Brooklyn Nets vs. Philadelphia 76ers Preview and Predictions 03-16-2018

16th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Philadelphia 76ers are streaking toward the playoffs as they enter Friday's home contest against the Brooklyn Nets. Philadelphia recorded its 12th win in the past 17 contests with Thursday's 118-110 comeback victory over the New York Knicks and now begins a stretch in which six of seven games are at home.

The 76ers, who are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, took another step toward making the postseason for the first time since 2012 when they outscored New York 35-19 in the fourth quarter. Center Joel Embiid recorded 29 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double and 35th of the season. The Nets have lost 18 of their past 21 games after suffering a 116-102 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday but coach Kenny Atkinson is attempting to keep a competitive vibe down the stretch. "We're trying to build something here," Atkinson told reporters. "Us finishing the season in an upward take, upward kind of move, it's important to us. So we're kind of playing our own playoffs. Every game for us is huge for our development."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), NBCS Philadelphia

ABOUT THE NETS (21-47): Point guard D'Angelo Russell has put together back-to-back stellar games by averaging 29 points and going 11-of-20 from 3-point range during the stretch. Russell made seven 3-pointers in the first quarter against Toronto - two shy of the NBA record for most in a single quarter (nine by Golden State's Klay Thompson) - while scoring 32 points for his third 30-point effort of the campaign. "My teammates got me open," Russell said afterward. "In transition, they found me. Maybe they made the extra pass to me. I give a lot of credit to them."

ABOUT THE 76ERS (37-30): Standout guard Ben Simmons had 13 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds against the Knicks for his eighth triple-double of the season, and the second-most by a rookie in NBA history behind legendary Oscar Robertson (26). Simmons also joined Robertson and Magic Johnson as the only rookies in NBA history with at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists but he wasn't too interested in comparisons after the contest. "I try not to get carried away with what people say," Simmons told reporters after the contest. "People want me to be a scorer or a player that I'm not right now. I can score the ball but I can also rebound and pass the ball and I'd rather do that and do what I'm really good at than force things."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The teams split two meetings in Brooklyn earlier this season.

2. Philadelphia F Dario Saric recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds against the Knicks and is averaging 20.2 points over the past six games.

3. Brooklyn PG Spencer Dinwiddie is just 7-of-25 shooting over the past two games.

PREDICTION: 76ers 109, Nets 102

Boston Celtics vs. Orlando Magic Preview and Predictions 03-16-2018

15th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Boston Celtics are falling off the pace in the race for the top seed in the Eastern Conference and are coming off a pair of tough losses to fellow East playoff contenders. The Celtics will try to get back in the win column when they begin a stretch of eight of 10 on the road by visiting the lowly Orlando Magic on Friday.

Boston dropped a 99-97 decision to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday and went to double overtime against Washington at home on Wednesday before falling 125-124. The Celtics, who are comfortably ahead of the third-place Pacers in the standings, are more concerned with getting healthy in the last month before the start of the postseason and were missing Kyrie Irving (knee), Al Horford (illness), Jaylen Brown (concussion) and Marcus Smart (thumb) against the Wizards. The Magic are battling to stay out of the East basement and stayed just ahead of the Atlanta Hawks by snapping a five-game slide with a 126-117 win over Milwaukee on Wednesday. "What we do right now is very important on the basketball court," Orlando coach Frank Vogel told reporters. "It's a time of growth. We're giving some of our younger guys bigger-than-usual opportunities for them to grow, but it's also an important time for our veterans to grow within our system as well and develop habits. There's going to be carry over into next year and everything we do right now is building toward that."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Boston, FS Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE CELTICS (46-22): Missing two All-Stars among five rotation players on Wednesday gave some other players a chance to shine, and power forward Marcus Morris stood out with 31 points and nine rebounds. Morris was one of three players along with forward Jayson Tatum and point guard Terry Rozier to log at least 44 minutes in the setback. Veteran center Greg Monroe chipped in 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting off the bench and is shooting 70.6 percent from the floor in five games this month.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (21-48): Vogel implored his players to keep fighting and finish the season the right way after Orlando was embarrassed in a 108-72 loss at the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, a message the team took to heart. "Once we stepped on that court, we all played with pride and showed how much we wanted to win," veteran guard D.J. Augustin told the team's website. "All of the guys on our team want to win, want to do the right thing and have pride, so we bounced back. (Tuesday) was a rough game for us and it happens to everybody now and then. We just got ready for tonight and it showed." Augustin poured in 32 points in the win while Jonathon Simmons buried seven 3-pointers en route to a team-high 35 points.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Magic PF Aaron Gordon (concussion) missed the last four games and is questionable for Friday.

