The Miami Marlins are having their way with San Francisco and look to finish off a four-game sweep when they host the Giants on Thursday afternoon. The Marlins pushed across runs in the eighth and ninth innings to post a 5-4 victory on Wednesday and aim to match their season-high four-game winning streak with a triumph in the finale.

Giants right fielder Andrew McCutchen was disappointed with the latest setback, which represents San Francisco's eighth loss in its last nine meetings with Miami. "You can't take any team lightly," McCutchen told reporters after going 2-for-5 with a two-run homer. "This is the big leagues and, regardless of their record or how many fans are in the stands, you've got to be ready to go." Justin Bour continued to torment San Francisco pitchers with the game-tying RBI double in the eighth inning while rookie Brian Anderson lifted the winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. Bour went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and is 17-for-45 with four homers and 14 RBIs in 15 career games against the Giants.

TV: 12:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), FS Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Dereck Rodriguez (1-1, 5.25 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Dan Straily (2-2, 4.08)

Rodriguez is the son of Hall-of-Fame catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, who was National League Championship Series MVP for the Marlins in 2003 as the team went on to win the World Series. The 26-year-old is making his fourth major-league appearance and third start, although his last outing went poorly as he was pounded for five runs and six hits over 2 2/3 innings in a loss to Washington. Rodriguez pitched well in his previous turn, when he gave up one run and five hits over six frames in defeating Philadelphia for his first career win.

Straily always has performed well against the Giants as he is 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA in five career starts while dominating Hunter Pence (0-for-11). The 29-year-old gave up four runs and nine hits over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision against San Diego in his last turn. Straily suffered bruised ribs against the Padres when he was struck by Eric Hosmer's liner but said he only experienced "a little bit of soreness" and is fully healthy for this outing.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants C Buster Posey, who is 2-for-11 lifetime versus Straily, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored on Wednesday and is 5-for-12 in the series.

2. Miami C J.T. Realmuto went 2-for-4 and scored twice on Wednesday and is 6-for-12 with a homer in the series.

3. San Francisco 1B Brandon Belt (appendix) took indoor batting practice Wednesday and eventually will go on a rehab assignment before making his return.

PREDICTION: Giants 7, Marlins 5

Trevor Story has been enjoying a blistering June, which he's highlighted by recording multiple hits in each of his last five contests. Story aims to push his hitting streak to eight games on Thursday afternoon as the Colorado Rockies visit the Philadelphia Phillies for the rubber match of their three-game series.

Story scored twice in Tuesday's 5-4 setback before belting a pair of RBI doubles the following night as Colorado emphatically snapped a season-worst five-game skid with a 7-2 romp. The 25-year-old has gone 18-for-41 in his last 10 contests to raise his batting average from .237 to .270, but he is just 2-for-8 (one homer) lifetime versus Thursday starter Vince Velasquez. While Story has embraced the early portion of June, the Phillies are singing a vastly different tune with losses in eight of 11 contests this month. Jesmuel Valentin has recorded an RBI for Philadelphia in both games of this series, going 4-for-5 with his first career homer, two doubles and a run scored.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, NBC 10 (Philadelphia)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH German Marquez (4-6, 4.79 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (4-7, 4.95)

Marquez tasted defeat for the first time since May 15 on Friday after surrendering three homers in the third inning and five runs overall in a 9-4 setback against Arizona. The 23-year-old Venezuelan has pitched better on the road, where he owns a 3-2 record and 2.06 ERA in six starts while limiting the opposition to a .202 batting average. Marquez has allowed the current crop of Phillies to go 6-for-14 against him, although he won his lone career start versus Philadelphia on May 23, 2017 after yielding just one run over six innings.

Velasquez posted a 3-2 record and 2.14 ERA during a six-start stretch before surrendering a career-high 10 runs and nine hits - five for extra bases - in Friday's 12-4 shellacking by Milwaukee. The 26-year-old issued two walks in the first inning, setting the table for a three-run homer by Ryan Braun. Carlos Gonzalez has ravaged Velasquez in his career, going 6-for-12 with three extra-base hits (one homer) and five RBIs.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia SS Scott Kingery followed a career high-tying four-RBI performance in the series opener by striking out in all four of his plate appearances on Wednesday.

2. Colorado LF Gerardo Parra has hit safely in eight of his last nine games.

3. Phillies CF Odubel Herrera, who is mired in an 0-for-17 drought, is expected to return to the lineup for the finale after sitting out Wednesday's contest.

