Charlotte Hornets vs. Philadelphia 76ers Preview and Predictions 03-19-2018

18th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Philadelphia 76ers hope to keep taking advantage of lesser opponents as they fight for playoff positioning when they host the Charlotte Hornets on Monday. The Sixers took care of business against the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets - two of the five Eastern Conference teams that are at least 20 games below .500 - to begin the stretch and they also look forward to matchups with lowly squads Memphis and Orlando after finishing up with the Hornets.

Joel Embiid marked his 24th birthday with 24 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in Philadelphia's 120-116 win over the Nets on Friday, which left it alone in sixth place in the East and just 1 1/2 games out of third. Brooklyn actually had the lead in the final minute before a clutch 3-pointer by Robert Covington and a big block by Embiid helped the growing Sixers get to the finish line. "It lets them know because we've been on the other side of that," coach Brett Brown told reporters of surviving a tight stretch run. "We do have the people, I believe we have the structure and they have shown they have the poise to be able to walk a game down." The Hornets are inching toward mathematical elimination from the playoff race after falling 124-101 at the Knicks on Saturday, their seventh defeat in the past nine games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE HORNETS (30-40): Charlotte's white flag on the season may have been hoisted in the third quarter at New York on Saturday, as it was outscored 42-17 by a team that had dropped its previous nine games. "There are gonna be nights like that," center Dwight Howard told the media. "I didn't think it was going to be that bad, but it was a tough one for us. We are playing pretty good as of late, but tonight we just laid an egg." Howard struggled to 6-of-17 from the floor but recorded his fourth straight double-double to give him 709 for his career, one shy of Hall of Famer Charles Barkley for seventh on the NBA's list since the 1983-84 season.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (38-30): Covington's clutch 3-pointer gave him double digits in scoring in four straight games - his longest such streak since December, all since he was 0-for-10 from the field in a loss at Miami. "If you pass up on shots, then you never know if the next one is going to go in," Covington said of his mindset in fighting through slumps. "If you still have that rhythm, you still have the shot, you still have to take it no matter what. A lot of times, I take shots that feel good but they don't go in, but the next one might go in. You don't know if you don't take it." The 27-year-old is 7-for-10 from 3-point range over the last two games and he went 7-for-13 while averaging 19 points in two wins over Charlotte earlier this month.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. After recording back-to-back triple-doubles, Sixers PG Ben Simmons had 21 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds against Brooklyn.

2. Hornets C Cody Zeller (knee) missed the last four games and is day-to-day.

3. Philadelphia won each of the last four meetings by an average of 10 points.

PREDICTION: 76ers 119, Hornets 107

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Indiana Pacers Preview and Predictions 03-19-2018

18th March 2018 by Gracenote
Back-to-back tight losses to fellow Eastern Conference playoff contenders knocked the Indiana Pacers out of the No. 3 spot in the East, but a stretch with three of four at home should give them an opportunity to jump back up. The Pacers begin that stretch by hosting the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

Indiana rallied from a 21-point deficit to make it close at Washington on Saturday before falling 109-102 and lost the head-to-head tiebreaker to the Wizards in the process. "Every game is important," Pacers guard Victor Oladipo told reporters. "We just got to show a little bit of resiliency. Every game is important, whether it's on the road, whether it's at home. We've proven we can win on the road, but every game is important. We got to take it one game at a time, value every possession and value every game." Every game is important for the Lakers from a development standpoint, and the young team is having an impact in the postseason race in both conferences by playing hard down the stretch. Los Angeles won eight of 10 before dropping its last two and will begin its four-game trip with games against a pair of teams fighting for playoff position at Indiana and New Orleans.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles), FS Indiana

ABOUT THE LAKERS (31-38): Los Angeles came up just short against another East playoff team in a 92-91 home loss to Miami on Friday, and coach Luke Walton blamed a lack of toughness. "They were tougher than we were tonight, which is really frustrating," Walton told reporters after the loss. "I don't want to lose, but I don't mind losing when other teams make plays. We had moments of playing our brand of basketball and being physical and getting stops, but they ended up with 18 more shot attempts than us. Our main goal was don't turn the ball over and control the pace. We didn't do a good job with that tonight." The Lakers committed 20 turnovers in the loss and managed 41 points after halftime.