2. Horford is the only one of the Celtics' injured players expected back on Friday.

3. Boston took two of the first three meetings, including a 104-88 triumph at Orlando on Nov. 5.

PREDICTION: Celtics 113, Magic 106

Dallas Mavericks vs. Toronto Raptors Preview and Predictions 03-16-2018

15th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Toronto Raptors aim to match the franchise record of 11 consecutive victories when they host the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. Toronto's streak became the second best in team history on Thursday when it posted a 106-99 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

The red-hot Raptors broke the franchise mark for consecutive 100-point games by posting its 21st in a row while increasing its Eastern Conference lead to five games over the second-place Boston Celtics. "We know what's in front of us," Toronto coach Dwane Casey told reporters after Thursday's victory. "We understand that and we just got to make sure we are focused and professional." Dallas has endured a porous season but displayed some life lately by splitting its last eight games, and played well in Tuesday's 110-97 road victory over the New York Knicks. "We keep playing hard," veteran power forward Dirk Nowitzki told reporters. "There's obviously some teams that's going for some losses now, and we're one of the teams that still want to win and see where we end up in the draft."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Dallas), TSN4 (Toronto)

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (22-46): Small forward Harrison Barnes poured in 30 points during the victory over the Knicks for his third outing of 30 or more this season. "Harrison was great from start to finish," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said afterward. "He had a good rhythm. We were going to him, teammates were finding him. He did a little bit of everything. I love the way he attacked and got to the free-throw line, made 3s, really great all around offensive game. He was real solid defensively as well." The 25-year-old Barnes has tallied 25 or more points in four of the past seven games and is averaging 22 points during the stretch.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (51-17): Toronto has an average margin of victory of 12.2 points during the winning streak, including five double-digit victories. All-Star shooting guard DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points in the win over the Pacers, bouncing back from back-to-back poor games, and he was pleased with the way his squad recovered from an eight-point halftime deficit. "When things aren't going our way, we don't let the adversity get to us," DeRozan told reporters. "Once we got the lead, we understand when to push the ball, how to push the ball, get stops, get the momentum. We understand the small things that occur in a game and we try to use that to our advantage."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Raptors have won seven of the past 10 meetings but the Mavericks prevailed in the most-recent matchup, 98-93 on Dec. 26 behind 20 points from G J.J. Barea.

2. Toronto C Jonas Valanciunas had 16 points and 17 rebounds against the Pacers and has scored in double digits in a season-best nine straight games.

3. Dallas rookie PG Dennis Smith Jr. is just 8-of-31 shooting from the field over the past two games.

PREDICTION: Raptors 112, Mavericks 95

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder Preview and Predictions 03-16-2018

16th March 2018 by Gracenote
The status of Oklahoma City All-Star small forward Paul George will be firmed up at the mid-day shootaround leading up to Friday's game against the visiting Los Angeles Clippers. George injured a groin muscle during Tuesday's contest against the Atlanta Hawks and was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.

Center Steven Adams (hip) also participated in part of the practice after missing the game against the Hawks and his availability will also be determined on Friday. "They did shooting, did some work," Thunder coach Billy Donovan told reporters after Thursday's workout. "Things that we were walking through, they were on the court. But the things that were contact, those guys were not out there for that." The Clippers are 5-2 in March but suffered a 101-96 setback to the Houston Rockets on Thursday and are in ninth place in the Western Conference. Los Angeles stands one game behind the two teams (San Antonio and Utah) sharing the final two playoff positions and just 1 1/2 games behind sixth-place New Orleans.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBATV, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FS Oklahoma

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (37-30): Forward Tobias Harris continues to thrive since being acquired as part of the package in which Blake Griffin went to the Detroit Pistons. Harris scored 29 points and collected eight rebounds in the loss to Houston and has topped 20 points in five of the last six games and nine of the past 12. Shooting guard Lou Williams had just 14 points on 6-of-18 shooting against the Rockets after topping 20 in five of six games to open the month of March.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (41-29): All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook became the fourth player in NBA history to reach 100 career triple-doubles when he had 32 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in the win over the Hawks. The other members of the star-studded group are Oscar Robertson (181), Magic Johnson (138) and Jason Kidd (107). "Oh man, just an unbelievable blessing," Westbrook said afterward. "I give thanks to the man above just for allowing me to go out and play the game I love each and every night. I never take it for granted. The group of guys that's ahead are Hall of Famers. I'm just happy to be a part of the crew with those guys."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. George averaged 36.5 points as the Thunder won this season's first two meetings with the Clippers.

2. Oklahoma City PF Carmelo Anthony has scored 21 points in back-to-back games after averaging 6.5 on 5-of-18 shooting over the previous two games.

3. Los Angeles G Austin Rivers scored 20 points against the Rockets for his 10th 20-point effort of the season.

PREDICTION: Thunder 111, Clippers 105

Miami Heat vs. Los Angeles Lakers Preview and Predictions 03-16-2018

15th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Miami Heat will very likely finish in the top eight of the Eastern Conference and advance to the postseason, but performances like Wednesday's won't get them much higher than the seventh or eighth spot. The Heat will try to avoid dropping back-to-back road games to lottery-bound opponents when they visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday.

