The Chicago White Sox host the Oakland Athletics for the opener of a three-game series Friday afternoon.
Both teams will play on a day of rest but coming off very different results as the White Sox scored eight runs in a blowout win at Detroit on Wednesday while the A's took a 10-1 beating by the Cubs at Wrigley the same day. Oakland is 12-2 in its last 14 games following an off day and I expect the visitors to bounce back in a big way here.
White Sox left-hander Ross Detwiler (1-2, 5.72 ERA) gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 3-plus innings of a 13-2 loss at Oakland on July 13. Over his career, Detwiler has a 9.00 ERA in six outings against the A's who counter with right-hander Mike Fiers (10-3, 3.46 ERA). Fiers has compiled a 2.26 ERA in his past 16 outings and the A's are 9-2 in Fiers' last 11 starts. Additionally, note that Fiers is 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA in seven career starts versus the White Sox.

In an A.L. Central showdown that will go a long way in determining who wins the division, the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians meet for the second of their four-game series. Shane Bieber (11-4 3.31 ERA) of the Indians will start against Devin Smeltzer (1-1 2.28 ERA) of the Twins. Both pitchers have a WHIP lower than 1.00. Bieber has 182 strikeouts on the year and has 16 starts allowing two earned runs or less. Bieber has allowed just four earned runs in his last 25 innings. Smeltzer has only pitched 27.2 innings this season but has been great in all but one of his appearances (allowed one earned run or less in the other four). Two solid pitchers on pitching staffs both in the top eight in ERA, this should be a low-scoring pitchers duel. The total has gone UNDER in five of Cleveland's last six games.

Friday night comp play on the Under in the Washington Nationals-New York Mets contest.
Stephen Strasburg has seen each of his last 4 starts play Over the posted total, and in his last start he was tattooed for 9 hits and 9 runs by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but I want you to forget those facts for tonight.
The stat that I want you to keep in mind for tonight is the fact the Nationals hit Queens having played 3 straight Under the total. They are also Under the total in 6 of their last 9 overall games, and away from D.C., the Under is on a dominant 13-3 run their last 16 on the road.
New York enters having allowed just 10 runs total over their last 5 games, as Marcus Stroman looks to improve on his first start in a Mets uniform in which he allowed 3 runs while pitching only to one out in the 5th inning against the Pirates. Stroman may have wished he were traded to the other New York team, but right now the Mets are playoff-viable, and I can see him stepping on that slab and matching Strasburg pitch-for-pitch.
I am going to call for this anticipated series opener to land Under the posted price at Citi Field tonight.