ABOUT THE PACERS (40-30): Indiana's comeback effort on Saturday was led by reserve swingman Lance Stephenson, who finished with a season-high 25 points and five assists. "He was aggressive. He was making plays," Pacers coach Nate McMillan told reporters of Stephenson. "I thought he was able to get to the basket and give us something off the bench. That was positive. We needed that." Indiana needed Stephenson's toughness while missing a pair of centers in Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis, both of whom are day-to-day with ankle injuries.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Lakers SF Brandon Ingram (hip) is traveling with the team but is not expected to play Monday.

2. Pacers PG Darren Collison is 6-of-9 from 3-point range over the last two games.

3. Los Angeles earned a 99-86 home win over Indiana on Jan. 19 despite Oladipo's 25 points.

PREDICTION: Pacers 107, Lakers 103

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Preview and Predictions 03-19-2018

18th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Cleveland Cavaliers' lengthy list of absences is extending to the coaching staff, but the team is still hanging onto the No. 3 spot in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers hope to have coach Tyronn Lue back on the bench when they host the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday.

Lue stayed in the locker room after halftime during Saturday's 114-109 win over the Chicago Bulls with an undisclosed illness -- the second time in the last six weeks that he could not make it through a game. "I mean, he's the captain of the ship, so absolutely," Cleveland superstar LeBron James told reporters. "We worry about his health, obviously. That's way more important than this game of basketball. We know he's been doing everything he needs to do to stay healthy. Take even more measures to get himself right. Everything that's been going on with our year, it's just another one." Milwaukee is three games behind Cleveland and sits in seventh place in the East after notching wins in three of its last four games. "Just got to do a good job coming in playing the basketball we know because at the end of the day we've got to play great basketball from now until the playoffs, so we can beat good teams in the playoffs," Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo told reporters.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FS Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE BUCKS (37-32): Milwaukee suffered a 126-117 loss at lowly Orlando on Wednesday and almost suffered another loss to a team at the bottom of the standings before pulling out a 122-117 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. "We can get a lot better," Antetokounmpo told reporters. "What'd they have, 117 (points)? We can get a lot better. That's not what we do. ... We are really, really good defensively if we want to be. We've got to have the mindset coming into the game that we've got to play defense, so we can win the game and not just offense." Antetokounmpo did his part on the defensive end Saturday with four steals and two blocks to go with 33 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (40-29): Cleveland finished up a 3-3 road trip with Saturday's win and will play seven of the next 10 at home as they try to hold off the Washington Wizards and Indiana Pacers in the race for the No. 3 spot in the East. The Cavaliers' lengthy list of absences does not include James, who notched his 15th triple-double of the season with 33 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists on Saturday -- his second triple-double in the last three games. James is averaging 30 points on 54.2 percent shooting, 10.3 rebounds and 9.1 assists in nine games this month.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Cavaliers SF Cedi Osman (hip), PF Larry Nance Jr. (hamstring), SG Kyle Korver (personal) and SG Rodney Hood (back) are all questionable for Monday.

2. Bucks SG Khris Middleton is averaging 24.8 points over the last four games and is 10-of-17 from 3-point range in that span.

3. Cleveland took the first two meetings this season, but Milwaukee grabbed a win in the latest matchup -- 119-116 at home on Dec. 19.

PREDICTION: Bucks 122, Cavaliers 115

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Brooklyn Nets Preview and Predictions 03-19-2018

18th March 2018 by Gracenote
Both the Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets have a chance for a rare winning streak when the teams meet Monday in New York City. The Grizzlies snapped their 19-game losing streak by knocking off Denver 101-94 on Saturday to cap a three-game homestand.