Miami dropped the first two stops of the three-game trip and lost nine in a row overall on the road, capped by Wednesday's 123-119 overtime loss at Sacramento in which it came from 16 down to take a lead in the final minute of regulation before falling apart. "We need to start playing sooner," Heat All-Star guard Goran Dragic told reporters. "We cannot just turn the switch on and try to come back when we're down 16 or 12. Then (our) game needs to be perfect. Every possession needs to go your way. Tonight, we were not right. We allowed them to score close to 60 points in the first half. That's too much." The Lakers are winners of eight of their last 11 games and should be happy to return home after dropping a 117-106 decision at Golden State on Wednesday. Los Angeles won 12 of its last 13 at home, including wins over Cleveland and Denver this week.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, FS Sun (Miami), Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE HEAT (36-33): Miami allowed an average of 119 points in dropping the first two games of the road trip, and coach Erik Spoelstra was honest in his assessment of the team's defense. "We just weren't able to defend it the way we're capable of," Spoelstra told reporters. "A lot of middle drives. A lot of attack on pick and rolls. They also hit a lot of floaters in the paint. Those are not easy shots, not only for their bigs, but their guards. And then in the fourth quarter, we started to shut that down, as well. So, it just required a much great commitment throughout the course of the game." The Heat were missing defensive anchor Hassan Whiteside (hip) and did not have the offensive firepower to make up for his absence with Dwyane Wade (hamstring) and Josh Richardson (foot) also missing.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (31-37): The Warriors were missing All-Stars Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green on Wednesday, and Los Angeles' inability to get around the injury-riddled group led to some frustration. Center Brook Lopez had to step in between a heated exchange in a huddle between power forward Julius Randle and guard Isaiah Thomas. "We expect a lot out of each other," Randle told reporters. "...It's just communicating. We want to win. We expect to win these games and we expect each other to play at a certain level, so it's just us being teammates, nothing personal."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Heat rookie C Bam Adebayo is 3-of-19 from the floor over the last two games.

2. Lakers rookie PF Kyle Kuzma (ankle) sat out Wednesday's game and is day-to-day.

3. Los Angeles breezed to a 131-113 win at Miami on March 1 as Thomas and Randle combined for 54 points.

PREDICTION: Heat 109, Lakers 107

Sacramento Kings vs. Golden State Warriors Preview and Predictions 03-16-2018

15th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Golden State Warriors were missing three of their four All-Stars on Wednesday but were not about to use that as an excuse to lay down and take a third straight loss. Kevin Durant managed to lead the Warriors past the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday and will try to do the same when they host the lowly Sacramento Kings on Friday.

Golden State was missing Stephen Curry (ankle), Klay Thompson (thumb) and Draymond Green (shoulder) but got 26 points from Durant to lead seven scorers in double figures in the 117-106 triumph. Curry will miss at least the next week and Thompson will sit out at least two weeks before being re-evaluated while Green is day-to-day with shoulder soreness. Health is a bigger concern at the moment for the Warriors than the standings, where they will enter play on Thursday 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Houston Rockets, but 10 1/2 games clear of third-place Portland. That all counts as good news for the Kings, who are heading out for two on the road after making a one-game stop at home on Wednesday and earning a 123-119 overtime victory over the Miami Heat.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Sacramento), NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE KINGS (22-47): Sacramento lost to a pair of West playoff contenders on the road at Denver and Oklahoma City on Sunday and Monday but got a few of its young players on the same page in Wednesday's triumph. The rookie starting backcourt of De'Aaron Fox and Bogdan Bogdanovic combined to score 34 points on 14-of-28 shooting while second-year shooting guard Buddy Hield added 24 points in 31 minutes off the bench. Hield is trying to find some consistency after posting scoring totals of 20, zero, 18, three and 24 over the last five contests.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (52-16): Curry has a history of ankle issues and already missed time this season due to problems with both ankles, so Golden State is being very cautious with his rehab. "We're trying to build up his strength as best we can around the [tweaked right] ankle, and the training staff felt that an extra week or 10 days of intense rehabilitation would put him in a much better position to play through the rest of the year with less risk of spraining the ankle again," Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters. Quinn Cook started in Curry's place on Wednesday and managed 13 points in 28 minutes.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Kings PF Skal Labissiere (hip) sat out the last three games and is day-to-day.

2. Warriors SF Omri Casspi went 7-of-8 from the floor en route to 15 points in 20 minutes off the bench on Wednesday.

3. Sacramento earned a 110-106 win at Golden State on Nov. 27 in a game that both Curry and Durant sat out.

PREDICTION: Warriors 110, Kings 98