PREDICTION: Rockies 4, Phillies 2

The Detroit Tigers began the chore of moving on without Miguel Cabrera with a solid comeback win and look to follow it up when they conclude their three-game series with the visiting Minnesota Twins on Thursday afternoon. Detroit exploded for four eighth-inning runs in Wednesday's 5-2 victory, its first contest since losing Cabrera to a season-ending biceps injury a day earlier.

John Hicks started at first base in Cabrera's absence and went 3-for-4 to improve to 6-for-10 with a walk over his last three games. Niko Goodrum also recorded three hits to match a season high, belting his sixth homer of the campaign in the process. Eduardo Escobar went 2-for-4 with a two-run single for the Twins, giving him nine multi-hit performances while going 22-for-54 over his last 14 contests. Minnesota's Miguel Sano, an All-Star last season, was hitless in four at-bats on Wednesday and is 6-for-37 this month without a homer.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Lance Lynn (4-4, 5.08 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (2-5, 4.40)

Lynn has gone 3-0 over his last four starts, posting a 1.46 ERA during the stretch. The 31-year-old settled for a no-decision against the Los Angeles Angels in his last turn after giving up one run and four hits over six innings. Lynn was victorious on May 22, when he scattered five hits over 6 2/3 scoreless frames, to improve to 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three career starts against Detroit.

Fulmer is 4-0 with a 3.04 ERA in four career starts against the Twins as he notched the win on May 23, when he gave up one run and four hits over 5 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old came away without a decision versus Cleveland last time out despite allowing one run and five hits in seven frames. Fulmer has gone 0-4 with a 4.54 ERA in seven home starts this season to fall to 9-10 with a 3.59 ERA in 30 career outings at Comerica Park.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers C James McCann (flu) has missed three straight games and is uncertain for the series finale.

2. Minnesota 1B Joe Mauer (concussion/neck) could return from his injury rehab assignment as soon as Friday.

3. Cabrera is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery on Thursday and will do his rehab in Detroit so he can remain around the team.

The Chicago White Sox attempt to win a four-game series against American League Central-leading Cleveland when they host the Indians on Thursday afternoon for the series finale. Chicago has won the last two contests after losing the series opener and is looking for its fourth victory in five games.

The White Sox posted a 3-2 triumph on Wednesday despite registering only four hits while Cleveland's frustrated offense racked up 14. However, the Indians were just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, while two of Chicago's hits drove in runs - a triple by Charlie Tilson and a single by Kevan Smith. Michael Brantley collected three hits on Wednesday to raise his batting average to .322 after being just 9-for-44 over his previous 11 games. The White Sox are 12-20 at home, having won nine of their last 14 after they opened the season by losing 15 of their first 18 at Guaranteed Rate Field.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Mike Clevinger (4-2, 3.31 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (0-1, 3.60)

Clevinger settled for a no-decision against Detroit in his last turn after giving up two runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old has recorded just one victory over his last five turns, a triumph over the White Sox on May 29 in which he allowed one run and four hits over 6 2/3 frames. Clevinger is 1-2 with a 4.29 ERA in five career appearances (three starts) versus Chicago.

Rodon is making his second start of the season after missing the first two-plus months due to shoulder surgery. The 25-year-old worked five innings against Boston in his season debut on Saturday, when he gave up four runs - two earned - and six hits while suffering the loss. Rodon is 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 10 career appearances (nine starts) against Cleveland and has shut down Brantley (2-for-14).

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox RF Daniel Palka is 0-for-9 with seven strikeouts in the series.

2. Cleveland LHP Andrew Miller (knee) threw his third bullpen session in six days and will face live batters in his next workout.

3. Chicago placed Nate Jones (forearm) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled fellow RHP Juan Minaya from Triple-A Charlotte.

Jun 14, 2018

The Oakland Athletics hope to cool off the visiting Houston Astros and salvage the finale of their three-game series Thursday afternoon, but they'll need to slow down Evan Gattis in order to have a chance. Gattis has recorded three home runs and 10 RBIs in the first two games of the set after going deep twice in Wednesday's 13-5 victory.

The 31-year-old designated hitter belted a three-run shot during Houston's seven-run second inning and added a solo blast in the seventh as the reigning World Series champion extended its winning streak to a season-high seven games. Gattis enters the series finale as the only player in club history to record back-to-back five-RBI performances. Oakland fell to 3-3 on its 10-game homestand as it suffered its seventh straight loss to the Astros despite a two-home run effort from Khris Davis and a three-run blast by Stephen Piscotty. Davis' 18th career multi-homer performance - and third this season - gave him six shots in his last eight contests.

TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, MLB Network, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Justin Verlander (8-2, 1.45 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Frankie Montas (3-0, 1.25)

Verlander produced an atypical performance Friday but managed to win his fourth consecutive decision after allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over six innings at Texas. The 35-year-old native of Virginia, who will be making his 400th career start, is 6-1 with a sterling 0.96 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in seven turns on the road this season. Verlander has made 17 starts against Oakland, going 10-6 with one complete game and a 2.61 ERA.

