Wednesday’s NBA Picks, Betting Odds and Analysis
Covers.com

It was a bad night for Gordon Hayward and for Covers NBA editorial picks in the first edition of this season’s Pick ‘n’ Roll. Shooters gotta shoot and we’ve got a shorter memory than Nick Young when it comes to our last miss.

Brooklyn Nets at Indiana Pacers (-3.5, 215)

The Nets traded for D’Angelo Russell in the offseason in the hopes of letting the young, combo guard run their offense, and not worry about the growing pains that come with it. Brooklyn head coach Kenny Atkinson built his reputation as a developer of young players when he was an assistant coach in Atlanta. The Nets are hoping he can unlock the potential Russell displayed in flashes during his first two seasons in the league with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Russell will share the starting backcourt duties with Jeremy Lin, who missed 46 games last season with a nagging hamstring injury. Lin takes a lot of heat on Twitter for his… let’s say… interesting hair decisions but his contribution to the Nets’ success on the court can’t be questioned. Brooklyn went 24-11-1 against the spread in games Lin played and 17-27-2 ATS in games he missed a year ago.

Pick: Nets +3.5

New Orleans Pelicans at Memphis Grizzlies (-2.5, 206)

Pelicans supporters have to be wondering if there is a voodoo curse on their basketball team. New Orleans started last season with three starters injured before Game 1 and were forced to find street free agents to fill out their rotation for the first half of the campaign.

It’s a new year but the same story for the Pelicans. New Orleans will be without point guard Rajon Rondo until the end of November, combo forward Soloman Hill until February and rookie point guard Frank Jackson until January.

Maybe the team should hire its own training staff instead of sharing the one belonging to the New Orleans Saints? Just a thought.

The Pelicans started last year off 0-8 SU (2-6 ATS) and 1-10 SU (2-9 ATS) the year prior. Slow starts are a pattern for this team.

Pick: Grizzlies -2.5

Yesterday's picks: 0-2

Season record: 0-2

Totals Streaks

*The Over is 10-2 in the Hornets’ last 12 games overall.
*The Over is 6-1 in the Suns’ last seven games overall.

Injury To Note

It’s only the second day of new season but there are a number of injuries knocking out key players. The Celtics will be without All-Star wing Gordon Hayward indefinitely following his gruesome injury at Cleveland last night. Boston opened as a 7.5-point home favorite versus the Milwaukee Bucks but the line got lowered to C’s -3 after Hayward’s injury.

The Spurs will be without their best player and MVP favorite Kawhi Leonard tonight against the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves. The Spurs opened as 4-point chalk but the line is now down to Wolves +1.5.

Top Trends

*The Sixers are 8-2 SU and 10-0 ATS in the last 10 games Joel Embiid has played.
*The Magic went 29-11-1 ATS in the final 41 games of the regular season last year. The Magic also went 3-1 SU and ATS against the Heat last year.

Covers Consensus

Covers bettors like the Spurs to cover the spread tonight against the visiting T-Wolves. More than 65 percent of consensus players picked the Spurs to cover as 2 and/or 1.5-point favorites.