The victory pulled Memphis out of last place in the Western Conference and lifted a load off the players, who hadn't tasted a win in nearly two months. "It was great. We're all excited," forward Dillon Brooks - who scored a game-high 24 points - told reporters. "I was confident in the shot, and they were falling. They were all in the same spot, so I just shot it the same way." The Nets, who haven't won consecutive games since Jan. 19-21, got past Dallas 114-106 at home Saturday night. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scored 23 points - his highest output since Dec. 14 - to lead the way as Brooklyn improved to 4-10 at home against Western Conference opponents.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Memphis), YES (Brooklyn)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (19-50): Memphis nearly snapped its slide at 18 games when Tyreke Evans returned from a rib injury to score 25 points in Thursday's 111-110 loss to Chicago, and Evans produced 20 more to go along with seven assists against Denver. Wayne Selden scored 16 points in 22 minutes off the bench and Marc Gasol contributed 14 points as the Grizzlies avoided becoming the first team in four years to lose 20 straight inside of a season. "Proud of the guys and how they battled," Gasol told reporters. "To me, it confirms the way you need to play to win and how hard it is to win in this league and how easy it is to lose. If you don't do your work or you just shortcut, try to split one side of the floor, you're going to lose."

ABOUT THE NETS (22-48): Hollis-Jefferson is averaging 22 points on 55.2 percent shooting since returning to the starting lineup two games ago, the first of which was a stinging setback to Philadelphia in which Brooklyn lost a lead in the final minute. "Man, we thought about everything -- last night, not going in the locker room and talking about what we could've done and just coming out and competing," Hollis-Jefferson told reporters of the team's mindset after the loss to the 76ers. "Our leaders, including myself, we were like, 'Listen, we've got to start right now. Let's get it. Let's lock in and compete.' That's what we did." DeMarre Carroll has been able to move back to small forward with Hollis-Jefferson in the lineup and is averaging 18.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in those two games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Hollis-Jefferson scored 24 points in a 98-88 win at Memphis earlier this season.

2. Brooks is averaging 20 points over his last seven games to lift his season mark to 10.1.

3. Nets SG Allen Crabbe (illness) missed the last two contests and is day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Nets 108, Grizzlies 100

Denver Nuggets vs. Miami Heat Preview and Predictions 03-19-2018

18th March 2018 by Gracenote
Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone ripped into his team after it opened a crucial road trip with a loss to the team with the worst record in the NBA. Malone hopes his words can translate to action when the Nuggets continue the seven-game voyage with a visit to the Miami Heat on Monday.

"Our starting group did an awful job of starting the game with any real sense of urgency, and we built ourselves a 21-point hole on the road," Malone told reporters after his team fell behind 34-17 after one quarter en route to a seven-point loss at Memphis, which had dropped its previous 19 games. Malone questioned the overall effort of his team, which has dropped six of 11 to sink 1 1/2 games out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference entering Sunday's play and is 11-22 on the road. The Heat are also fighting for one of the final playoff seeds in the East but have a significant cushion over any other contenders as they come down the stretch run. Goran Dragic's late jumper lifted Miami to a 92-91 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday and his team has a 6 1/2-game lead over ninth-place Detroit with 12 to play.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Altitude (Denver), FS Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (38-32): Denver is 2-3 without leading scorer Gary Harris this season and he is expected to miss a few more games as he deals with a knee injury. Jamal Murray and Will Barton are often strong candidates to fill any scoring void but they combined to shoot 7-of-30 from the floor - including 1-of-10 from long range - in the loss to Memphis. "It's a tough one to swallow, for sure," Devin Harris told the team website. "But we've got to get over it quick, and we've got to come back (on Sunday), correct our mistakes. It's not an Xs and Os thing. It was more energy and effort, and that's something we can correct."