Montas continued the superb start to his tenure with Oakland this year Friday, when he gave up two runs and six hits over 7 2/3 innings in a win over Kansas City. The 25-year-old Dominican has yielded three runs and 16 hits while registering 14 strikeouts and issuing only three walks over 21 2/3 frames in his three turns. Montas has made two relief appearances against Houston in his career, surrendering five runs and five hits in two innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Gattis has collected 53 RBIs in 50 career games versus the Athletics, including 27 in 25 at Oakland Coliseum.

2. Oakland has been outscored 62-17 during its losing streak against the Astros.

3. Houston is 6-0 on a 10-game road trip that concludes with a three-game set in Kansas City over the weekend.

The Tampa Bay Rays face quite the litmus test as they embark on a 16-game stretch in which they play only the New York Yankees, Houston and Washington. The Rays (32-35), who own a lackluster 11-26 mark against winning teams this season, open that imposing stretch on the road Thursday with the first of four games versus the New York Yankees (43-20).

"We're going to really see what kind of team we have here against the best in the league," said Thursday starter Blake Snell, who owns a 3-0 mark with a rail-thin 0.38 ERA in his past four outings. Tampa Bay countered a disastrous 1-9 stretch by completing a three-game sweep of Toronto with Wednesday afternoon's 1-0 triumph, courtesy of Matt Duffy's RBI single in the ninth inning. New York has answered a 9-1 stretch by dropping two of three, including a 5-4 decision on Wednesday in the finale of an abbreviated two-game interleague series versus the Nationals. Giancarlo Stanton and Greg Bird showed signs of working their way out of their respective pronounced slumps, with the former collecting three hits while the latter belted a towering homer in the loss.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FS1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Blake Snell (8-3, 2.30 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Domingo German (0-4, 5.32)

Snell matched a career high by winning his fourth consecutive decision on Saturday after allowing two runs (one earned) on a season-high seven hits in six innings of a 7-3 victory versus Seattle. The 25-year-old struck out two in that contest after fanning his first seven batters to begin his previous start en route to a 12-strikeout performance. Gary Sanchez is 4-for-10 with three homers against Snell, although the left-hander has flustered Aaron Judge (0-for-6) and Aaron Hicks (0-for-6).

German overcame two homers to strike out nine over six innings in a no-decision against the New York Mets on Saturday. The 25-year-old Dominican didn't walk a batter for the first time since a three-inning effort at Boston on April 12. German will be making his 19th appearance (seventh start) on Thursday by facing the Yankees for the first time in his career.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York owns a 15-4 mark against left-handed starters this season.

2. Tampa Bay CF Mallex Smith is 13-for-23 with five runs scored and four RBIs during his seven-game hitting streak.

3. Yankees OF Brett Gardner went 3-for-8 with four runs scored in two games versus the Rays on April 3-4.

PREDICTION: Yankees 5, Rays 2

Preview: Padres at Braves
Gracenote
Jun 14, 2018

Freddie Freeman looks to continue another offensive surge and help the Atlanta Braves increase their lead in the National League East when they host the improving San Diego Padres on Thursday to open a four-game set. Freeman is 13-for-27 during a seven-game hitting streak with five homers, including a solo blast in Wednesday’s 2-0 triumph against the visiting New York Mets.

Freeman also had an RBI single in the last victory and has hit safely in 23 of his last 24 games, going 37-for-96 in that span to raise his NL-leading batting average to .344 with 14 homers and 48 RBIs. Anibal Sanchez tries to remain unbeaten when he takes the mound for the Braves, who lead Washington by one game in the division, against fellow right-hander Tyson Ross in the series opener after the Padres took two of three from Atlanta in San Diego from June 4-6. The Padres continue to hang around in the tight NL West race with four wins in their last five games and an 11-4 mark since May 29 with five straight series victories after a 4-2 triumph at St. Louis on Wednesday. Manuel Margot recorded a triple along with two singles in the victory and is 9-for-20 during a six-game hitting streak for San Diego, which sits 5 ½ games out of first place while sitting in the cellar.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, FS Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Tyson Ross (5-3, 3.43 ERA) vs. Braves RH Anibal Sanchez (2-0, 2.37)

Ross is unbeaten in his last six starts, but has not been able to get through six innings during the past three trips to the mound. The 31-year-old, who has held right-handed batters to a .166 average, posted quality starts in the first three outings of his streak and allowed nine runs (eight earned) over 15 2/3 innings over the last three appearances. Nick Markakis is 5-for-8 with three walks versus Ross, who is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in four career meetings (three starts) with the Braves.

