Friday’s college basketball
SEC tournament, St Louis
Florida beat Arkansas 88-73 at home Jan 17, going 13-25 on arc; Gators won last eight series games, beating Hogs 68-61 in this event two years ago. Since ’03, Florida is 4-0 vs Arkansas in SEC tourney. Florida won its last three games overall, by 6-21-13 points; they’re just 2-3 in last three SEC tourneys. Arkansas held off South Carolina by 5 last nite, outscoring Gamecocks 23-10 on foul line; senior G Beard was only Hog to play more than 30:00. Last four times Arkansas won their first SEC tournament game, they also won their second game.

Conference USA tournament, Frisco, TX
Western Kentucky beat Old Dominion twice this season, winning by 7-22 points; before this season, Hilltoppers had lost six games in row to ODU. WKU is 16-4 in its last 20 games after routing UAB last nite, avenging an earlier loss to the Blazers- despite the lopsided 98-70 final, Hilltoppers played four guys 33:00+, with Thompson playing all 40:00. Monarchs won nine of their last ten games after outlasting La Tech 62-58 last nite in low-possession (60) game where ODU played three starters 33:00+.

Big East tournament, NYC
Providence won three of last four games after its OT win over Creighton yesterday, when four starters played 40:00+. Friars split pair with Xavier this year, beating Musketeers by 9 at home, losing by 10 in Cintas Center 10 days ago- they’re 6-9 vs top 50 teams this season. Xavier is 6-4 vs Providence in Big East games; this is first time they’ve met in this event. Xavier pulled away from St John’s Thursday, winning 88-60, but it was 33-29 at half; only two Xavier guys played more than 29:00. Musketeers won 13 of their last 14 games overall.

Butler lost five of its last eight games, coming from behind (down 8 at half) to beat Seton Hall in dramatic fashion last nite, after Pirates has beaten them twice during season. Bulldogs scored winning hoop with 0:03.6 left to play. Butler beat Villanova 101-93 at home this year (they were 15-22 on arc), then lost rematch by 11 in Philly (they were 12-29 on arc and led by 13 early). Wildcats are 7-3 in Big East play vs Butler; Bulldogs won three of last four meetings. Villanova made 15-29 on arc last nite; one Wildcat played more than 29:00 in easy win over Marquette.

North Carolina/Duke split two meetings this year; Duke outscored UNC 49-29 in 2nd half of Saturday’s 74-64 home win over the Heels, after UNC led by 10 at half. Duke is 9-4 in last 13 series games; they beat Tar Heels in last two ACC tourney meetings. Jayhawks are 26-5 in last 31 Big X tourney games. Kansas beat K-State twice this year, by 1-14 points; they’ve won last seven games in this lopsided rivalry (30-5 in last 35 meetings). K-State played three guys 41:00+ in OT win over TCU yesterday.

WVU beat Baylor by 13 last nite after struggling to score for first 12:00- they used three starters 33:00+. Tech held on to beat Texas by 4 last nite after leading by 14 early- only Tech kids played more than 28:00. Last night was Tech’s first Big X tourney win in five years.

Mountain West tournament, Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas
Nevada won seven of its last eight games; they split pair with San Diego State this year, beating Aztecs 83-58 at home Feb 10 (game was tied at half), lost by 5 in Viejas Center six nites ago. San Diego St is 9-2 in MW games vs Nevada; 2-2 the last two years. Nevada made 12-25 on arc in a tough win over UNLV Thursday- Wolf Pack was down 12 in 2nd half- they played four starters 31:00+. Aztecs won last seven games, are peaking at right time; they spanked Fresno by 12 last nite, avenging pair of regular season losses to FSU. Three Aztecs played 31:00+ last nite.

Pac-12 tournament, T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas
UCLA won 82-74 at Arizona Feb 8, in teams only meeting this season; Bruins made 11-24 on arc in a game they led by 10 at half. Over last six years, Arizona is 3-2 vs UCLA in Pac-12 tourney; teams split their last 14 meetings overall. Wildcats won six of their last seven games; they whipped Colorado by 16 yesterday, going 26-38 on foul line- three Arizona kids played 34:00+. Cal-Fullerton beat Cal-Davis twice this season, by 15 at home, by 2 in rematch; head coaches had words after first meeting (Fullerton coach Taylor is Davis alum). Teams split last ten meetings; Davis ousted Fullerton from this event in OT LY. Titans edged Long Beach by hoop yesterday, despite giving up 16 offensive boards and going just 2-8 on arc- their best three guys all played 35:00+. Aggies won their last six games; they struggled with lowly Riverside yesterday, winning by 4 while playing three guys 35:00+. Davis won this tournament for first time last season.

Irvine won nine of their last 11 games overall; they’re 10-4 in last 14 Big West tourney games; Anteaters split pair with Santa Barbara this season, losing by 12 in Thunderdome in January, winning rematch by 20 at home 15 days ago. Irvine won five of last seven series games; they survived Hawai’i by point last nite (68-67), rallying from down 10 with 4:08 left. Four Anteaters played 30:00+. Gauchos crushed a dismal Cal Poly team last nite; UCSB split its last six games overall- they are 9-6 this season vs teams ranked in top 200.
