MLB | KANSAS CITY @ MINNESOTA | 08/17 | 1:10 PM EDT
KANSAS CITY +1.5
ANALYSIS: Matinee series finale on Wednesday, and my model has the Royals covering the runline (-140) in 67 percent of simulations behind lefty pitcher Daniel Lynch, who has allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of his past seven starts and has a 3.86 ERA in 14 innings this year vs. the Twins. Minnesota is 2-5 in its past seven Wednesday games.

MLB | CHI. CUBS @ WASHINGTON | 08/17 | 1:05 PM EDT
CHI. CUBS -145
ANALYSIS: The Nats are on a 3-10 skid after Tuesday's extra-inning loss. Wednesday's starter, Cory Abbott, has been terrible in his last two starts, allowing eight walks, four homers and 10 earned runs over 7.2 innings. Cubs lefty Drew Smyly has a 2.20 ERA in day games this season and a 2.63 career ERA in five appearances at Nationals Park. He'll face a Nats lineup that ranks seventh-worst in OPS against southpaws. And for most of the season, Washington had Juan Soto and Josh Bell; now they're Padres. Cubs left fielder Ian Happ (12 HR, 54 RBI, .812 OPS) should be back in the lineup after getting the day off Tuesday.

Matt Severance

MLB | SAN DIEGO @ MIAMI | 08/17 | 4:10 PM EDT
SAN DIEGO -160
ANALYSIS: Jesus Aguilar, Miguel Rojas and Garrett Cooper are all on the bench for the Marlins, who try for the unlikely sweep. Starting pitcher Pablo Lopez is 0-3 with a 5.35 ERA in seven day starts. Through his first 10 starts overall, Lopez had a 1.83 ERA. In his 13 starts since, it’s 4.99. San Diego's Mike Clevinger has allowed two ER or fewer in four his past five. That putrid Miami lineup should not score more than two runs off Clevinger; it's all whether the San Diego offense wakes up.

MLB | BALTIMORE @ TORONTO | 08/17 | 3:07 PM EDT
TORONTO -170
ANALYSIS: Is the smart bet here the Baltimore runline? Maybe, but I just can't see the Jays being swept at home and a potential rout here -- I expect a sense of urgency before the team heads out on a tough road trip at the Yankees and Red Sox. But, boy, has Baltimore had Toronto's number of late. Orioles closer Felix Bautista (1.62 ERA) likely will not be available after pitching in each of the first two games of this series. Starting pitcher Austin Voth (3-1, 5.34) is meh. Stud rookie catcher Adley Rutschman is not playing. Neither is fellow rookie Terrin Vavra. Ross Stripling (5-3, 3.16) comes off the injured list for Toronto and usually is dependable for five strong innings. Jays closer Jordan Romano hasn't gone since Saturday so he should be good for two innings.
