Play on: Reds -125 at 5dimes

Play - Cincinnati Reds w/Roark (Game 906).

Edges - Reds: Roark 5-1 last six overall team-starts in July … Pirates: visiting team is 0-5 all-time in Roark’s team-starts against Pittsburgh … We recommend a 1* play on Cincinnati. Thank you and good luck as always.

MLB | Mariners vs Rangers
Play on: Mariners +118 at 5dimes

One of the better starting pitchers this month is Mike Leake. Yeah, that Mike Leake. He's quietly posted a 2-1 record with a 2.59 ERA in four July starts. One of those victories came against the Rangers six days ago, 5-3. Leake held Texas to three runs in seven innings. Leake has a 22-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his past four outings. Seattle has been below-the-radar, too, winning its last five games. The Mariners have allowed just 10 runs during their five-game win streak. The Rangers have fallen back to Earth losing 11 of their last 14 games. They are 7-17 during their past 24 games and are looking to deal their best pitcher, Mike Minor, realizing that making the postseason is not a realistic goal anymore. Texas is 1-7 the past eight times facing a righty starter. The Rangers also are without their top power hitter with Joey Gallo sidelined. I like Leake in his current form better than Texas starter Ariel Jurado, who is 2-4 with a 5.45 ERA in 10 home starts. The Mariners' bullpen is bolstered by the return of Hunter Strickland. The Rangers, by contrast, have one of the worst bullpens and it's made worse by their closer, Shawn Kelley, being out.
(Editor's note: Stephen Nover is a perfect 2-for-2 the past two days on his baseball plays and has his strongest Interleague totals play of the summer going today in addition to this free play.)

MIKE LUNDIN'S GIANTS @ PHILLIES FREE PICK

The San Francisco Giants have scored plenty of runs during a 19-5 run that has put them in postseason contention despite a slow start to the year. They'll visit the Philadelphia Phillies for the opener of a three-game series Monday night, and I expect to see plenty of fireworks from both sides as the Phillies have been swinging hot bats lately as well.

The Giants hand the ball to Tyler Beede (3-4, 4.85 ERA) who served up career worsts of three homers while allowing four runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings of a loss to the Cubs last time out. Beede has a 5.54 ERA in eight outings (seven starts) on the road this season.

The Phillies counter with left-hander Drew Smyly (1-5, 7.69 ERA). He impressed with six innings of one-run ball in his first start with the team after coming over from Texas, but note his earned run average for the season ... The Giants have hit lefties well lately, and this could turn ugly fast for Smyly.

Over is 6-1 in Giants last 7 road games vs. a left-handed starter. Over is 9-2-1 in Giants last 12 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

Free pick on OVER.

Sure, the Giants have been red hot but I’m not buying them here. The Phillies will send out Smyly who is making his 2nd start in over a month. His first start back was very good only giving up one run in 6 innings. The Phillies are also swinging some hot bats even though they lost two of three to the Braves, they have over 10 hit 4 straight games.

Beede is coming off a rough game for the Giants giving up 10 hits in under 6 innings of work. He has a 3-1 road record but that is very lucky considering he owns an ERA over 5 on the road.

Play on: Giants +119 at 5dimes

My free play is on the SF Giants at 7:05 ET. The San Francisco Giants were 35-47 on the morning of June 30 but have since won 19 of their last 24 games to insert themselves into wild-card discussion in the National League. As the surging 54-52 Giants get set to open a three-game series against the host Philadelphia Phillies, they are just 2 1/2 games back of the second wild card spot. Philadelphia salvaged the finale of its pivotal series against Atlanta with a 9-4 victory on Sunday and at 55-50, resides one game out of that spot. However, unlike the red-hot Giants, the Phillies are 22-28 since May 29. Tyler Beede (3-4, 4.85 ERA) will take the mound tonight for the Giants, while Phillies will counter with Drew Smyly (1-5, 7.69 ERA). The Giants have won EIGHT of Beede's 11 starts (plus-$875) but he will take the mound Tuesday after surrendering a career-high three HRs and 10 hits in his last outing, a 4-1 setback vs the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday. All three of Beede's wins have come away from AT&T Park but his road ERA of 5.54) leaves a lot to be desired. The Phillies made a move Monday to bolster their starting rotation by trading for New York Mets left-hander Jason Vargas. Taking the mound tonight wiil be Drew Smyly, who the Phillies recently acquired from the Rangers. Smyly earned himself a second start after a dazzling debut with Philadelphia on July 21, when he allowed just one run while striking out eight in six innings of a no-decision against Pittsburgh (Phillies won, 2-1). Smyly has yet to face San Francisco in his career. Beede's road ERA is a concern but the Giants are on a roll (see above) plus how can one take Smyly's Philadelphia debut too seriously? It came against the Pirates, who have lost NINE in a row, plus 15 of 17 since the All Star break. Smyly made 13 appearances (nine starts) while with Texas in 2019, going 1-5 with an 8.42 ERA, 1.91 WHIP and .299 BAA. Giants are the bet! Good luck...Larry

1* Free Play on White Sox +144

With the trade deadline swiftly approaching, the Mets (50-55) have a lot on their plate coming into tonight’s matchup with the White Sox (46-57).

After the Mets acquired starter Marcus Stroman, right-hander Noah Syndergaard (7-5, 4.33 ERA) became the subject of even more trade rumors. So, with the potential for this to be his last game in a Mets uniform, Syndergaard gets the start in Chicago (assuming he isn’t traded before the game).

Opposite Syndergaard will be Reynaldo Lopez (5-9, 5.52 ERA). The White Sox right-hander has had a strong second half so far, producing a 1.71 ERA since the All-Star break. In his last outing, Lopez pitched eight innings and gave up just two runs while striking out 10.

Although the Mets come into this contest as the favorites, New York is a meager 22-35 on the road while the White Sox have managed a winning record at home (27-25).

Look for a good game from White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada, who’s been good against the NL this year. In 34 at-bats of interleague play, Moncada is batting .324 with three doubles, a triple, and three home runs.

MLB | Blue Jays vs Royals
Play on: Royals -107 at BMaker

10* FREE MLB PICK (Royals -107)

I'll fire right back with the Royals on Tuesday, even though we lost with them in the series opener on Monday. The Blue Jays won by a final score of 7-3, but it was tied 3-3 going into the 8th inning. I think this is a big bounce back spot for KC and I like today's starter Mike Montgomery. After getting rocked on the road at Cleveland in his first start with the Royals after coming over from the Cubs, Montgomery limited those same Indians to just 1 run on 5 hits in 5 innings at home in his next start. I trust him a heck of a lot more than Toronto's Sean Reid-Foley, who is filling in for the traded Marcus Stroman. He's got a 6.14 ERA in 2 starts at the big league level this year and a 6.26 ERA in 18 appearances (17 starts) at Triple-A Buffalo. Give me the Royals -107!