ABOUT THE HEAT (37-33): Miami is also just 3 1/2 games out of third place in the East as it begins a closing stretch in which it plays eight of 12 at home, where the team is 20-13. "Every game has playoff implications for us," center Kelly Olynyk told reporters in Los Angeles. "We have to treat every game like a playoff game. We really have to go home and take care of business." Dwyane Wade (hamstring) missed his third straight game in the victory while Hassan Whiteside (hip) sat for the fourth time in a row.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Nuggets PF Paul Millsap had 27 points and nine rebounds in a 95-94 win over Miami at home earlier this season.

2. Dragic reached the 30-point mark in back-to-back games for the first time and is 7-for-11 from 3-point range in that span.

3. Nuggets C Nikola Jokic has two triple-doubles and one double-double in his last four games.

PREDICTION: Heat 105, Nuggets 101

Chicago Bulls vs. New York Knicks Preview and Predictions 03-19-2018

18th March 2018 by Gracenote
The New York Knicks will try to close out a long homestand with a rare winning streak when they host the Chicago Bulls on Monday in a matchup of two teams playing out the string. The Knicks ended a nine-game losing streak with a 124-101 rout of Charlotte on Saturday, displaying a rare dose of solid defensive play to improve to 17-17 at home.

"One of the keys tonight was maybe to wake some players on this team. Maybe wake everybody up," rookie guard Frank Ntilikina told reporters after his team won for just the second time in the last 19 games. "I mean, we were just tired of losing and we showed it tonight." The Bulls have exchanged wins and losses through the first eight games this month after dropping a 114-109 decision at home to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. Denzel Valentine erupted for a career-high 34 points in the loss and he has made 13-of-18 3-pointers over the past two contests. Valentine was one of three Chicago players to score at least 20 points - led by rookie Lauri Markkanen's 33 - in a 122-119 overtime win at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 10.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE BULLS (24-45): Markkanen has missed three games in a row with a back issue while both Kris Dunn and Zach LaVine sat out Saturday's loss with injuries, but Chicago still managed to stay close with the Cavaliers and LeBron James. "It shows we have a great young core, no matter who's out there," Valentine told the media. "KD, Lauri and Zach were hurt so we've got to pick it up. Guys played hard and we fought to the end. Best player on the planet just put the team on his back and got a win." Cameron Payne chipped in 13 points and a career-high 10 assists in the setback.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (25-45): Tim Hardaway Jr. was the only New York starter to score in double digits with 25 points against Charlotte. "I just hate to lose in general," Hardaway told the media. "I was just trying to stay calm, stay poised if we were in a situation where we were down or it was close in the game." Ntilikina led a group of four reserves with at least 12 points as New York posted its best offensive output in a regulation game since March 9, 2016.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Bulls PF Bobby Portis is averaging 18 points to go along with 9.8 rebounds in four games since being held to two points on 1-of-10 shooting in a loss at Detroit on March 9.

2. Knicks PF Isaiah Hicks had 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting against Charlotte after producing a total of 19 points on 8-of-20 through his first seven games as a pro.

3. Chicago won all three previous meetings this season by a combined 10 points.

PREDICTION: Knicks 110, Bulls 108

Golden State Warriors vs. San Antonio Spurs Preview and Predictions 03-19-2018

18th March 2018 by Gracenote
A matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and the Golden State Warriors loses some luster with four stars unavailable, but that doesn't mean it's not important. The Spurs will try to hang onto one of the top eight spots in the Western Conference when they host the short-handed Warriors on Monday.

