WNBA Betting Pick
By Allen Moody
Bangthebook.com

Just one game on the WNBA schedule today, but it’s an interesting one from a handicapping perspective, as the Los Angeles Storm visits the New York Liberty for an afternoon contest. The Sparks are favored by 2 and the total is 158, while my numbers make this one 81-79 in favor of Los Angeles.

Obviously this is a huge letdown game for Los Angeles, which defeated Minnesota 70-64 on Friday night and is the third game of a five-game road trip. The Sparks are obviously the better team, but how much did that win take out of them? The Minnesota game was more of a statement game than anything, as the Sparks have little chance to catch Minnesota in the standings. After defeating the Lynx last year to win the WNBA title, Los Angeles was defeated by Minnesota 88-77 on July 6, which was the first time the teams met this season. They also have a game in Los Angeles on Aug. 27.

The Sparks haven’t been anything special on the road this season and are 7-6 straight-up and against the spread. They have won four of their last five games, including an 87-74 home win over the Liberty on Aug. 4. The game was tied at the half before the Sparks took over in the second half and the Sparks also won the first meeting of the year between the two teams 90-75 in New York.
From a situational perspective, there isn’t a whole lot in this game. Teams who won their last game as a 5-point or more road underdog and are now road favorites are 8-12 since 2011, while teams who defeated Minnesota their last game have pretty much been a 50-50 proposition the past few years. The Sparks haven’t performed well off a win as an underdog, going 2-6 the past two-and-a-half seasons.

The Liberty can be a hard team to figure out at times. They do have a habit of playing close games, which can be a good thing or not depending on the opponent. They lost to Minnesota by 1 point on July 25 and then turned around and defeated a hapless Indiana team by a single point their next game, failing to cover the spread.

The last time Los Angeles played after a game with the Lynx they were defeated at Seattle as road favorites and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the same thing happen here, so will grab New York as home underdogs.
