20-23; 19-24 ATS) are coming off a 110-106 defeat at the Minnesota Timberwolves that put an end to their three-game winning streak. The Pelicans are 5-3 straight up and 4-4 ATS in their last eight games overall and are just 1-7 straight up and 2-6 ATS in their last eight outings on the road. Also, the Pelicans are miserable 0-9 straight up and ATS in their last nine games on the road versus the Western Conference.

These two foes will meet each other for the third time this season and the series is tied after a couple of matchups in New Orleans. The Clippers opened as 2.5-point favorites on this one with the total at whopping 239.0 points and the Pelicans at +130 money line odds, while 60.0% of wagers are on the Clippers to cover. The Pelicans are 5-2 straight up and ATS in their last seven meetings with the Clippers and are 2-4 straight up and 4-2 ATS in the last six H2H duels at Staples Center, winning two road matchups in a row.

NBA Game Preview - Charlotte Hornets at San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs might not have a dominant overall record but they are one of the best home teams in the NBA in the 2018-19 season. They will look to keep up that excellence when they host the Charlotte Hornets in a game this week.

San Antonio has moved into playoff positioning due to a recent hot streak and is packed tightly with other teams in the West. The Hornets are pushing to make the postseason in the East so this game means quite a bit to both teams.

The Spurs are the better team and will clearly be the favorites to capture this matchup in NBA wagering.

This NBA basketball game between the Charlotte Hornets and San Antonio Spurs will be held at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas at 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday, January 14th, 2019. The game will be nationally televised on NBA TV.

Odds Analysis

The Hornets have a record of 19-23 on the season, but in the inferior East that is currently enough to snag the No. 8 seed. Charlotte has been struggling of late and needs to snap out of it because there are multiple teams on its tail. The Hornets are just 5-15 on the road this season and would need to pull a major upset to improve on that mark.

The Spurs are 25-19 on the season. San Antonio has won 18 of its 23 home games this season and can’t afford to blow this one considering it is within two games of the five teams above the Spurs in the West.

Both of these teams score at a pretty healthy clip so the scoring total could be higher than most games this week in NBA betting.

Key Stat

5. That’s the number of losses for the Hornets in their past six games as they have fallen below .500 on the season. Charlotte has looked like an improved team for much of the year but this recent lull has it on the precipice of falling outside of the top eight seeds in the East.

The lull began with a blowout loss at home to the Mavericks and continued with a road loss to the Nuggets. Charlotte picked up its lone victory of this stretch with a defeat of the Suns, but has dropped consecutive matchups to the Clippers, Trail Blazers and Kings. All of those games were on the road and this one will be as well. It’s fair to wonder how the Hornets are doing physically in the midst of such a grueling road trip that hasn’t been successful.

Player To Watch

Tony Parker -- The Hornets guard played with the Spurs for 17 years before heading to Charlotte this offseason. He had an illustrious career with San Antonio and will undoubtedly get a nice reception from the fans who rooted for him for so long.

Parker is 36 years old now and no longer a star, but still contributes for the Hornets. He has averaged 9.4 points and 3.8 assists per game in only 18.6 minutes of work, so he has been productive when on the floor. Parker will undoubtedly want to put on a nice show in this game, and a throwback performance would help his team have a shot at the upset.

The Spurs have played really well lately and have been great at home all year. San Antonio has the superior team and the Hornets are wrapping a long and unsuccessful road trip. The Spurs are going to be the favorites in this showdown, but even with a comfortable spread San Antonio is the choice to cover in NBA odds.

NBA ATS Pick: San Antonio Spurs 116, Charlotte Hornets 103