Golden State still has a shot at the No. 1 spot in the West but is operating without All-Stars Stephen Curry (ankle), Klay Thompson (hand) and Kevin Durant (rib), putting more responsibility on forward Draymond Green. "Without our other three All-Stars, he's taking on a different look and playing a different position, running different plays from those positions," Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters of Green. "Draymond likes to be challenged intellectually in this game, and I think this stretch right now, he's energized because he's doing something different." The Spurs remain without star small forward Kawhi Leonard, though he is reportedly getting closer to a return, but All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge is doing all he can to keep the team in the top eight. Aldridge is averaging 29.3 points during a three-game winning streak.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, NBCS Bay Area (Golden State), KENS (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (53-17): Green is getting plenty of help from point guard Quinn Cook, who is with the team on a two-way contract and set a season high with 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting in Saturday's 124-109 win at Phoenix. "Quinn is showing the world that he's an NBA player," Green told reporters. "I've said all along, I sit here and watch so many other teams play and I wonder, 'How is Quinn Cook a two-way player?' And then you've got guys in the league that can't dribble with their left hand or can't go left, can't go right, but you've got a guy like that as a two-way player. So, I'm happy for him. I pray that he gets rewarded and gets what he deserves." Cook is averaging 26.5 points on 21-of-30 shooting over the last two games.

ABOUT THE SPURS (40-30): San Antonio is in a four-way tie for fifth place in the West, two games ahead of the ninth-place Los Angeles Clippers, after knocking off the Minnesota Timberwolves 117-101 on Saturday. Aldridge did the heavy lifting with 39 points on 14-of-22 shooting and 10 rebounds as the Spurs shot 51 percent from the floor. Veteran center Pau Gasol added 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds off the bench and is 12-of-20 from the floor during the three-game winning streak.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Warriors SF Omri Casspi (ankle) sat out Saturday and is day-to-day.

2. Spurs SG Danny Green is 3-of-18 from 3-point range over the last two games.

3. Golden State took each of the first three meetings, including a 112-92 win at San Antonio on Nov. 2.

PREDICTION: Spurs 111, Warriors 105

Detroit Pistons vs. Sacramento Kings Preview and Predictions 03-19-2018

18th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Detroit Pistons played their way out of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference in large part due to their inability to win on the road. The Pistons will try to snap a 12-game road slide when they continue a six-game trip by visiting the Sacramento Kings on Monday.

Detroit fell to 9-25 away from home with a 100-87 loss at Portland on Saturday, dropping it to 0-3 on the current trip, though coach Stan Van Gundy was quick to assign blame to the referees. "I've been here four years," Van Gundy told reporters. "I've been many more years before that (elsewhere). I've never come in after a game -- never. Might have talked about one call. Never come in after a game and talked like this. That was embarrassing. We got absolutely screwed tonight." The Kings are not in a playoff race but are not laying down with wins in two of their last three games and four straight solid performances against playoff-bound opponents. Sacramento knocked off Miami and Golden State before falling at Utah 103-97 on Saturday and might have its own gripe with the officials after being out-shot at the free-throw line 38-14 in the loss.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, NBCS California (Sacramento)

ABOUT THE PISTONS (30-39): Detroit dropped out of the race with losses in 13 of its last 16 games but still feels like it's putting in the right effort. "I thought we played really hard tonight," small forward Stanley Johnson told the team's website after Saturday's loss. "I thought we brought our stuff to the game. We played hard. Play hard, play together, play smart. That simple. You do that, it's going to make it tough for anybody to play well against you." Johnson was one of five players to score in double figures in the loss, managing 11 points after totaling eight in the first two games of the trip.

ABOUT THE KINGS (23-48): Sacramento ran out of gas in the fourth quarter on Saturday while playing the second night of a back-to-back on the road but got another solid performance off the bench from guard Buddy Hield. The second-year Oklahoma product is averaging 23 points on 56.8 percent shooting over the last three games and totaled 16 assists in that span. Hield and swingman Garrett Temple (11 points) both scored in double figures at Utah as the reserves outscored the starters 56-41.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Pistons C Andre Drummond grabbed at least 17 rebounds in four of the last five games.

2. Kings SG Bogdan Bogdanovic is 13-of-41 from the floor over the last three games.

3. Drummond collected 16 points and 19 rebounds in Detroit's 108-99 home win over Sacramento on Nov. 4.

PREDICTION: Kings 101, Pistons 95