Sanchez earned his second victory of the season Saturday, permitting two runs on three hits and two walks across 5 1/3 innings. The 34-year-old Venezuela native gave up two or fewer runs in four of his five starts in 2018, including June 3 against Washington when he yielded two unearned runs and two hits over seven innings. Eric Hosmer is 15-for-43 with five doubles and a homer against Sanchez, who is 0-2 with a 2.76 ERA in five career starts versus the Padres.

WALK-OFFS

Preview: Mets at Diamondbacks
Gracenote
Jun 13, 2018

The Arizona Diamondbacks were in their worst stretch of the season the last time they saw the New York Mets and the result was a three-game sweep that was part of a seven-game slide. The Diamondbacks are playing markedly better as they prepare for a rematch against the skidding Mets, who arrive in Arizona having lost 10 of 11 entering Thursday's opener of a four-game set.

The Diamondbacks were denied in their bid for a sweep of visiting Pittsburgh, dropping a 5-4 decision to snap their five-game winning streak. Arizona scored six times in last month's series against the Mets but the National League West leaders have piled up 55 runs during the 5-1 stretch. Conversely, the Mets have scored only 10 runs over their past nine games and were shut out for the third time in eight contests in Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Atlanta, prompting third baseman Todd Frazier to apologize to starting pitcher Jacob deGrom. "For us not to put up any runs for him again, I told him I was sorry," Frazier said after New York dropped a season-worst eight games below .500. "I don't know what else to tell him."

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Steven Matz (2-4, 3.53 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Matt Koch (4-3, 4.20)

The Mets wasted another quality start by Matz, who did not factor in the decision last time out against the New York Yankees after giving up three runs and five hits over six innings. He was touched for a pair of homers in the game, the first time he's been taken deep since he allowed a pair of blasts in a no-decision versus Arizona on May 19. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt has two solo homers in five at-bats against Matz.

Koch escaped with a no-decision at Colorado on Saturday despite getting rocked for seven runs (five earned) and eight hits, including three home runs, over five innings. He had his best outing in his previous start, earning the win by limiting Miami to three hits over seven scoreless innings. Koch gave up three runs and failed to retire a batter in relief against the Mets last year, his lone major-league appearance in 2017.

WALK-OFFS

1. Goldschmidt is 20-for-37 during a nine-game hitting streak.

2. Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard will remain sidelined after he was told to rest his injured right index finger.

3. Arizona LHP Robbie Ray (strained right oblique) will make a rehab start Thursday at Class A Visalia.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 5, Mets 2

Preview: Red Sox at Mariners
Gracenote
Jun 13, 2018

David Price has not lost in over a month and looks to keep his hot streak going when the Boston Red Sox continue their 10-game road trip with the first of four at the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night. Price, who is 5-0 over his last six outings, will square off against former American League Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez in the series opener.

Boston opened the trek by completing a three-game sweep of major league-worst Baltimore, outscoring the Orioles 13-5 to improve to 24-11 away from home. J.D. Martinez and Mookie Betts clubbed solo home runs for the surging Red Sox, giving the duo 22 and 18 blasts, respectively. Speaking of the long ball, Seattle got a lot of mileage out of it in a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels to remain atop the AL West. The Mariners went deep 10 times in the series, including four by Ryon Healy and three by Mitch Haniger, who swatted a walk-off two-run shot in Wednesday's 8-6 victory.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (7-4, 4.00 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Félix Hernández (6-5, 5.70)

Price won his third straight outing by limiting the Chicago White Sox to two runs and five hits over six innings on Saturday and has surrendered a combined 12 runs during his six-start unbeaten streak dating to May 12. He has made seven career starts against the Mariners, posting a 3-1 record and 2.62 ERA while holding them to a collective .204 batting average. Nelson Cruz is 9-for-28 with a pair of homers off Price.

Hernandez followed up his longest outing of the year with his shortest, lasting three innings and permitting six runs (five earned) on seven hits in a loss at Tampa Bay. He beat the Rays in his previous turn with eight dominant innings, allowing one run on five hits while matching his season high with seven strikeouts. Hernandez is 8-4 with a 4.01 ERA lifetime versus the Red Sox, but he hasn't beaten them since 2014.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cruz has five homers and seven RBIs in his last five games.

2. Red Sox OF Andrew Benintendi was 5-for-10 with five walks in the series versus Baltimore.

3. Healy was 6-for-11 with the four homers, five RBIs and five runs scored in the three-game series versus the Angels.

PREDICTION: Mariners 5, Red Sox 4
